I have been looking through the Router sticky trying to find a new router because of the disconnect errors I have been getting with the PSN. It may be Sony's problem but if a new router works, well it works. The error is I am playing for a few minutes, maybe 10-15 tops, then I lose connection to the Playstation Network. I can sign back on in immediately, download speeds are fine. Here is the troubleshooting thread if you want to take a look.

The error code is 8002ad23. I want the networking specialists to help diagnose the TYPE of problem so I understand what networking issue is occuring better. The gamers might know of a solution, from what I gather, Sony nor Linksys doens't.

But in any case I am using an old Linksys BES41 v2 wired router. The speed is fine, configuring the thing is annoying and maybe it is time for a new one. I have already run ethernet cables so it doesn't have to be wireless...I am a little stubborn in my willingness to convert...it just seems to me like I am going to pay more money for less speed. Tell me I am wrong. (And driveby hackers can find me!)

So, help me choose a new router, or help me fix this problem....

EDIT - The firmware was updated two years ago. It is probably okay now, because the newest drivers were made in 2004! (Unless resetting deletes firmware, I'll check that out and see)

Have you tried flashing to the latest firmware for the router and reconfiguring? As far as a new router goes, I have to recommend the Dlink DIR-655.

Sounds like you're at the end of that router's life.

Just about anything from the list will do but I'd recommend the DIR-655 or the DIR-625 if the 655 is a little out of your price range.

I'm afraid to make the wireless jump. Tell me that I am old-fashioned and stubborn. I can't get past thinking wireless is slower than wired...

(I would need to get a wireless card for my PC or would using wired connection be good too)

Just because the router has wireless capabilities, you don't need to use them. Most of the time you can turn off the wireless features and only use the integrated wired switch. Or just lock down the wireless capabilities and use it if you ever get a laptop or something. Just about every consumer grade wireless router has a wired switch in it; for instance the DIR-655 has a four-port gigabit switch in it as well as advanced wireless offerings.

I always go wired - whenever possible. :) Wireless is nice for surfing on the couch with your laptop... but always go wired for gaming/media if possible.

Have you tried hooking your PS3 right into your DSL / Modem? If you still get disconnects from there you can narrow it down to a faulty modem or ISP. I had simliar issues with Comcast until they fixed the cable in my neighborhood.

Gaming on Wi-Fi = bad.
Not just because of the INCREASED lantency, but because of the hick-jups and re-authentication taking places.
