So I Need four, at least 20 FT, USB 3 cables for external hard drives. Is that too long of a cable or will that work ok?

Just under 10ft is the recommended max length (for 26awg), but it really depends on the quality of the cable and the size of the conductors.

For that length I would be looking for an active extension cable. I suppose a hub on a long 10' cable is OK with another 10' standard cable. What type of end does the external HDD have on it?

Just get a 20 foot extension cord/power strip and move whatever closer to the drives, lol

are you building a kludgy NAS?
just because you CAN, does not mean you SHOULD.
USB set up like this WILL give you issues at some point.

Ok so why not just get a cheapish 4 drive nas, then use an Ethernet cable etc, heck you can do it with a sbc...
