So I need to hide a certain folder full of certain questionable things from the prying eyes of any who decide to get on my computer... And I cant figure out how to do it on Mac OSX. (i'm a recent convert from the PC world).

I'm following THIS GUIDE and it seems to me that creating a folder in the terminal with a " . " (dot) in front of it would be the easiest way for me to have access to the folder and keep it hidden. However, the writer doesnt say how to create a folder in the terminal, and i dont know unix, so i'm SOL. I google searched to no end and didnt come up with an answer...

Any help?

mkdir <NAME OF THE DIRECTORY>
(the <> are not included)

But honestly, I think this is kinda silly, most anyone will able to find your stuff, why not use disk manager to create a appropriately sized encrypted disk image and just mount it whenever you need to access forbidden content.

Because from what I understand, this will not be visible to people accessing the GUI interface and only I will know how to get to it. Most people who will be accessing the computer are complete and utter newbies to Mac os x anyway. Should teh computer fall into the wrong hands though, i doubt that someone will be trying access hidden files and folders and will be more interested in selling my unit to make a profit.

If you're really paranoid, I suggest creating an encrypted disk image to store it on, and then putting said disk image in a hidden folder.

how do you do this in xp , how do you create secret files i mean.

Easy way:

Right click on file/folder, click on hidden in file/folder properties.

to view or hide, go to control panel, click on files and folders, click on view tab, click or unclick view hidden files and folders.

Hide the files in your system library... So that only the admin/root user can access it.

Twas my solution as a young lad.

since the OPs question has been answered, I'll give him a tip:

press Apple(CMD)-Shift-G in finder to pull up the "go to place" or "go to folder" dialouge box (can't remember WTF it's called) the type in the exact location to the hidden directory you created ("/Users/MEH/blah/blah/blah/.notpr0n")

poof easy access to that folder when you want it, and you can only get to it if you know the exact location of that folder

BIG note: that dialogue may save the last thing typed into it, so just go back in to that box and go to /users or something like that

Aw snap dawg. I just want to say thx2u for creating this thread. and thx2everyone who posted. This is good stuff.

I don't have a Mac but may be purchasing one soon and saw this thread. This is hillarious but if spotlight is as good as they say wouldn't it be able to find even the most hidden of files or can you specify a folder not be included in its searches?

How about an external thumb drive that can be password protected / encrypted. You can even hide the thing in unmentionable locations:eek:if you feel that strongly about security; might make you walk funny, but that the price we must pay for security.

Just make a folder somewhere in your User directory and set the permissions so that no one but you can access it. That's what permissions are for.

but if his parents are like mine, they need to know his password...and, well, that makes permissions useless...

but I think he is 18+ and just trying to hide it from occasional friends who stop by to use his account and try to get a little too nosey

Yes, and we won't get into it.

However, the thread does offer some good advice on the other fronts.

You could also create a PGP archive, just remember to secure erase the extracted directory after you've uncompressed it to view its contents. My honest opinion is to go into disk utility and create a disk image and enable encryption, mount the image when you need it then unmount it when your done.

I would use FileVault to encrypt the folder that you have your "personal" stuff on. I keep my "personal" stuff on a usb hard disk, I encrypt it and disconnect it when not in use. However, FileVault is a good encryption program.

more options:

use gmail. set up an automator script to mail all that stuff to a new, anonymous gmail account, then delete the Mail.app sent messages history.

or even better, set up a Boot Camp partition with a minimal Xp install then bury the files in the files system somewhere the system32 folder or whatever. then, set OSX not to mount the XP partition.

even further on the Boot Camp front, there was a program called MagicFolders that would hide a user-designated folder.

Oh, joy! Now I can "wank" away to the collection without being paranoid later.

Would it have been better to label it, "how do you create a folder in terminal, or, how do I hide my penis and my gf's pussy from the prying eyes of others?" (no nudes requests will be filled)
