if you could find reasonably priced boards, that would be great! Also, really too bad you can't overclock much on these. Otherwise, for home production etc and rock solid reliability, these are a great deal!

I'm running one of these now in an Intel DX79TO motherboard that I got new on ebay for like 125$ shipped, works great. That board leaves a little to be desired, but its an upgrade over the x5650 I was running. I also had success running these on a Gigabyte GA-7PESH1(dual cpu) mobo, which I got for under 200$ shipped.

I really wish I could get a barebones Dell C6220 for a reasonable price.

Not sure if it's worth it to swap out a 3930k. Probably going to need to wait for the Ivy system pulls to become available.

Hmmmm I could def use one for my home server and run some dev VMs off it. It doesn't require ECC does it? I do have a supermicro X79 board collecting dust.

Can't find much info about OCing these.
Do they support BCLK/FSB straps? Max multi looks to be 33x.

it isn't even remotely worth it. they perform almost identically at stock clocks and you can't overclock these like you can the 3930k.

can someone explain what the deal is with these xeons getting sold at such ridiculously low prices? my first encounter with it was the X5650, same ebay seller too. just doesn't make any sense.

decommissioned compute. pc recyclers buy up a ton of gear from big business and sell it all. you can get complete R620's with two of these, 64GB+ DDR3 and some SAS (sometimes SSD) drives for as little as a grand on ebay now.

What the other guy below said. The X5650s were going by the hundreds (thousands even) for like $75 a year ago. I was considering buying dual 1366 to go with it but all the boards were used and didn't want something with zero warranty at all. Now the Sandy Bridge-EP CPUs are starting to get dirt cheap and you can still snag brand new boards for them (although they are pricey).

Guess I lucked out with timing:

Unless you want/need the extra cores or the ability to run dual cpu and a ton of ram. The i7's are probably better for you.

Been following the prices of this model for a while now; didn't expect the price drop to be so fast (they were $160 last week).
Looks like it'll be the X5650 of this generation, pity the lack of BCLK OC'ing makes them slower than a hex core unless you really want to run a dual 2011 setup.

It doesn't require ECC.

Cool thanks for the confirm.

But ya these are just server pulls, either upgrades to newer/faster or companies that liquidate for next to nothing and these salvage companies are doing them a favor by hauling and disposing. Its really not that different than the car salvage/scrap business.

Too bad these don't oc much at all. I'd replace my 2500k with one if I could get it up to 3.5+ GHz.

Hmm, guess they're gone. It's a tempting upgrade to my dual L5639 server, but nothing I really need. Especially since I'd need a new motherboard too.

Price is no longer $90. Its up to $109 but still good. I was tempted to upgrade my dual opteron esxi box but will keep it for now.

I didn't buy 77! Just sayin

You know, when I saw this deal I tried to get on Skype mobile to IM you but it kept failing. Idk why I didn't just send a PM on here but when I saw that 77 I literally though "wonder if Todd bought those".

I just bought one of these yesterday (offered $100 BIN) to build a cheapish medium gaming rig from my brother's neighbor who was jealous of his gaming rig. I put one into my brother's rig last week and it runs everything great with a 780 gtx at 1080p. People looking to switch from 1366 xeons probably won't see much benefit if any though since these can't be OC'ed.

If i was building out a fresh el cheapo 2P home server right now, i'd be grabbing 2 of these bad boys + a good C60x board ASAP.

Hell, if i had an existing 1366 2P build, i'd be replacing it with this stuff. The platform IO advancement alone would be worth it.
