The WD SN550 mentioned a few posts above is the same price for the 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB sizes as Amazon, for those who don't care for Amazon.

Ive been busy can someone please compile a short list with links to these E12 drives and I can updated the title and first post.

This is a very popular thread.

... compile a short list with links....

I can accomodate this request because over the last few weeks I have watched these E12's all creep up in price. $130ish seems pretty common. Here are a few I was watching on Amazon. These are 1TB E12 based according to Maxx's spreadsheet that was mentioned earlier.

Inland $130
Silicon Power $125
Pioneer $125
MyDigitalSSD $130
Digifast $135
Sabrent $140

*Prices as of Jan 24th.

I would have been all over one of these at $100. Unfortunately by the time I was ready for a nvme drive they are where we are today.

I have two of them installed now :cat:

I had to use a very, very slim flexible PCIe 4x riser to plug it into the one PCIe slot that doesn't steal lanes from either the graphics card or the onboard NVMe slot.

In this configuration, both NVMe drives are running at PCIe 3.0 4x, and the graphics card is still at PCIe 3.0 16x. Woo!

Does the adapter sit in the old slot and move it up? I'm looking at the amazon link but it's not clear how it works.

Not that it's ever really at a great price but the WD Black 1TB drive is single sided too.

I saw it at $129 about a month ago at MC on their website.. By the time I got it in the cart, last one at my local spot was gone....

It's a stiff riser cable that keeps its shape when bent, so the female end of the riser is just floating over the last 16x slot.

This arrangement offsets the card pretty significantly, so I used three motherboard standoffs, screwed together, to offset the PCI slot bracket mount point. Between the stiff riser and the screw, it's pretty secure.

Are you looking to do something similar with your motherboard / NVMe drive?

Can someone compile a heat spreaders list for these E12 NVMe drives for me please and Ill add them to the 1st posting. I'm sure many of you would like a compiled list. I will be sure to give you credit. Thank you in advance.

There are still many people out there that this upgrade would greatly benefit in terms of not only storage size but performance as well.

We can give new and old alike the best info out there in one location so they can make the best possible decision for an upgrade or a new build.

Just like to know my options. ;)

Interesting article on NVMe's being cooled with heat spreaders, should you, do you need to.

https://www.tweaktown.com/asktheexperts/299/install-heat-sink-ssd-tame-temperatures-bit/index.html
Nice info.
I like that they pointed out some chipset controllers on the mobo can result in lower speeds.

Unfortunately they dont conclude whether cooling is needed, none of the drives throttled during their tests.
Also, the drives they used are around the E7 era which use less power so wont run as hot as those in this thread.
It would be nice if they did the same tests on newer drives, extending the tests to show when drives throttle.

They didnt cover whether the heatsinks cool the NAND as well and whether NAND longevity is affected by cooling it.
If a heatsink doesnt touch the NAND there is no harm, only a possible help, fitting one in most systems. There is that :)
In a very cold room though, the NAND may need as much heat as possible under idle to prevent excess NAND wear. In this situ a cooler could prevent the SSD from keeping temps high enough.

I've used this one on a bunch of NVMe drives with success: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KDDKDNN

I just cut the included thermal pads down so that they only make contact with the controller and DRAM, avoiding the flash.

I think that Mushkin is a SMI2262 based controller, not the E12. Advertised speeds look impressive tho.

Man I paid 50$ for 512 TLC Sabrent. Its not 80$$.. ouch. Any reason to move from 12.2 to 12.3 firmware?

I have buy 2 PNY XLR8 CS3030 but i can not say which Firmware i have. The name from the Firmware is different. Its not show 12.x or 22.x.

I have buy 2 PNY XLR8 CS3030 but i can not say which Firmware i have. The name from the Firmware is different. Its not show 12.x or 22.x.

These are custom-named firmware but relate to 22.5 and 22.4 (last three alphanumerals). Using newer flash but seems to have full DRAM.

Update - prices creeping up because of global virus. Increase in prices could persist for remainder of 2020.

Expect your PC build to cost an additional 10 - 15% vs 30 days ago.

Glad I updated my home and work PC before the new year.

Price is back up to $149 for Inland 1TB Premium NVMe. Wth tax, $165. Guys at Microcenter said they might not be able to get supply for a few weeks. Price could also get up to $179 or $189 within the month.
