i didnt know there was still huge hype over them, i STILL have an unopened one left over from christmas that i didnt sell and almost forgot I still had it.
the one I bought when they launched, i hardly ever use it, just sits next to the tv collecting dust.

they sell out as fast as stores get them, ebay that bad boy, they are going for $320 to $380

They're in stock everywhere locally, finding them is not an issue (mall, walmart, CC, BestBuy, EB, etc.). Must be larger cities having problems.

Finding them IS an issue many places. After 5 weeks trying finally got one for the kids. No stores within 70 miles of us had them for more than an hour. People are still calling when the store opens on freight days to rush in to buy them (which made a couple wasted trips for me). We finally got one when Fred Meyers decided to 'raffle' off the right to buy on 11 of them. About 25 people where there but we drew one of the tickets.
Kids love it, and I am actually enjoying it more than any console I have bought. I started out with Pong (im old) and bought every nintendo, first two playstations, one sega system, and something else, cant remember the name.

Still almost impossible to find here too. A lot of stores still have the old "No Wii's, don't ask" signs up in the windows. I can't believe the demand is still so high...crazy.

Wii's? Might as well just buy a brick attached to another smaller brick as the controller and swing it around like a monkey trying to knock some bananas of a tree.

I live in a town with less than 40K near smaller metropolitan areas... none of them have any Wiis.

the high demand is partially nintendo's fault imo (at this point i think they are doing it on purpose). even over a year after its release, nintendo seems to still always have manufacturing issues with wiis. i work at my local target part time in electronics, and we only actually get a shipment of wiis like once a month. when we do get a shipment its generally around 20-30 units...of course they last maybe an hour after we open. actually, until the shipment we received last week, my store hadnt received a shipment since about 1.5 weeks BEFORE CHRISTMAS, nor had any BB, CC, walmart, gamestop, etc. you would think after this amount of time, nintendo would have ramped up production and/or fixed any issues with the manufacturing process like sony did when the ps2 was in crazy demand. bottom line is that wiis are still in such demand because nintendo simply doesnt supply the consoles at a reasonable pace....stores getting 10 wiis in a month is a bit ridiculous imo.

id bet that if stores received wiis at a staggered pace, instead of one large shipment a month demand would also go down a bit since people would believe they could just drop by and pick one up rather than having to camp outside and beat everyone else to the store.

Sheesh, I may end up selling mine, I've had it for about a year and hardly ever play it.

While I think its annoying (my girlfriend has been trying to get one for quite a while now) I think its a pretty smart marketing tactic for Nintendo. Control the supply and and you keep the demand for the system high. Sure, you might end up with a few annoyed customers, but the payoff is much greater than the very low number of people who might say "screw this" if they cant find one for a while. Not to mention, while stores employee's might get a bit aggravated by everyone asking all the time, the store itself probably loves it when customers come in with the intention of only buying a wii, finding out they don't have any, and then picking up some media or a new keyboard or monitor or TV or whatever. Great economic strategy of Nintendo if it is being done on purpose, which I have believed it is for a very long time now.

That being said, if anyone is looking to sell one my girlfriend is looking still :D

oh theres no doubt if it is indeed being done on purpose, it is definitely a great tactic to keep the demand and hype on their system very high. as far as the consumer goes though, its a pretty large shaft imo.

also, just so you know. as far as target goes, if you ever see a wii pictured in the weekly ad that comes out every sunday morning (or sometimes saturday depending on where you live) the store will definitely have wiis that SUNDAY morning. in fact, it is target policy to have at least one of every item in the ad available when the store opens on sundays. because of this, stores will often hold wiis (or whatever item) in the stockroom until sunday morning due to the item being pictured in the ad...and no, they cannot pull them out of the back before then, in fact, they will just tell you they dont have any. hopefully you and your gf can use that little tidbit of info in your search for a wii.

Just curious, but has anyone else noticed that the 360 Premium/Pro edition is nowhere to be found? I live in OKC and I seriously have not seen one since before Christmas. Elite's/Arcade's and even H3's are more prevalent than the Premium/Pro. I wonder what gives?

Sorry for the brief hijack.

At this point, I definitely think Nintendo is causing a supply shortage on purpose. I don't see any reason why their supply can't meet up with demand at this point. I've been living in Germany for over 4 months now and frankly I'm surprised that there's still a shortage back in the US. Pretty much all the electronic stores I go to here have Wii's in stock and I even think some of them are still left over from the holiday season. Granted, that's speculation on my part but I see no reason for a surplus here and a shortage in the US. After all, I'm pretty sure all Nintendo has to do is flip a switch for the NTSC/PAL difference and throw in a different power adapter and POW, another Wii for North America. Anyway, I'm not going to be state-side for awhile but I do expect to see plenty of Wii's on the shelf for me to purchase when I do.

