When accessing folders over a remote connection, things seem to take a lot longer than they should. All that should be downloaded is the filenames, date modified, and maybe some other attributes of each file, but it feels like a lot more is being downloaded. Anyone know how to speed up folder access in Windows XP? My connection is decently fast, but folder access is a lot faster when working locally rather than remotely.

That's the nature of the beast. You aren't ever going to get folder access to be anywhere near as fast and speedy as when you are local to those files.

It was reasonable on my old laptop over the same connection. But on my new laptop, it totally sucks.

Both laptops were running XP Pro (same config from IT). However, some optimization pack was patched onto the new laptop about a week after I got it. Don't know if that caused it to slow down or not.
