Figures i sent a drone out to make a 1 hour round trip to MC, when i could have saved like $20 bucks if i dont have to pay tax on the amazon ones...

    The microcenter warranty destroys AmaCons.

How is that? Silicon Power, Sabrent etc all have 5 years and microcenter has 3 years. I think having bought something from Amazon makes the warranty even better. I got a Vivo dual monitor arm from them almost 3 years ago fulfilled by amazon (has 3 year warranty), started having problems holding the monitors up so i contacted Amazon and they issued me a free return label and gave me a refund no questions asked, it wasn't even their product.

I think the point is you can walk into any microcenter for the next 3 years and have it exchanged.

I think the only difference, is the sabrent as a big sticker across the whole thing, which may affect cooling, and the sabrent doesnt support 512E on any of the drives. On the other hand only the 1tb x4 from MC has the phison 12, and i do not know if it support 512E.

Most of these are moot points anyway.

Within 3 years are you gonna still.keep that ssd?

I walk in microcenter, tell them drive is bad, they say ok here's a store credit go get what you want with it. Or give me a nee drive.

Amazon, You have to explain the problem, ship the drive, maybe they have them in stock maybe not, they may ship.you an alternate but like part. You have to wait maybe a week turn around from bad ssd to new arrival.

Again who keeps an ssd for 5 years realistically. In 5 years we might have a totally new interface or ssds that can do 60gbps which is double this drive. .

Length of warranty is not the same as ease of use and quality of that warranty.

I still use my old ssds, including an old 60gb corsair one. Even such old ssds are still miles better than mechanical drives, and operate just as well for windows loading and most programs & games.

I'm genuinely curious, what applications do you use where you would feel the need to replace this drive in a few years? I find my nvme drive to be so fast that the only thing that uses it's full speed are speed tests and large file transfers over 10gbit. Gaming shows no benefit in general loading, map loading, or snappiness over my plain sata ssd. Also what do you do with your old drives?

I still have OCZ gen 1 drives, that i use for router boxes etc...

But if i look into my crystal ball...

wooooo woooo have drives that are 1/2 the speed of ddr4 and have almost instant on pcs, or maybe 4-10TB for the price of todays 1TB. Then again progress has been pretty much in the toilet for pcs in the last decade, other than video cards and the jump from sata to nmve.

We need a Microcenter to open up in Florida. Anywhere in Florida. I will drive the entire length of the state to get to it.

Just have a member here do you a solid. Probably just cheaper to pay the shipping fee vs gas/toll

If there was a microcenter in my state that would work. Amazon, i do the customer service chat, takes me like 5 mins and get an instant label. Refund is issued as soon as ups gets the package. Never have to leave my house, free ups pick up is great. Order a replacement and you get it with 2 day shipping.

none of the Phison E12 controllers support 512E, they are all 4k.

Regarding the sticker, Silicon Power drive has a sticker too. It actually ran cooler by 10c then the Inland microcenter drive.. I imagine the Sabrent will be the same and at $10-20 cheaper factoring in tax it's a no brainier for me.

The link mentioned in the hanselmen article about "the most popular blog posts on the topic of defrag and SSDs under Windows is by Vadim Sterkin" was borked .

Vadim (aka ВАДИМ СТЕРКИН) posted the correct link in the comments http://www.outsidethebox.ms/why-windows-8-defragments-your-ssd-and-how-you-can-avoid-this/

Once again some interesting stuff on ssd's and Microsoft's handling of them.

    here are some takeaways;

Windows 7 sends TRIM commands to an SSD when files get deleted. Windows 8 takes it one step further by also sending TRIM commands for the entire SSD volume when the PC becomes idle.

Windows 10 does ssd management better, that's just my thoughts after seeing the changes from 7 to 8 and looking at the defrag utility in Windows 10.

And above all remember Vadims info is from 2013.

    EDIT
Actually the whole comments section under the hanselman article might be worth a read. It's a good back and forth between Hanselmen and Vadim.
    It made me laugh.

Amazon does that 90 days or more after the sale? I mean yea if it breaks in 30 days they do that, but i have not tried a "warranty" return.

One thing I am picking up on is that a lot of you are very much concerned about stuff breaking ......... I deal with tons and tons of parts. If handled correctly, I almost never seen anything break or go bad. It's always cheap power supplies that go and even over the past few years, that's gotten better.

Yeah, i had the item like 2 years and 9 months and got a full refund of it.

I'm not worried about the item breaking, though the heat issue is a little concern. I factor the warranty etc more into resale value. 2 years down the road being able to say I've got a 1tb drive with 3 years of warranty left vs 1 makes for a better sale, another reason i keep all original boxes.

Honestly, if the controller is designed correctly, the core of the SSD has no concept of files/filesystems and is not subject to fragmentation. Only the bits that handle metadata could be affected if poorly designed.

If these folks have any clue of what they are doing, fragmentation isn't a thing. Also, TRIM isn't as important as you think it is.

Source: I spent 7 years introducing flash storage to the market at Fusion-io, and at SanDisk.

