HOT Sennheiser HD650 $319

Just wanted to let everyone know my headphones shipped. I called them again about a %10 off email I received and they also credited me that back for a total price of $244.80 shipped :)
Props to Sennheiser for accepting 3 separate coupons on one item :)

^ that's the best $245 you will have ever spent. great deal.

Yeah it took a few phone calls but I will defiantly be buying from them again if the need ever arises. I was thinking of getting the Shciit Asgard 2 to power these. That way I can also hook up a set of studio monitors to it as well.I was leaning tword the Audioengine A5's. So it would go from the Asus Impact sound card > Asgard 2 > HD 650/A5's? Any thoughts on this configuration? Do I need to fit a DAC somewhere in the line?

I tried this and got denied for the extra promo code. Did you talk to a man or a woman?

i've never owned the Asgard but they're nice looking amps. you already have a DAC in the chain (your sound card :p). i'd try it out with your sound card and see how it goes.

Yeah as you can obviously tell I am very new to pc audio hardware lol. I'm hearing not so good things about the Asus Impacts sound card so I may just opt for the new MSI itx mobo when it comes out and get an external sound card. Thanks for the input regardless.

So who else has gotten them to take the extra 10% off? I called yesterday and spoke with a man and he denied it saying because it went "viral" and it was a p;ricing error he wouldnt budge. But im still getting my order.

The gentleman I spoke to was named Ron I believe. He said my extra %10 will be credited back to my account in the next 2-3 days.

I got ahold of Ron he had me email him the email i got and credited back the 10% to my Paypal account.

Now I should be around 244$ for a pair of 500$ headphones. :D

Thanks for all the tips!

These cans are so far beyond any headset it's comical. Definitely worth it to wire a separate mic. These are true world-class, neutral reference grade headphones.Back in the day these open cans were the premiere choice for pro gamers (Quake 2 / Quake 3 days). They are great for positioning and you will hear_every_detail (provided you are in a silent room - there is NO isolation). If I remember correctly in Quake 2 you can hear when an opponent picks up an item no matter where they are on the map, so sound is extremely important for armor and weapon pickup timing and enemy positioning.

I hear you on that, but my Audio Technica headphones I purchased a long time ago have only been used a couple times due to never being able to find a good mic solution that does not leave me rolling over or getting tangled up in mic cables, or talking into a mic and relying on software solutions that never seem to work well to cancel out noise. So much to the extent that I have switched back to a cheap sennheiser headset, even though the other headphones sound far superior. I prefer to not have anything with a cable attached to me though so generally I use 5.1, but I even turn that off when gaming with others and go back to my cheap headset when communication is important (Dayz, BF4 or anything multiplayer with my friends on TS really). I used to be really into audio and would love to get a REAL amp and set like this someday, I just wish someone would make something this good with an optional mic.

I have to admit I'm confused on the Amp options, I would imagine I would want one without a DAC, but then again would you get better sound without using a sound card at all and using some kind of HDMI option + DAC in the amp?

check out the Sennheiser PC360 or Beyerdynamic MMX300 if you're serious about finding a decent headset. if it's something you rarely use though it might not be worthwhile.

you need a DAC somewhere in your system whether it's a sound card, a dedicated external unit, or a receiver (to satisfy your HDMI interest). there's tons of options. AMP/DAC combos are just two different circuits bundled into the same box.

do u know why the promo codes published here doesn't work for me?

The deal is over. The promo codes were only working for a few hours until they sold all the HD 650's eligible for the codes.

I just received my shipping confirmation! I hope I get them sometime early next week. My AMI Musik DS5 amp and DAC should arrive tomorrow!

Yeah the guy on the phone said it was an error and ended up going "viral" as he stated it. The codes were only mean't for one person haha.

Got it today and listening to it through my Zero DAC/Amp right now (Queen flac rips). It sounds very different from the HD595's I have been using and I think it will take me a while to get used to it. It takes a LOT more power to drive than the 595 (almost 50% more on my amp's volume dial). The high's are much better articulated and sharper, almost harsh, and it is not as forgiving with poor quality recordings as the 595.

Hmm 'harsh highs' and 'unforgiving' is the polar opposite of how the HD650's sound to my ears and how they're described by everyone else.

FWIW,

I just ordered a Schiit Vali amp to pair with these HD650. It is a tube hybrid amp.

