Ok, first let me say.. i will kiss the feet of whoever can help me solve this because im tearing my hair out and its driving me nuts.

First my setup
running a E6300 @ 3.2 and some change (466fsb)
using 2x1gb sticks of gskill pc800 memory
gigabyte 965p S3 board on F8 bios
evga 8800gtx
vista 64

Now my problem
when she's running right, I get around 10500 in 3dmark 06 and around 50fps on max in the mmo im currently playing (vanguard)
however, whenever it feels like it "it seems like" out of nowhere my 3dmarks can run @ 17000 in 05 then the next test they drop to 7000!! or in the game for example, i was playing for awhile today, and out of nowhere i started lagging, restarted and the game was running @ 30fps tops.. averaging like 15fps and not only that but it seems like its running slow mo.

Any ideas/suggestions? Ive ran a stress test overnight on the cpu and the memory at 475fsb and they checked out, however backed off at 466 its doing it!

After a random amount of restarts, when it feels like it. it'll go back to normal. I can tell when i start the game by the login screen and the speed of the flames whether my framerate is gonna be good, or suck in game.

Ive tried everything just about, at a loss. is it heat, is it voltage, is it neither? vista drivers?

i have a thread going on anandtech too with no such luck so far

I know on the Asus P5B sometimes the PCI-E bus will drop from x16 down to x1 mode and 3D performance will go into the toilet. See what CPU-z reports when frame rates are down. If not that then it's well known that the Nvidia Vista drivers have a few issues at the moment.

Enjoy being a guinea pig for bad software. :(

Yeah, Check the PCIe bus width in CPUz (2nd or 3rd tab I think) and make sure it's reporting 16x

Also, try uninstalling the drivers, and cleaning anything nVidia from your comp with Driver Cleaner Pro (there's a free version somewhere... assuming it works with Vista) and reinstalling the drivers.

Can check on the x1 mode, however during like cpu tests in 3dmark (when its running bad) i get like 1-2fps when its running well, i get 7-8fps. Wouldnt that point to it being a cpu issue and nothing to do with the pcie bus?

Also driver wise.. the only drivers that have ever been installed were the newest nvidia ones for the 8800 and vista.

20 bucks paypal'd to whomever fixes this for me. killing me only being able to game when my pc wants me to. I can literally turn the settings down to minimum and get 20fps in slowmotion. Doesnt make much sense on a 3gig core 2 and an 8800gtx vista or not >.<

=(

is that 3damrk06?no cpu can get 7-8 fps on the cpu tests, even QX6700 scrapes 2FPS.

this does sound like a vista problem if its not the PCIE bus dropping.

just do an install of windows XP on different partiton and see if you get the same problem?

it could be the cpu though I would doubt it very much. but just to be sure make sure all power saving settings on the cpu are turned off in BIOS.

as far as I know its a known issue with 3dmark scores dropping after the first run in vista, saw a thread over at XS on that. but dont remember it being such a large drop.

no im talkin about 3dmark 05 so yea i get like 7-8 fps on the cpu tests =) and yea all the technology (so called) settings are off in the bios. I can install vista on a different partition.. it possible to make a partition on a raid after the array is already formed? and its not only in 3dmark though, my game only works at 25% fps at times too >.<

hmm someone on xtremeoverclockers says if the cpu scores are taking a hit as well, then it has to be the cpu. I tested the pcie bus and its x16 when its doing its slowdown "thing"

any other ideas/suggestions/help?

Remove this faulty component and replace with something reliable and retest.

vista 64

Not kidding.

HA, ok guys... first let me thank everyone for help so far. very kick ass.

However i just alt tabbed out and caught it in CPU-Z. Link Width is x1 Max x16

now the trick is why in the hell is it running @ x1 pretty much whenever it feels like running in it?

Edit (again) here is the best info I can find on your issue, scroll down about halfway into the post, basically it is a known issue and messing with your PCI buss frequency might help.

--------- old info on general 8800 issues with vista ------------

It could be worse. Not sure if its a motherboard or driver issue but you are on the bleeding edge with the 8800 and Vista so its gonna be messy for a bit.

oh trust me, i know of the crazy issues lol. I found mine though, my performance is getting killed because its changing to x1 instead of x16 sometimes. (still doesnt explain the cpu test loss in 3dmark i think??) but its my first shot at fixing it if anyone can tell me what or where i need to change to keep it running x16 =(

This is a known bug that I thought only effected the Asus boards but it's nice to see that it also screws up Gigabyte boards as well. Maybe a lawyer in the crowd will volunteer for a nice big class action lawsuit for companies that release buggy hardware and software.

Since this problem is on two different boards about the only thing in common is the Intel 965 chipset.

There does not seem to be any single solution that works for everyone.

My first suggestion would be to up the northbridge voltage a notch or two and see if that helps. You might need to add a small fan to that big, ugly Gigabyte heatsink.

Some users like to adjust the PCI-e bus speed from 100 to 101 or even up to 120 which I personally disagree with but whatever works for you.

I've also set the link width to fastest in the bios.

The latest bios and a combination of fixes has mostly fixed this problem on my board but I'm not 100% sure that it has totally eliminated it. Let us know if anything works for you.

all i can say is goo d luck, have you ever read the terms of service for sony major software title? let alone for vista- the more i read about it the less i want to upgrade (for reasons other then the many many software bugs)

http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/175801
under the new terms of service microsoft reserves the right to scan and/or auto-remove any software, be it useful or harmful, that they see fit to classify as a 'security threat'; to scan and log all hardware and other 'critical system information' without user permission.

For greater certainty, the terms and conditions remove any doubt about who is in control by providing that "this agreement only gives you some rights to use the software. Microsoft reserves all other rights." For those users frustrated by the software's limitations, Microsoft cautions that "you may not work around any technical limitations in the software."

remember to read what you are clicking OK to.

basicly if microsoft came to your house and intentionaly broke your arm, they will be held harmless in the eye of the law, and probably would sue you for their court costs (150 lawyers @ $5000/hour for 2 months, you can do the math)

damn spent hours researching and you didnt bother to read /sigh

go into your bios and take the pci buss speed off of auto and set it like unclewebb said. I too agree that 120 is too much and I dont go over 110.

hit ctrl + F1 keys while in main bios screen to get the advanced MIT settings. There is where the MCH voltages can be set.

"didnt bother to read"

your not referring to me are you? cause for the record you dont need to ctrl F1 for mch(northbridge voltage) that just gives ya memory timing(s) access. Ive already tried northbridge voltage up a little bit, and even up to max. Also tried a 105 pcie with no luck.

I just ended up back in xp now so we'll see what happens as far as the bus freaking out issue. Hopefully it doesnt, granted that still doesnt make me hope for a fix for vista, especially considering the dx10 demo just came out!

will post back if the problem is gone =p

for the record. The issue is gone. I'm currently in windows @ 500fsb too. Not sure if i feel safe keeping it running @ that speed though =p
