I've emailed EA's ""experts"" on Friday and I chased it again yesterday with more details of the problem, yet still no response.

I am getting the error "We're sorry an error has occurred, There is a problem with your games setup. Please reinstall the game." when I try to run the game. There is little/none disk activity when I go to run it (via origin or 'directly'), just a 3 second pause then the error.

System specs: windows server 2008 r2 x64 Std, [email protected] (dead stable), 16gigs ram, 240gig ssd (40gb free), gtx460 with latest drivers (285.62).

I tried to install from dvd(s) first, which also downloaded patches as it went, no avail.

Uninstalled the game, downloaded the latest version of origin and downloaded it from the web, tried to run with firewall off run as admin etc.

Yesterday I Uninstalled both the game and origin, deleted any registry entries to either and the folders 'origin' and 'origin games' in program files (x86) as well as 'origin' in in programdata. I then downloaded a new copy of origin from the website and proceeded to download the game again, still no joy.

TL:TR, I don't like the double slashes in lines #2167 & 2168, how do I change this?

Also, I tried to run #2161 in cmd directly (as admin), no change

I have the exact same issue with my Windows Server 2008 R2 build, but it works fine in Windows 7.

There has to be a permission issue or something related to Windows Server, since it is the same kernal as Windows 7, but I know Server is more locked down by default.

I still haven't figured out why or what setting, but I'm right there with you.

They've clearly not tested on Windows Server 2008

Scoobydo is right, windows server is more locked down, specifically the web side of things, if they're doing proxy requests through to the web in order to activate or whatever then the web security might be stopping that, I'd disable the software firewall temporarily and probably look in to Internet Explorers enhanced security (and how to disable that)

More generally I'd advise not gaming on a server OS, while it's similar to Win7 you'll still have issues like this with other software/games not designed specifically for it.

Thanks guys/ girl.

IE is set about as lax as it can go (does it call IE specifically or just default browser?) and I've tried using windows7 compatibility mode/ as admin for the executables I believe it uses. I just wish it would throw an exception at me, something I can work with. :(

How does the game work exactly. They're not using IE to lunch the game are they? I can't imaging even W7 ever being happy with that. I don't see why the game can't just consume a web service!

Unfortunately I need to use the server edition for my day job and windows7/ virtual pc isn't an option. I guess I'll leave it until March.. 7950's should be out, Ivybridge i7's (hopefully) out and fibre to the premisses is in my area! (that's going to be a hell of a month for me)

How about a dual boot/win7 partition? Keep that for gaming/personal and everything else for work.

Booting up takes too long!
Yeah that would be the best bet, but there's a vm on my machine that kicks off a load of stuff for a client (the rest are just used for testing). In all truth it doesn't need to be hosted here any longer. It's worked fine until now, simple to backup and maintain.

Actually, I think I'll just move the server stuff, vm's to a dedicated machine. This looks pretty cool (can fit a socket 1155, 16gigs of ram and 6 drives in there!) + silent!

I knew I should have brought bf3 on the xbox!!!

I believe I have a handle on whats going on and why its failing. Not sure of a solution yet.

From what it appears, Bf3.exe is 49 megs. It is encrypted, with an extra program embedded into the .exe. When you first launch the game, it creates/copies the "release date check" program to the temporary folder. When it contacts EA, it tries to modify the Bf3.exe and decrypt it and remove itself from the .exe.

I believe Windows wants to kick its ass for doing this as it looks very "virus" like, so the decryption process fails, and Origin can't launch bf3.exe (decrypted) and gives the installation error message.

I'm going to try to create a user account that does not have admin rights to see if this will make Windows Server 2008 less picky.

You maybe onto something and you may want to take a look at DEP and this guide to turn it off.

Careful with BCDedit, it's not a toy. :)

I'm going to try and install it on a windows7 laptop tomorrow and copy the installation across after.

Well for starters BF3 installs web plugins to launch BF3 from when connecting to servers and alike, you might be better off installing something like Chrome of Firefox and setting that to the default browser, and then installing the plugins for that.

I tend to avoid changing the IE settings in our live server environments because I'm never 100% sure what knock on security effects that has, I tend to install a 2nd browser and use that for any direct web access I need.
