How to get Audio from a Videocard using HDMI?

The GPU will be handling sound processing with its own onboard SPU if you plug your computer to your TV through HDMI. GPU sound is decent and can handle surround sound. If you have an AMD card you might need to employ this fix to eliminate a problem between the AMD and Realtek sound drivers.

If you want the sound to come from your onboard audio you'll have to plug it directly into external speakers or through an A/V receiver.

How do the PC knows that the audio needs to go to the video card and not the Motherboard output ?

How does the Motherboard send the audio to the Videocard? or the videocard process the audio as well? Should i disable the onboard audio then?

Does all motherboards support this?

The video card processes the audio through the manufacturer's driver package regardless of the motherboard you have.

You do not need to disable the onboard audio if you plan on using it at all. You do need to set the default audio device to your video card in the control panel, though.

The same process applies to NVIDIA cards.

Right click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select playback devices. It should list HDMI (TV) and realtek/mobo audio. Disable the mobo audio or right click the HDMI out and set as default device.