    We're all just learning here.
If you can link or source any info it would be greatly appreciated. You've seen what my research has yielded.

Saying trim is not important while the OS commands the ssd to automatically do it behind the scenes is akin to saying breathing isn't important.

how are inland drives overall in terms of reliability ?
I have 2 1tb spinners (7200) that's probably a decade old now. I store multimedia files on it so nothing super important, Wondering if it's worth moving it all to an SSD.

Nobody can answer that. "inland" is microcenters house brand just like newegg has rosewell. As for the drive, ALL these drives have been released in the last 30 days, so no one has long term data on the design. The chipset had alpha firmware build for review samples 90 days ago. These drives are as bleeding edge as you can get.

its too early to tell. Look at samsung, the evo 840 was bleeding edge performance at the time from a name brand, and it turned out to be the worst ssd released in the last 5 years, long term.

I have only had 2 ssds die, and those were from 1st gen i7 notebooks.

For those of you that want this NVMe drive you better get it fast before they jack up the price.

I was going to get the SSD 1 TB version of this drive. https://www.microcenter.com/product/508183/1tb-3d-nand-sata-iii-6gb-s-25-internal-solid-state-drive#

I took a screen shot of it with my phone two days ago so I would know the exact version to get. The price was $89.99.

I go in today to buy it and guess what, those bastards jacked up the price by $5. I show the lady who works there my phone with the screen shot and she says, "That looks like a screenshot, we can't honor that price because we don't know if it was edited."

I just walked straight out. I'll just wait till SSD prices come down another 50% this year. I'm boycotting MC.

you are boycotting them because they had a midweek madness sale and you missed it?

Are you boycotting because you're butt hurt, or because you did not follow the stores well documented price match policy or because you are upset about current market conditions that Microcenter has no control over, or that a store changed the price on a product or .. ... ..
Needless to say your boycott will single handedly bring them to their knees. Not

Over $5 bucks? Come on man. Pocket change!

Now yesterday I had my wife hit bestbuy on the way home from work to get s price adjustment for the 65" Samsung 4k TV we bought weeks earlier for $916 and it was on sale Sunday-monday for $849.99. Here she calls me and says its $899 there telling me..

Here they advertised it in there Sunday add but the kicker was ya had to add it to cart to see the price! How sneaky of a sale add is that!

Was $849.99 and figured it would be all week and NOT! I lost out on fucking $70 bucks and I'm an elite member.. now I was pissed!

I'll be watching, and I have like a week or so. Next time I see that price lowered I'm there!

    Bastards.

Yes, boycotting them. I buy 99.999% of my stuff on Amazon anyways so I don't have to deal with people. Go on ebay and see how many resellers are selling those same drives for $130-$150. After taxes, shipping, ebay fees how much money are they making? It's sad.

Guys, it's the principle, not about the money. Lady there accused me of photoshopping the price. I guess maybe they had issues in the past? Maybe people were showing them screenshots of Radeon R9 Fury X cards for $99 or something.

If by multimedia files you mean videos that you only read now, absolutely not worth it. Doing 4k video editing or possibly even high end photography? ssd makes more sense. All of my plex server is on 5900rpm 4tb drives and 5400 rpm 8tb drives, and I have no problem with multiple people accessing my 1080p & under videos at the same time (no 4k here.)

But i do have a ssd for my unraid scratch drive, and plex(not media) is hosted on said ssd...

I kinda just bought this inland drive just to declutter my case wiring a bit.

Im still a bit salty that the itx boards have the m2 slot, onthe back, them bastards.

FYI, I just went to buy a 512GB one from Microcenter and the first one they gave me had a P5012-E12C-xy (can't remember last two numbers, but it wasn't 27). I asked to see a second 512GB unit and it had the same P5012-E12-27 chip pictured in the OP so I got that one.

    Edit: good thing I did:

    PS5012-E12 PCIe Gen3x4 NVMe 256GB ~ 8TB 3,450/3,150 MB/s 600,000/600,000 IOPS U.2, M.2, AIC
    PS5012-E12C PCIe Gen3x4 NVMe 128GB ~ 1TB 2,100/1,700 MB/s 420,000/420,000 IOPS M.2

I was going to do that, as I mentioned earlier in thread, can you post some benches please. I'm interested in IOPs more so than just raw transfers.

Use as ssd bench for iops.

I have this currently. this is an OEM drive from a Lenovo X1 that I was able to salvage to my desktop. Would this inland make that much of an improvement that i'd notice ?

I'm running into all kinds of trouble trying to install Windows on this thing. During my first attempt it just errored out in the middle of install. So I tried again, deleting the partitions it created and reformatting. It made it through this time until the first reboot in which I get this:

    3QjyBae.jpg

Anyone know what gives? I updated my BIOS to the latest, redownloaded/recreated a Windows 10 bootable USB drive, switched USB ports... Same result every time. Makes it through initial install, then shows me the above screen on reboot. Is there anything I can try in command prompt? Maybe formatting in a different way than the Windows installer does?
