Help appreciated

A friend of mine has a switch with the internet going into it(the switch is a D-Link DSS-5+). Off of that he has a router(Netgear ).
His family has several computers that are all on the router, he wants his on the switch instead. Well he says that when he hooks his up to the switch, that his computer is the only one that works, and the ones on the router no longer work. any ways to make this work?

Why does he have the internet going into the switch first? It should be like this: Internet>Router>computers. And if you need more ports than the router has, you plug the switch into one of the router's ports and then you can plug extra computers into that. The way he has it now is backwards.

Connect the the modem to the router then the switch to the uplink port on the router. Just remember that by using the uplink, the last port on the router (probably 4 or 5) will not be useable.

I think what the person spoken about in this thread wants to do is have is own IP and thus direct connection to the internet.

To do this however he will have to be given an extra IP by his ISP and will most likely have to pay for it. Also his bandwidth will still be shared.

the reason why your other machines can't connect while connected to the router and you into the switch:

your ISP is allotting you ONE ip address. your machine grabs it, leaving the router without one.

if you connect the switch on the private side of the router, the router will provide functions necessary to move traffic between your network and the public internet, while only using 1 public IP address.
