So I have a little bit of a problem. I run a couple web sites with a LOT of data stored on them for one of my old time favorite games, but recently I've noticed that I've been getting hit with a LOT of request from certain hosts. Now this wouldn't be much of a problem, but some of these host are downloading 100+ GB of data from one of the sites that only has ~50GB of data to download.

So I tried to resolve the host name to an IP, so I can just ban it from my server altogether, but strangely enough I can't get it to resolve to an IP.

This is the hostname: x173.bbn2-009.lipetsk.ru

This is the site I usually use to resolve host names and to get information on it.

http://network-tools.com/

It turns up nothing, so I did a look up on the lipetsk.ru hostname and concluded that its IP was that of a 195.x.x.x number, so I seen that the owner of that IP also owns 195.255.255.255, so I banned that entire range from my server.

Does that seem strange to anyone?

Just look at your webserver logs to find the IP. I've never had to resolve a name to block someone.
