Step 3: find your TV's media player application, and point it to the computer your have the media server set-up on.
Browse your library and enjoy. There may be some compatibility issues if you're just playing random things you downloaded from torrents, but as long as you stick to 8-bit h.264/h.265 video and stereo audio, it should work.
Can you provide the brand and model of the TV? It may already have something like Plex available, or even better it could be running Android TV which opens up tons of options.
I found Kodi on android tv to be superb, so good i retired the old htpc i was using with my previous TV. Tried the built in DLNA functionality on the TV but it had a lot of compatibility issues that Kodi handled without problem.
I use PLEX and Kodi for my 4k Smart TV and have a Roku and Chromecast for the others. I installed on a dedicated box for just these two. I just recently upgraded to a 4k Smart TV from my previous 1080p. That TV's DLNA feature was a bummer. However my new TV plays every movie in my library plus KODI. I have a Sharp 4k 65in. Unjustice
