Just confirmed and plugged in the serial numbers to Seagate's site.

Warranty good until:

^ Impressive until they change it midway through the warranty like they seem to have done with some other models. Very hard to put any faith in Seagate and unfortunately they're going to become one of the go-to drives due to current prices and based on Hitachi's supply appearing to dry up. Just baffling that as time's gone on and tech has matured and increased, warranties have decreased. One can only assume corners are being cut somewhere to meet price goals and that means reliability takes a hit enough that the company has less faith in their own products after extensive internal testing.

More time needs to pass before anyone currently standardized on Hitachi drives should consider another brand, unless you simply have to have the storage now. Reason being its still unknown how a transition if any will be carried out by WD, what the scope of it is, etc. No public statements have been made, or likely will be made, all we can do is watch the supply chain and see what comes down. It wouldn't make sense for WD to simply kill off Hitachi's fabs and send everyone home so the question is will the new drives they produce be WD's design/internals/controller/firmware (bleh) or will it be Hitachi drives all the way down to the firmware but with a WD label. In WD's arrogance I'm sure they feel their crap is superior though and thus "everything must use it."

I've never seen that done by a company that didn't go bankrupt, except for Samsung 750GB Spinpoint F1 drives sold by Fry's with a 5-year factory warranty that was shrunk to 3 years.

This is pretty much where I'm at. My 6 TB array is now full. When I built the ZFS server it was on 1TB WD RE4 drives. They've been great. They were cheap and before the flood. The problem is i need more storage now and 1TB ain't going to cut it and the 250+ per drive they are charging per 2TB is just too much.

Unfortunately I didn't by the 5k3000 Hitachis in time. So I'm looking for alternatives. I'm not afraid of advanced format I can config for that no problem. I just need the best bang for buck. Would you or anyone recommend the 7K3000's for a ZFS build? I've reviewed so many I can't make up my mind anymore..lol.
 
Hitachi 7K3000 2TB drives are on sale at Fry's until Thursday, Aug. 9. These are model HDS723020BLA642, part number 0F012155. They are in a retail box with Hitachi part number 0S02861. Fry's is showing them as 32MB buffer, but the boxes on the shelf show 64BM buffer. The Fry's item number is #5947254. I picked up four and they are working fine. Two had FW 800 manufactured in ARP 2012 and two had FW 5C0 manufactured in OCT 2011. I updated these last two to FW 800.

its sad, now with hitachi almost gone and samsung gone, there are no good hard drive manufactures left :( only seagate and WD.

FWIW, two weeks ago I sent in a Hitachi 2TB 7K2000 HDS7220ALA330 in for RMA, today received a Hitachi 2TB 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 as a replacement.

The drive I sent in wasn't even really bad, only had a few bad sectors, I more just sent it in as a test to see what they'd send back in return since at least one person reported getting a WD Green back on a 2TB Hitachi RMA (kill me).

Interesting to note the Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB drive has been quietly available at online retailers for the past 5-6 weeks. And despite the Toshiba sticker apparently they even still show as a Hitachi HDS721010DLE6​30 (Hitachi 7K1000.D) when queried by the controller. However I'm sure this new batch of 1.5TB/2.0TB/3.0TB announced in the press release will ATA-identify as Toshiba.

Given the Toshiba press release yesterday, the significance here - and good news for existing Hitachi owners looking to expand their drive pools - is its more confirmation that these are literally just restickered Hitachi's rather than some new ground-up design based on Hitachi designs/patents.

I hope you're right! But, then, there must be an error in the details/specs in the tables in that press-release. Among the non-7200rpm models, they show the 3TB ones as being 5940rpm, with 2TB and 1.5TB being 5700rpm; however, in the DS5K3000 product line, it (the reality) is the reverse.

Further justification for "Don't make technical decisions based on marketing statements." ???
 
That's trivial and probably erroneous. The key things to remember are #1 they were basically handed a winning formula by adopting a Hitachi plant - why change it. #2 There wasn't enough lead time to design a new drive from the ground up this quickly.
 
Does anyone know what the defaults are for spin up/down times? is there anything in the disk firmware telling it to sleep?

I have a couple of these in my freebsd box (disks set to always on) but the disk still seems to spin up/down and the load cycle count jumping up high (happens when nothing is using the disks well I cant tell whats using them (and why always on isnt always on)) - Other than the load cycle you can hear the head seeking or a little beep when it gets accessed for the first time (head parking)?

Well, given all the drive vendor shuffling lately I wouldn't be surprised to hear someone thinking that.

