Help me pick up a low end gaming desktop for my son

My son is now 11 and PC games like I used to back in the late 90's early 2000. He mostly plays minecraft and the cheapo laptop I got him lags like crazy.

I haven't built a computer in probably 15 years. Can you all recommend something in the 400 - 500 dollar range, even if it is a build, that will at least last him a couple of years.
