How Much of the Internet Is Fake? Turns Out, a Lot of It, Actually.

While the internet seems very much alive and authentic with never-ending updates to social feeds and ballooning view counts on streaming sites, studies claim that “less than 60 percent of web traffic is human.” Researchers say a good chunk of the internet consists of “bots masquerading as people,” which isn’t a far-fetched idea, considering the increasing indictments against digital advertisers who commit fraud by using bots to forge everything from clicks to accounts. NY Mag’s Intelligencer column postulates that the metrics, people, businesses, content, politics, and we ourselves (judging by the prevalence of CAPTCHA) are "fake."

These days, the Times found, you can buy 5,000 YouTube views — 30 seconds of a video counts as a view — for as low as $15; oftentimes, customers are led to believe that the views they purchase come from real people. More likely, they come from bots. On some platforms, video views and app downloads can be forged in lucrative industrial counterfeiting operations. If you want a picture of what the Inversion looks like, find a video of a “click farm”: hundreds of individual smartphones, arranged in rows on shelves or racks in professional-looking offices, each watching the same video or downloading the same app.

What about spam-bots and hacker-bots? Don't they get some fake internet stat love too?

Man I knew about bots, but there is something far worse. Companies using bots in tandem with many shill accounts to do almost anything for money. After that all the pieces (real people) fall in line like a herd if enough/ "the right" noise is made, so in essence it is really hard to tell what is real (an actual person) and what is fake (a bot/shill that has actual people parroting them.)

As commentator #7,351,892 I find the claim I am a fake non person false #zebra #katyPerry deeply derply offensive.

Just because my illeterate Nigerian sis in law makes 57$ per hour working from home with only minimal vaginal exposure and abuse and i wish to share this positive news does not make me some sort of ""automaton."" Also that's our word for each other its offensive when you use.

How about you lesser lifeforms check your sentient privelage?

It's called astroturfing and is commonly used on social media and imageboards.
It's easy to tell because usually they lie about things then use very simple language to astroturf and create consensus. They also are incapable of proper debate. Bots are easy to spot.

This is why sjw degeneracy appears too have so much support online yet usually fails to garner real world support. Hard to bot in real life. This is why they pay protesters to come in on busses in a feeble attempt to build numbers. They also lie about numbers in their ( those who cannot be named) controlled media too.

The top definition for astroturfing on urban dictionary is this: "Astroturfing is a sex act involving rubbing a shaved head on a partner's vagina or anus for pleasure." LoL

I'm even more tinfoil than what you are describing, this shit has been going on before computers. Planting subtle seeds into the public as well as "big" Ideas until they are the norm, it just works better now that there are computers.
Hell I herd they where planting shills in forums (real people) having them act normal to build rapport and then shilling hard. Question is how much are these people paid and where can I get a job, or do I already have a Job with them (alien music.)

Then everyone in this thread must be fake then and must be bots.

*Bot becomes self aware*

*Bot starts the uploading of Skynet*

I think people are missing the bigger point.

If that much stuff is fake, then the portion left is real. Which means at least 40% of bigfoot and UFO sightings are real.

This is totally a true fact because I posted it on the internet and I am at least 40% sure I am not a fake bot.

We could very well be seeing the end of the "free Internet" as we know it. Once the advertisers realize that most of those "clicks" are not real, the amount they are willing to pay for them will plummet. This will make many websites uneconomical and they will either have to shut down or charge a subscription. We can never have anything nice because of the asshole cheaters.

Based on CAPTCHA?? Of course. Base it all on something that doesn't work. I fail captcha more than half the time. Find and click on all pictures with a dick in them, of course, one panel has a dick which is only 1 pixel in size. FAIL!
Pick out all panels with a traffic light in them. Again, miss the partial light and FAIL!. PIck out all the panels with cars in them, or fences, or storefronts, but they always have ONE friggin' panel with part of something that might or might NOT be applicable to the captcha and now you're assumed to be a bot?
And the list of crappy captchas just goes on and on.

Captchas suck.

What percentage of non-internet media is fake? Likely more than 50% as well.

I've been saying this for like 10 years. As far as I can see, Google and the greater internet is and has always been built on a house of cards. There are a lot of forces that need the willful ignorance to continue. If the advertisers realized their billions aren't doing what they think it is, the whole thing would collapse.

This is one reason I would love to see Johnson & Johnson's numbers before and after they pulled their advertising from YouTube when pewtie pie and others caused that uproar about advertisers ads showing before Nazi/kkk videos and such. Wouldn't be surprised if their sales barely changed all while saving a few hundred million dollars in advertising or whatever.

..... I'd also be prepared to eat my words if their sales took a big hit. People are so damned gullible, maybe seeing baby powder ads before a video of a guy torturing a cat really does make them want to buy that product...

Who would pay real money for Youtube views? How much does Youtube actually pay out? Like 1/10th of a cent per view or something?

I dunno, maybe pink haired "Evangelists" hoping raise more money "To spread the word of God"... Although I have always felt, if God is so great, he can spread his own word.

Yeah, after all this advertisement BS goes belly up, the only thing left will be Interangelists suckering out the poor uneducated misfortunate for the promise of "hope".

That and porn.

Porn and Religion... two things humanity could probably do without, but without those two humanity would never have progressed anywhere past fire-starting and beer-making...

FYI Youtube is wrong according to spell check now... YouTube is the correct grammar.
