Horny for a subwoofer

Here's the first measurements of the horn subwoofer build. 100db at 0,5 watts not bad. The resonance at 50hz is caused by the flimsy shipping crate the sub sits on currently. It weighs in excess of 120 kilos.

It would go deeper but it's high passed at 18hz in order to give it a 2500 watt power handling.

Does the driver you're using compare to the LMS-Ultra 5400? :-D

I'm using the 21" 18Sound 21LW1400. It's relatively cheap and has an incredible 52mm mechanical x-max.

With this enclosure the linear x-max of +- 9,5 mm will yield 130db@20hz and Xmech is north of 135db. With just one of these. I'm building two.

Mind you they're coming to an actual movie theater. I'm going to build a downscaled version for my home theater though.

Due to the horn loading the cone moves only a couple of millimeters at 20hz. At 15hz the mechanical x-mech is already reached at 130db output which is why the high pass filter is required to protect it.

I'm still breaking in the driver so I didn't run more than 1 watt power in testing but it already makes your pants flap on your legs.

Seeing just the thread title, I assumed this was going to be about somebody who wanted to fornicate with an enclosure port. Have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. ;)

You'd need to have a quite large member to fornicate with the exit port of this one lol.

Send it to data-bass.com and prove it. :)

I have no intention to publish this design. It's not practical due to extremely large size and weight, it's designed to hit 18hz at 120db / box and custom made for a local movie theatre.

The Othorn is not even designed to play below 27hz.

Not so WAF but hey cinema so who cares xD
Nice design and a darn decent rolloff! I prefer cleanliness of IBs (especially for down to 10hz design) but what you have made even I would consider as IB snob..

The horns should sound cleaner than IB due to higher loading. The bass I posted about sounds extremely clean and tight even when playing the bottom pedals of organs (16hz basic frequency). No side noises, just pure body vibrating bass. It sounds pretty much like the real thing (I've heard some large organs in my time).

Having said that I haven't heard a really good IB implementation so I'm biased to horns. Same usually applies to people with IB:s - horns are too bulky and complicated for the average Joe.

Without the high pass filter the horn would play to 15hz -6db and still produce 100+db output at 10hz :)
Well, if the driver would have x-max to cope with it that is. This driver doesn't so it has to be limited.

If I paid double or triple more for the driver this horn would do 10hz no problem.

Here's a video that gives some taste what proper horns can do for you (by the way all that distortion is from the microphone overloading, the bass is just too much for it):

Nice video.

Here's a friend's house with sixteen 18" sealed subwoofers. I was filming. Pretty fun to experience.

A large displacement does wonders. But cheap it isn't.

Nice build! Always wanted to do this in the basement. Just need the other $20K to make it habitable. Currently a bit rough.
