The sister-in-law wants a gaming rig as close to $600 as possible. She doesnt need a case. How does this look? Anything I should change to make better or cheaper. BF2142 is the game in mind.

Thanks

You can do C2D at that price.

E4300
ASRock 775dual-vsta
2x1gb ddr2
Sunbeam Nuuo 550w (only $60 and it's very good)

everything else, the same.

If you're buying all that and spending that much, you might as well go for the best performing CPU for the money. How about this for roughly $7 more (after rebate):

$163 - Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 Allendale 1.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache
$105 - Biostar TForce965PT, LGA775, Intel P965 Express
$165 - G.Skill 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2-800 F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ
$155 - HIS Hightech H195PRF256DDN-R Radeon X1950PRO 256MB ($175 - $20)
$52 - XClio GoodPower 500W ATX 500W

$640 + tax and shipping (after rebates)

I forgot to add a hard drive in there too.

Take a pick:
$43 - Hitachi Deskstar 7K80 HDS728080PLA380 80GB 7200RPM SATA300
$53 - Western Digital Caviar SE WD1600JS 160GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache
$70 - WD Caviar SE WD2500JS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache
$75 - WD Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 16MB Cache
$80 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250620AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA300 16MB Cache
$90 - WD Caviar SE16 WD3200KS 320GB 7200RPM SATA300 16MB Cache
$95 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS 320GB 7200RPM SATA300 16MB Cache
$110 - Samsung SpinPoint T Series HD400LJ 400GB 7200RPM SATA300 8MB Cache

For raw hard drive speed, nothing beats a Raptor :D (please, make it the 74GB or 150GB model ;))

But a raptor would push it farther away from $600. And I doubt she needs it for BF2142.

Drive's I've tested personally (all on the same platform):
Raptor 150gb: 78MB/s
7200.10 320gb: 65MB/s
WD KS 250gb: 52MB/s
WD JS 160gb: 52MB/s

Tis true, but I never said it wouldn't either ;)

13MB/s more seems like a good jump there. I'll have to test my drives again because that Raptor does seem a bit slow to me. I don't remember what mine was at.
