how to get text to strech to arc...not attach to it

I am trying to get some text to stretch to an arc like in this graphic:

I started out just creating text, create paths out of the text and taking each corner point and pulling it down to the arc about where I thought it should be. I managed to get it close, but then decided I should use a larger arc and had to start all over. Is there any way to tell the text to stretch down easily that would get me close to what I want? I know I will be doing some manual tweaking myself, but thought it would be a good start.
