i just got a 1gb 4870 last night from my sister for xmas, but i cant seem to figure out how to get the image to scale properly with my 46" 1080p Sharp Aquos LCD any resolution under 1920x1080p is surrounded by black bars, the options in the catalyst control center dont seem to do anything productive when activated to help it..

i usually keep my desktop at 1920x1080 so its not an issue when doing normal stuff but when i play some games i prefer 1600x900 because its a happy medium between fugly low resolutions like 1280x720/1366x768 and some times choppy 1920x1080 in some games.

system info:

46" Sharp Aquos 1080p HDTV: LC-46D64U
Vista Ultimate 64bit
Sapphire1GB 4870, 8.12 drivers with CCC
3.2ghz 1600FSB Q6600
4GB DDR2 800mhz 1:1 ratio
ASUS P5Q Pro
X-Fi Xtreme Gamer
Onkyo 7.1 DTS-HD MA / True HD

i had a 8800GTS before this and it seemd to scale everything properly without even having to tell it too

the scaling feature is adjustable in the driver. it has its own pane. i'm posting from work so i don't have my rig, but its in there. easy fix really. there's an override that forces scaling by the gpu rather than by the program.

theres 2 options that i can see, one is under Attributes where you can enable GPU scaling and then have an option to: maintain spect ratio, Scale image to full screen (which i want) and use centerd timing. all of which dont seem to do anything to help it.

the second option is Scaling options with a slider and i already had to use that for 1920x1080 because it had it under scaled to start with and black bars but putting it to 0% fixed that resolution but that option is completely grey when using any res under 1920x1080 because the attributes options are what should be scaling the image properly. but they dont work.

yeah i know but like i said its greyed out for 1600x900 but it works for 1920x1080

have you tries setting the desktop resolution to 1680x1050. scaling it out to fit the screen, then fire up a game at 1680x1050 to see if you get the black boarder.

that res doesnt scale either

Enable GPU scaling and choose maintain aspect ratio or scale to full size

How about disable the GPU scaling?
ive also tried that.

i also took the dvi-hdmi cable threw my reciever then to my tv and it didnt help the only diffrence tdoing it that way tho is the reciever shows up as the display instead of sharp.
