I am quite new to networking setups and although have used an esx server for quite a while for various testing have never really had everything set up in a good manner.
My current hardware setup can be seen below, what I'm just wanting to know is if I'm able to achieve the following configuration:
Firstly:
I have two internet connections, one cable internet, one ADSL internet
The ADSL internet connection belongs to the person inside a house, I rent their sleepout and there is one ethernet cable running between the house and the sleepout.
the Cable modem is also housed inside the house. The ethernet cable runs between the 24 port switch (inside the house) to the Netgear 8 Port switch (inside the sleepout).
In an ideal situation, I would like my ESXi server to run the following VMs:
M1015 with 2 x 250GB drives running the following:
PFSense with Squid
OpenIndiana with 1 x IBM M1015 passed through running 2 x 1TB drives and 3 x 2TB drives
The 3 x 2TB drives will be used as my file server, and the 2 x 1TB will be used for NFS storage for the ESXi box, running the following:
SQL Server
Domain Controller
Web Server
Download Server which downloads to the 3x2TB file server
Couple of other VMs for testing
PFSense with Squid - is this possible after the ADSL connection has already been through a router and then fed into the esxi box? I would want all VMs inside using the ADSL connection only.
I have minimal control of the ADSL Router inside the house, DHCP needs to be enabled on this for the owner, and my setup cannot impact his uptime in any way.
Desktop PC - this would use the cable internet connection, with the 2nd NIC used for management of the ESXi server and management of all the VMs via RDP/web management for openindiana. It would also require access to the 3 x 2TB storage.
Wireless access required from the WRT54GL for my netbook and iphone.
I guess my main question is, is all of this achievable with my current hardware setup? Any advice appreciated/changes I would need to make would be great. Thanks
