HDMI President's tweet confirms HDMI 2.1:
file.php

Probably gonna be revealed in CES 2017. Here's to hoping for a much needed bandwidth increase!

Well that's good. HDMI 2.0 seemed to be a half baked solution, since it's not really a more future proof solution. (Not enough bandwidth)

I have a feeling all 2.1 will add is a half-baked solution for 8K while still being inferior to the always forward-looking DisplayPort spec.

HDMI 2.1 will have 48Gbps bandwidth, allowing 8k 60hz and 4k 120hz. It will also support dynamic meta data for HDR-10.

The new specs requires a new HDMI 2.1-certified cable. Your old High-Speed HDMI cables will not work.

It looks like there's finally a reason to jump into 4k TVs without begging for a damn Displayport.

For comparison:
HDMI 2.0: 18Gbps
HDMI 2.1: 48Gbps
Displayport 1.4: 32.4Gbps.

That's how bad the old HDMI 2.0 is. 2.1 not only brings it up to modern standards but actually surpassing even the latest Displayport 1.4!

HDMI 2.1 isn't "real" anything. Until displays have HDMI 2.1 chips in them, nothing is real.

Look at Displayport 1.3. "Launched" two and a half YEARS ago and there is not a single display on the planet that has it.

Sadly it seems these days its all marketing fluff driven by companies wanting to sell some new shit with a higher spec on the box.

HDMI2.0 was touted as the holy grail by many here, when it couldn't even do 10BPC 4K60 while Dp 1.2 could. Glad I skipped that BS. It would be great to see active sync support though if they have got HDMI to a level worth considering.

Fuck the hdmi cartel, displayport shows up on gpus and useful monitors first. Years after DP 1.2 was out, hdmi 2.0 barely showed up and most of the devices with hdmi still fuck things up like 4:4:4 etc.

You'll be able to buy a DP 1.4 monitor this year, hdmi 2.1 lolnope

That's a good question. They release 2.1 but when will panel manufacturers actually use/install it? Could be a whole year or more away.
