Head scratching win update issue

Ok, so I mostly run linux at my place with the major exception being my gaming desktop. I recently loaded windows 7 onto a spare laptop for a friend and in the process was met with an error code of 8024402F when trying to update windows. This was for home premium though I don't think that matters. Initially I thought "ok glitch/bug/whatever", try to fix it to no avail and head out. Later on at a friends place I see the updates start downloading and upon further inspection I found that my desktop had not installed updates since January.

So, what can I make of this? I haven't tried any other machines on my home network yet, but I can't get updates to start going. Has anyone run across anything like this before? Any input?
 
start button , control panel , windows update , check for updates

but I'm sure You already tried that, but as a linux user...well...you might overlook that part
 
That's what throws the error code. Same code on both machines.
 
Services.msc, stop the Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer service, delete everything in c:\windows\software distribution, restart the services and try again. This has often fixed many of the issues that I have worked on before.

Also, you might need to install SP1 manually first if that has not been done. (It might help but I am not certain of that.)
 
SP1 is installed and those fixes have done nothing. Opening the update log I find this

Looks like it's failing to talk out to me.

Edit:
I updated my router firmware (ddwrt june 2012 to march 2013 release) and everything works.
