Here's Why Graphics Card Pricing Could Shoot Up In 2020

""Given these developments, demand is expected to exceed supply for graphics DRAM in 2020," Wu says."

wow, too bad NO ONE thought to look forward before GDDR6 was put into the design

the more GPU's you buy the more you save
lol that's like "the more you spend the more you save!" so does that make Jensen to be a plagiarist?

"Graphics Card Pricing Could Shoot Up ..."

it could also shoot down due to slow sales ... just saying

Cool, another year without an upgrade, but yeah I'm feeling alright about that.

The real kick in the nuts is the 1/2 generation old cards still going for original MSRP + some.

personally, I don't believe it ... eBay just tries to make it look that way. Of the GTX 10 series I tracked almost none of them sold after watching them for 4 weeks. It's like the FX-8350 CPU's on eBay ... cheapest Used one currently is $130 :ROFLMAO::sick:

Well I'm speaking of new cards, I trust used cards about as far as I can throw the fat fuck who thought he could make some money mining with it who's selling it. That said, yeah if there was a used card for really cheap I would think about it, but then the thought would end with "why are they selling it for so cheap" which would kill any transaction. EVGA still selling B-stock for 5% off "MSRP", you just can't fucking win. But luckily my last upgrade 4 years ago is still relevant today.

too bad you missed the EVGA sale that ran from Black Friday to Christmas Eve ... twin fan GTX 1660 Ti Ultra for $219 + tax free ship.

I ordered one, than cancelled ... did that a few times because I was unsure if new GPU or new build was best at this time. Finally went with a new build ... glad I did

have a evga 970 ssc and a xfx 5700. i can sit for a long time.
I also use GTX 970 (MSI Gaming 4G) plays great at 1080p so have no current need for anything faster though the power savings and fps jump of a GTX 1660 Ti would be nice but not necessary

Yeah same, while I would LOVE to upgrade to a 2070 Super or something... I'm not paying $500 just for that. Can I do 4k? Yeah not really, but I don't have a 4k monitor so not a big deal to me, plus the upside is I can get a bigger monitor that isn't 4k for much cheaper than a 4k monitor :D

Been using RTX2070 for over a year now, can easily go one more. Been very happy with it. Was easily worth $500.

I'm going to keep holding on to the hope that the rumors of next gen Nvidia cards being cheaper is true and that it's better to wait for all of the games I want to play on it to be out a while and patched up.

Try searching for completed listings instead of just looking at list prices?

Mining doesn't bother me. By the time the load mining puts on a GPU has any impact on the card, it will long be obsolete.

I'm more concerned with kids who don't know shit about shit doing ESD damage to the things before selling them.

I just searched based on sold listings only.

First page of results ranges from $400 at the low end to $800 at the high end with most in the $425 to $500 range.

I think graphic cards will get much cheaper. With the next consoles coming out, Nvidia has more reasons to drop prices than anyone else, which would force AMD to drop prices as well. Both AMD and Nvidia have poor sales as is, so high prices would just hurt sales even further. Then you have Intel who plans to release a GPU next year as well, which would also lower prices. I believe 2020 will be a great year to buy a graphics card.

One thing the inflation adjust cost doesn't show though is the price of GPUs when the next one came out. I live by the mantra of "Current generation minus one" and have been since I started with PCs, but it seems that retailers are not making much effort to lower pricing on older generations of cards, hell just using Newegg as a reference (I know probably poor) the 970 I last bought is still going for more than I paid for mine new. Now sure the used market you can get good deals, but I really feel like these older new cards should be much cheaper than what they are.

Also a near 100% jump off your average for the latest card seems not to follow a trend too much :)

you should do one with AMD cards.
I'm not as familiar with AMD GPU history.

If you want to compile the top end ATI/AMD GPU's from each geberation and their launch month and year, I'll happily put together the CPI-U inflation bit.

here's what I'm guessing will happen in 2020 ...

- Console with 2080 will come out and be priced $500 but sell for $600

- GPU prices will then nose dive because folks will be switching to consoles
because the GPU difference between console and PC was made to be zilch
and Consoles have better current games and ZERO hardware setup problems

- Nvidia is charging way high prices for 20 series as are stores (as well as for
old stock 10 series) because they know what's coming in 2020 (what I just
mentioned above) so they are trying to recoup all the $$$ they can that they
laid out for stock but after consoles come out 20 series prices will drop

- at that time used 10 series card prices on eBay will take a nose dive especially
since there will be an over supply of 10 series mining cards there. I'm guessing
a GTX 1070 will sell for about $120 by then

there are a shit load of red herrings though

the 5870 was over msrp because of mining same as 7000 series same as 290x series and rx480 cards.

You can always get a 1070, still excellent cards and can find one on the forums here for a good price.
Yeah I can. But that costs money and my 970 is still doing me well. My monitor is old, so I'm playing at 1920x1200.

Plus I have this long standing tradition where I push my hardware as hard as possible and only replace once it outright can't play something or runs like such ass it's completely unplayable. I'm a long way from that.

maybe once in a while here and there someone posts a gaming GPU or CPU for a "good" price here but usually it's the same pricing as eBay for those two items likely because those selling on eBay also sell here and they choose to not pass along or split the 10% fee they don't have to pay at [H] ;)

That sounds kinda like a shitty tradition. But if you stick with 1080p 60hz monitor you probably will be fine for a while longer.

Lot more than "once in a while" imo but to each their own I guess.

This stuff that hasn't launched yet is probably going to be more expensive... you should just buy the stuff that's expensive now, so that you don't have to later. Don't worry...we'll make sure the price never drops on the old stuff. :D

Oh I agree it's a completely shitty tradition. It mostly comes from the fact that I grew up with very little money so I had to make do with what I had and save up in the meantime. I went to college in 2002 with a voodoo 3 2000. Was only because I overclocked it to the brink of destruction that I was able to keep using it. If you were to touch it while under load it would reward you with a mild burn.

Old habits are hard to break I guess.

Oh, and as a reminder from that story I wrote for the [H] last year...

Numbers are a little outdated, as there has been continued inflation since then, but it is still pretty close.

I'm not going to go through the whole chart, but the 2080 launched at $799, not $700.

The 2080 Super (released almost a year later) was $699, though the chart seems to be tracking launch prices, not mid-cycle refreshes or price drops.
