How should WoW end? How should any MMO end?

There was a really thought provoking article on WOW.com recently:

Breakfast Topic: How should WoW end?

A satisfactory end and a party would be a lot of fun, but I would like to see a darker conclusion to all of our efforts. What if we become so powerful, that we are like titans ourselves? The ensuing battle is one glorious free-for-all resulting in a cataclysmic event ending all life in Azeroth as we know it. Boom! Game over.

The article makes an interesting comparison to possible WoW endings, and the way Tabula Rasa Ended.

The End of Tabula Rasa - Server Shutdown Event

Anyway... something to think about.

How should WoW end? How should MMOs end in general?

i think wow will never die. Some korean company will buy it when blizzard is done with it

thing is, your asking wether a company with an annual revenue of 11 million gamers x 15 dollars a month x 12 months a year, to finish a game that brings in that much cash? (its $1,980,000,000 per year)

The day it ends is when there's only a handful of players left, which by then, there's no use for any in game party or any other events as nobody would be there

Worm holes open all over the world map bringing in protoss, zerg and humans, forcing the races of WoW to pick sides or be extreminated thus ushering in the World Of Starcraft .

/ would love to zerg rush invade storm wind.

That is just crazy enough to work!

You are forgetting things.

Physical software sales, promotions (like the mnt dew promo going on), official tournament fees, Blizzcon ticket sales. The list goes on and on and on.

Only way wow will die is when you stop paying for it.

Year after year i expect to read the news that EQ is getting shut down and that game is still chugging along. If EQ can drag it out this long with the teeny tiny community they have i dont think wow will die in our life time unless blizzard pulls the plug for some stupid reason.

It will take something crazy to kill wow. Think of it this way: even if WoW lost 90% of its customers tomorrow, it would still be larger than the next most popular MMO.

i think it will just die out when the new fad is going to come along.. and you cant really conclude WoW, theres no real story.. just a quest for gold :p

I'm not sure how I would want WoW to end. I've pretty much quit it, but I would hope they end it really well when they do. Something memorable for the people who've played for years.

And BTW, Blizz doesnt make $15/mo on every person, its a LOT cheaper in places like China.

I kind of wish WoW would die so Blizzard could put all that man power into getting SC2 and D3 released faster. I understand they want to release a quality game but they seriously take way to long to get things out.

When an MMO ends they should allow users to host private servers... there won't be any story advancements or new items/enemies/worlds, but at least the game will be playable.

I'd hate to go buy an MMO today for $50 and see it shut down in a year due to financial problems. I just paid $50 plus a year's worth of subscription fees for something that's no longer accessible!!

It won't end. They will eventually release WoW 2, but they won't kill off WoW 1. Just look at everquest. Everquest was released in 1999. The servers are still up. Everquest 2 was released in 2004 same year as WoW.

It will end not with a bang, but with a whimper as the last server is finally turned off and it will be but a footnote on slashdot.

it will be over once you discover that you missed out on the last x many of years of your life that you grinded away...

That is the best idea I've heard in a long time.

Never had anything close to the player base of WoW but is still running to this day. Big MMOs don't usually die, not so long as people are willing to keep forking over money. My guess is that there will be a continual flow of expansions but never a real "sequel" because that would break the continuity of the world.

I think that one thing that gives games a real interest is the fact that there is a story that is being told that will end. It gives real consequence to the game and leaves me wanting more. This is why I havent found an MMO that I like although if TOR goes the way it should I think that is exactally what I need. TR interested me because they had an epic ending. IMO WoW should end with a giant PvP server of horde v alliance.

Its kind of ironic that a new blizzard game will drastically reduce income from WoW, if not kill it.

This is actually kinda what happened at the end of the WoW beta. Blizzard had massive amount of enemies spawn everywhere and rape the entire world until everyone died. It didn't turn into world of starcraft though. :(

I don't think that WoW will ever really "die." I think eventually people will move on (especially considering how blizzard seems pretty hell-bent on destroying the game...but that's another thread altogether) and eventually the servers will get empty. But there will always be some people playing it. I think it will eventually turn into a ghost town, but I highly doubt WoW would ever have a "bam, turn out the lights, unplug the servers, everyone go home" type of ending. If they did ever kill the servers alltogether, it would be long after they had become ghost towns.

Wow will end but at it's end will have the new

World of Warcraft: The new beginning.

WoW will "end" about like EQ has...something else will come along to steal it's thunder, servers will get consolidated and people will just drift away.

I don't think that its a matter of just throwing more money at something to get it out sooner.

They have different teams working on different games, it's not just one giant pool of developers working on all three games at once. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want people from the WoW team to be working on SC2 and D3...trust me.

Flintlocke finds a bigger bomb and manages to blow Azeroth to bits.

I really doubt WoW will go anywhere in the next decade or so. They can just consolidate, downsize, and continue until they just can't make any money at all. As others have pointed out, EQ and UO are still around and still make money.

It will go on as long as people play it. Too bad it it doesnt die now so Blizz can put all their time and money in Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.

Yep. If EQ still has a considerable player base, which is now dwarved by WoW, than WoW too will have a following for years to come...the only difference will be that, WoW probably won't have the billion expansion packs that EQ has (because we all know Blizzard takes forever and a day to release software).

Blizzard has more money than they've ever had thanks to WoW. That's only a good thing for diablo and sc.
