amazon - North Star has the highly sought after refurbished Philips DVP642 DVD/CD/MP3/Divx Player on sale for $39.99, $6.99 shipping.

This is currently the hacker's favorite DVD player. Plays those downloaded movies. DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, MP3-CD, MPEG-4, Picture-CD and DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x, AVI. 4x video upsampling enhances all outputs.

Also plays JPEG, mpg, Xvid, PAL DVDs, PAL Divx, KVCD, SRT. It also has Progressive scan and 4x upsampling. You can just dump these files on a DVD and it will start playing them. No need to specially format the disk. We've verified it ourselves. Videohelp.com Info

with shipping it ends up being $52+ while BB has them on sale for $54 new.

just an FYI. not a bad old player though!

so do i just burn a divx or xvid move to cd and pop it in??

Thanks for the post. I got one of these at Target 18 months ago and it is the best DVD player I've ever owned. PLAYS EVERYTHING! I may have to get another just to have it.

I just got one of these bad boys from CompUSSR before X-mas for my self... think it was on sale for 44.99 or sumthin. Nice DVD player though, but don't update the firmware like someone else said. I did and it turned my kick ass dvd player into a peice-o-crap that wouldn't even play a store bought dvd. But I took it back and they replaced it no prob. :D I also noticed that Wal-Mart near me now carries these players 49.99 also not a bad deal...

Yes. Just went out and bought one of these a week ago at Target for $60 to replace our failing Sony unit (it produces a hum through the speakers of any device it is attached to, yet another reason I'm boycotting Sony for awhile since it was just past warranty when ist started to happen). Philips could make a better remote (the one place Sony really shone) but the player so far has been great. I have to burn a couple DivX movies to CD to try them this week.

$54 for New you cannot beat that. Thanx

what i need is a DVD player that will do 720p over component output for less than $100...

find me one and ill be forever grateful!

This thing plays everything you throw at it, and is worth the $54, but the video quality on it is lacking (I have one).

I have 2 of them and they both are flawless i see no lose of picture quality on the movies i watch from it stop watching those cams ( LOL ) and the picture will be better xvid 4 life :D

WTF

I disagree. I have no complaints at all from this unit. I have had mine about a year and half and it plays everything I throw at it. It even plays some things my computer(s) won't play.

Picture quality is great.. maybe not as good as a $400 unit (I have not compared much) but it is very very nice!

Best DVD player evarrrrrrrrrr.. I <3 mine. :) (yes, seriously plays nearly everything I throw in it)
Picture quality is great... it even looks almost perfect on my 46'' DLP HDTV. =)

I got it when it first came out. It was $40 when I bought it from Walmart but I guess the price has gone up. It does play anything you throw at it and you can even upgrade the firmware using a CD-R. It has failed on some SVCDs that I have tried to play, but they were crap anyways. It plays all divx and xvid discs and they look great.
However, it can not fast forward or rewind in divx or xvid mode so keep that in mind. Also it can loose audio synch if you pause a divx video for too long. I still think its the best ever though.

Although most are now only doing HDMI or DMI upconversion, if you look hard you can find component upconversion units in that price range. The movie industry (MPAA) is pushing mfgs to stop component u/c because there is no DRM possible over analog.

Samsung makes several, the DVD-HD841, HD850, HD941, and HD950. Listed in order of price, with the HD841 going for $84.99 at eCost.com. The Samsungs come stock with component u/c disabled but it can be enabled with a simple remote control sequence.

Zenith DVB318 with the older firmware is around $130, if you can find it. The new firmware broke the component upconversion (some people have reported success with back-flashing a newer model with an older firmware).

See http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=613613 for a few other options.

I am able to fast forward and rewind in xvid/divx mode.. odd.

Not hot!

You can get a new unit for that price with no shipping at WalMart and not have to wait. 47 bucks last i checked. Not trying to thread crap but thats what I paid for it at good ole Wally World.

And yes this player is the sh!t. Played everything I ever tossed at it in great quality. Even crappy divx rips looked good on TV

I've got two of them here as well. As everybody else has said it plays almost everything I throw at it. I have had some issues with some DiVX rips of Oz that causes the audio/video to go out of sync. What I have to do is pause it and go back or forward for a sec and that seems to fix it (temporarily anyway).

I also ordered a copy of Shaun of the Dead from Amazon.uk which was in PAL. I used the remote control hack and set it to region 0 and it played everything fine. Did the PAL to NTSC conversion flawlessly.

To make it region free: With the tray open press 789, OK, 0 (for region 0) and OK.

Those of you who get audio sync problems or pixelation problems should try hitting the system menu button twice. It seems to clear up most issues (don't ask me why :)

Its an extremely nice unit for ~$50. I got mine close to 2 years ago and love it.

Great Player, but not a hot deal. Get a new one for a few dollars more at Walmart, or for slightly more at Target.

If picture quality were everything, you wouldn't be considering a divX'ed movie player.

divx'ed movies lose quality, much like mp3's lose quality over wav.

is the quality loss signifigant? No.. but is it real? YES

I have to also say that this is a great player, but would probably be best to buy new for slightly more.
I got the 642/37 from BestBuy (only bought there since I had a gift card from x-mas) for $60 - 10% off Coupon - $30 Gift Card = $29.09 out of pocket.

I dont have the best TV in the world, but the component out to the flat screen with digital audio to the sony reciever with 4x upsampling = darn nice movie experience.

I had the LiteOn LVD2100 before this one, and this unit is MUCH nicer...

SO... if your really hard up for $10-20 then buy the refurbed, but I would just go with a new one from walmart/target/bestbuy etc...

Just my .000000034 cents :D

D.

I have three of these bad boys.

Update to the newest firmware out and all is good.

Most recent firmware increased the mpeg video quility quite a bit in my opinion. The video lost most of it's grainy pixelation and was much more smooth.

It's either this bad boy or you can move it up a notch and buy the OPPO OPDV971H player.

Oh well I didn't read the thread and ordered from Amazon. It should make it nice watching those movies now, especially since I wont have to download the dvd or convert to dvd. Woo hoo.