Actually, it's pretty much accepted by logical people that Nintendo is *not* doing it on purpose. Look at the numbers of Wii's they've produced and sold compared to other consoles. They're putting them out as fast as they can, and the demand has clearly exceeded their expectations.

I too am puzzled by the Wii frenzy ...the majority of games are crap ...yet the system sells like crazy. I did have a couple friends and two family members that bought them ...but, after the controller novelty wore off & they discovered how bad the games were ... they sold them. However ...I will buy one myself sometime in the future for Gamecube backwards compatibilty & the rare A+ Wii game that gets released.

Nintendo would be simply retarded to limit supply, and they wouldnt do it for the retail chains in hope someone would come in for a Wii and get something else...what does Nintendo care about that for? The unit itself is pretty old...its a GameCube with the Wii-mote, theres no way they arent making a ton of money per unit, so cranking out as many as they can would be in their best interest. Another thing, the large chains tend to horde them in there warehouses so they can send them out every couple a weeks and gaurantee the store has at least n Wii's.

We may be getting pretty far off track for a Hotdeals thread, but one of the reasons Wii's are in such demand is the age range of the player base. In our town they actually have groups of seniors at the the local retirement home playing Wii. Its a great form of low inpact/range of motion exercise, and the people who run the place encourge it.
My mom and dad (who are NOT in a rest home  )have played it and they are 69 and 63. There may be some old codgers playing xboxes and playstations, but nowhere near the amount playing Wii's. From 3 year olds to 90 year olds.... that a pretty impressive market share.

With Smash brothers out next week, you're really gunna have fun finding wii's. Get them now because that game is going to kick ass

i had my wii since 2nd week after launch... don't play it much but when i do its always fun..
i still can't believe 1yr+5mnths later this thing is still OOS almost everywhere

did you see it on their website ad or what? because i cant find it anywhere on the weekly ad on their website.

it is in TOMORROW's ad!! A friend of mine works there and lets me peek at the ads

The Circuit City in Keizer Oregon had about 10 of these left on a table up front at 3:30 this afternoon.

So in response to every dumbass saying there are no games, I just counted and I have 10 (or 9 depending on how you count wii sports):
  1. Wii Sports
  2. Zelda
  3. Madden 07
  4. Monkey Ball
  5. Paper Mario
  6. Metroid
  7. No More Heroes
  8. Guitar Hero 3
  9. Mario Galaxy
  10. Mario Strikers

Given that, and the upcoming Smash Brothers and Mario Kart, all the naysayers can just STFU already.

Heh, I say Nintendo should divert shipments from all the smaller cities to just the major metropolitan areas. Then, IFF (if and only if) smaller cities need more do you send additional shipments. Kinda like sending 30 units into Idaho, and only 5 of them get bought whereas the 20 shipped into NYC or DC are gone almost instantly. Just a stupid decision from Nintendo in that respect.

Do I detect Wii-rage?

Nah just sick of bullshit.

Bravo on the IFF, that needs to circulate more. Isn't the shipping/distribution reliant more on the stores than on nintendo though? Doesn't each retailer order and ship out from their warehouses?

They've flat out said that the demand never went down after the initial holiday season. They were planning on stocking up over the summertime to deal with last years holiday season, and they were never able to. It surprised everyone, and they even doubled production to try and keep up.

I didn't say that Nintendo would limit the supply for retail chains so that people would go in for the Wii and buy something else when it wasn't there. I simply said that retail chains probably like that that happens even though I am sure that the employees are sick of everyone asking whether there are any Wii's in the back, when they are getting more Wii's, if they could hold one for them, blah blah blah.

As for it being "simply retarded" for Nintendo to limit supply, I very highly disagree. Here it is over a year later and the hype and demand for the system is still high. It makes for good publicity for the system to constantly be in states of shortage as the only bad publicity for things like this (really for any electronics, for that matter) would be a significant number of units failing shortly out of the box. Your average Joe equates high demand, shortages, and a decent resale value to a very good product.

It does have its drawbacks to intentionally limiting supply as many have pointed out. Consumers may feel a bit shafted by the company when they try for weeks or even months to get a product and they just cant seem acquire one, some people might get too aggravated and just say "Screw this" and abandon buying one altogether or at least postpone it until the systems are outdated and then just buy it used from someone else, etc. So it has its drawbacks as well as its positive points. Whether it is what Nintendo is doing or if they really just are having manufacturing issues that they can't work out for some reason, I can't say that I personally know as I don't work for them
