Hi,

I deleted my iChat (by mistake, mind you... I command-dragged it to the desktop, then deleted it, cause I thought it was a shortcut!!) <-- idiot!

I have the software restore dvd's that came with my powerbook (12", 1.0 ghz, 256 ram, etc...), but it won't let me reinstall iChat unless I do a full hard-drive install of OSX! I don't want to lose all my stuff, and definitely don't want to reformat for just that program, but it's SO integrated in my daily life that I MUST have it back!! Is there a way to just download it from somewhere? I checked versiontracker.com and apple downloads, but they only have the upgrades to iChat, not the program itself (I guess cause it's part of the whole OSX system...)

SO, is there ANY way for me to get it back??

Thanks in advance!

well you can try doing this....put the restore DVD in the comp and from Finder select the Go menu and select Go to Folder and put in /Volumes/PowerBook G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages then click the OK button...this should open a finder window and show the install packages on this comp....if that doesn't work don't worry..just do an Archive Install Preserving User and Network Settings and that will reload the OS and all our apps but leave your stuff alone..you would have to update all your sw but it is not a total loss here

I tried the first method of go--> /volumes/powerbook software/etc... and the cd doesn't have a package for iChat! Shouldn't it have an installation package for iChat??

Just a thought: If I get a friend to send me their copy of iChat, will it work on my comp? Or is each copy hardlined onto their own corresponding computers? To clarify: I'm not advocating piracy, just wondering if that would work.

it MIGHT work but who knows...if they have iChat then you could just load off their disk...or just do the Archive Install preserving user settings and you would be fine

Thank you! I'll go try that and hope it works :D

now, this might be the dumbest question you've heard, but I'm a mac newbie (hence the whole command-drag, then delete, then crap in pants now that I've permanently deleted a program...), but here goes: what exactly IS archive install, and how does it work??

Thanks again for your wise help!!

when you install os x, there should be an option to "archive and install", it basically reinstalls os x, yet keeps all of your old files...

Thanks, projectj for clarifying the archiving bit. I thought reinstalling the os meant deleting everything (but I guess I forgot that is isn't Windows installation!!)

and THANK YOU addragyn, for the link! Can;t wait to go home and try out if pacifist will do what I think it will do!!!

Thanks, all!!