WD buys HGST but then sells some 3.5 drive lines to Toshiba. Meanwhile WD also buys a Thailand part of Toshiba's drive manufacturing. Just whose name will be on the Deskstar/Ultrastar drives once the WD->Toshiba transition is complete?

Who's on First and all that... Bit shocking how condensed the drive market has become in recent years. Not that I miss the adventures of crappy Micropolis and Maxtor drives... but at least there was diversity in the market.
 
Question for RocketRaid 4320 owners: Have any of you tried using a 2TB 7k3000? Is it compatible?

As some of you may know, Hitachi is shipping 7k3000s in their 7k2000 boxes now, but I already have an array of 7k2000s on my RR4320 that I want to add on to. Can I add these 7k3000s to my existing array of 7k2000s? I've heard from the 3TB 7k3000s are not compatible with the RR4320 but wasn't sure about the 2TB 7k3000s.

It would be nice to get a confirmation from someone in the community before attempting an online expansion and holding my breath.. :)

We have production arrays with both 5k and 7k Hitachi 4TB drives, they are good reliable drives for HW RAID.
 
I have been having fits with one of my 2TB 5K3000's. All drives are connected to 2xM1015 IT mode in OI. Below shows errors on the drive, but I'm not exactly sure what is wrong with the drive. I have taken the drive out and ran DFT and HD Tune on it and it is not reporting errors. So I am not sure what the steps are for true problem determination are.
The drive originally had 580 firmware. I upgraded to 5C0 but that didn't help. Questions and suggestions are welcome.

Anyone know how to check warranty on these?

I went to the hgst support site, and plugged in my serials, but it returns an invalid serial. I also noticed that on the Help me find my Serial # page that none of the 5K3000 models are listed.

Any ideas?

You haven't posted the exact message returned by the warranty check tool, so at this point any response is purely based on assumption.

If the warranty check tool returns no information or returns "invalid serial" it's likely that you entered your serial incorrectly. (it's easy to confuse a zero for an "o", etc). Typically if a warranty is not valid for return through Hitachi RMA you will receive a message along the lines of "return product to manufacturer" (you might see this message with used drives sold by amazon, or drives included in system builds)

It's also possible that you entered incorrect information for the captcha.

I have a Hitachi 500GB portable drive. Bought last year for $69, it now goes for $49. I am looking at a WD 3TB desktop for $129.
If 1TB portables drop to $79, I'll take one.

For my 7K3000/7K2000 drives: I've only gotten that error when making a typo in entering the serial number on the Hitachi website. (Picking the wrong country gives me a "The drive is not valid for warranty through HGST." error. Getting the CAPTCHA wrong also provides a very clear "The security code entered is incorrect" error.)
 
I currently have 16 2TB 7K2 disks and 4x 2tb WD disks.

8x2tb=raid 6 (mainstore)
8x2TB=RAID5 (daily backup of mainstore with retention)
4x2TB WD= starwind san for vmware.

Looking to reduce them to 8 disks by moving to 4TB Hitachi Disks.
 
Before you call people out maybe you should read the post. I clearly stated it returns "invalid serial".

Good luck getting any help with that type of attitude, I could have done a lot more to help, but I'm definitely not going to now. lol
 
Just found a new line of HGST Hatachi nas drives.
Their available for pre-order at b&h video.
Currently 3 and 4tb models with 7200 rpm .
Can't find any other information on them yet.

Interesting, I would be tempted if the price falls a little bit. I've been thinking about building a Toshiba DT01ACA300 ZFS array but I would rather go with Hitachi if there was a reasonably priced offering in production.
 
I'd rather have Hitachi disk to, and would pay a bit more for them.
I've got quite a few of them and their very compatible with the Adaptec
and Lsi cards I have.
I like the Toshiba's to, currently have 6 in raid 10.

This is great news as I thought desktop Hitachi drives were done.
 
From an old EMC SAN i have a bunch of Hitachi 2TB disks with the following specs:

Hitachi HUA722020ALA330 (Ultrastar A7K2000)

MLC JPK34E
EMC PN 118032706
REV A02

I placed 4 of these in a PC with an Asus P5E mainboard. (Intel Raid)
Al seemed wel until i ran Featuretool 2.15 (DOS) and change some cache and powermanagment settings. (SATA IDE mode at that time)

Now when a disk is powered (even without sata data cable) it's making a ratteling noise with a constant interval.
Anyone know what this could be? , does the Featuretool maybe change the wrong things in these types of drives.

I tried firmware updates (JKDL_SP.EXE tool, and firmware files for 3EA and 3MA)
but when i run it (from dos bootable media) i get "Device not found"

Are these disk now ruined ? It gets very hot after even a short while when its rattling on it's own.