It just came out (this week I think). There is all sorts of hype for it over at head-fi, but there is very little actual information on it yet.

Still, if it is even half as good as some people are claiming, I will be happy. It is only $119 (a fraction of what decently powered tube amps typically run).

I was decided between this and the Magni. They were about the same price, and it was a little more exciting ordering something new and relatively unknown (but from a reputable company). So I went with it. :)

The Zero isn't the most powerful amp out there (but still should power the HD650 decently). Maybe it is straining a little at the volume level you have it at.

If you have not done this already, try turning up all the digital volume settings to 100% on your computer. Max them all out. Then just use the Zero's volume control to get it to an appropriate level. That might help it some (it should allow the headphones to get to the same audible volume level without drawing as much power, leaving more room for the dynamics).

(Also I am a believer in speakers/headphones needing to burn in a bit. But I generally notice the difference in the bass, not so much in the highs.)

If anyone isn't happy with theirs and wants to pass on a good deal, PM me. :p

On the other hand, "The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" sounds fantastic.

Interesting. I haven't logged onto Head-Fi in a few months. This is the first I've heard of the Vali. Let us know how you like it.

With a couple of days of burn in these headphones are really starting to grow on me. Well worth the price, in my opinion.

Please only do offers to buy/sell in FS/FT.

Thank you.

You need to burn them in for a while. I did mine for 100 hours. They will calm down a bit.

Also it could be the DAC/AMP as well. My Little Dot MKV and my Audio GD 15.32 sound very different.

My God the Valhalla is sexy, I have always loved the visible tube look.
Been wanting a desktop amp just never procured one, have been running an amped ASUS card to power my cans.

+1 to that, I was thinking of going with the Asgard 2 since it is a $100 bucks cheaper and I can then hook up the powered desktop monitors I plan to get to it as well. Anyone running a Asgard 2 connected with studio monitors ? Just wondering how it performs.
edit: Fyi received my HD650's and man those things scream quality, though I have yet to listen to them yet since I have no way to power them :(

If they're anything like the HD 580s that I had, you can still listen to them and they'll sound really good. They just won't truly shine without a decent amp. :)

he's talking about the Vali which has subminiature tubes enclosed inside the case. instead of tube glow you get an orange LED that's visible through the vents.

I am aware and when looking at the product line I saw the Valhalla and fell in love.

The asgard 2 has rca in and rca outs. The outs are just pass-through outs.

Basically, it should not even affect the signal to the powered speakers at all. It just allows you to connect speakers and headphones from the same output from your computer. It is just a convenience thing, not a performance thing.

With that said, it is incredibly convenient to have rca outs. The speakers on my desktop setup are passive (not powered). I have an Emotiva Mini-X speaker amp to power them. It has rca outs as well. Again, it does not add anything to the signal, it just allows me to daisy chain a headphone amp to it, so I can use the speakers or headphones (or both), coming from the same cable out of my computer.

If I didn't already have the Emotiva, I might consider something like the Asgard. Those outs are nice if you intend to have speakers and headphones.

I paired this with a FiiO E09k AMP and e17 DAC, the difference is night and day without them.

I tested against just plugging straight into my xfi sound card on my desktop.

I should of picked up more of these haha. They are the best sounding cans i have ever gotten my mitts on.

Oh and I am still waiting on the Vali. Fedex picked it up from Schitt on the 2nd (monday), and it left their facility on a truck that night. They have not updated the tracking since then.

I am very anxious to try it out. All I have now is a very weak amp (Astro Mixamp). The HD650 sounds ok on it, but I can tell it is underpowered.

Speaking of tube amps (since you guys brought up the Valhalla), the HD650 is said to pair extremely well with the Bottlehead Crack tube amp (and especially well with the Speedball upgrade). Link: http://www.bottlehead.com/store.php/products/crack-otl-headphone-amplifier-kit

This is a DIY kit though. So you need to know how to solder, or at least willing to learn. There are people selling them premade though, but they usually add $150-200 to the cost.

If you are considering the Valhalla or the Lyr (or any tube amp for that matter), you guys should check out the Bottlehead Crack.

I have not heard it myself, but there are many many many people out there that consider the Bottlehead Crack amp with the Speedball upgrade and paired with the HD650 to be an endgame setup.
