Having major problems with ATI HD6850

Went to ATI and got the most recent drivers. Computer freezes for a second and displays "Your display driver has stopped responding and has recovered". Sometimes it doesn't come back at all and I have to do a hard reset.

I've tried the Windows Drivers, I've tried the previous 5 older drivers, nothing seems to keep this from happening.

Every time I installed the drivers I uninstalled the previous ones, restarted, then reinstalled.

Here is my setup:

MB: Biostar A770E3
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 840
Video: XFX HD685XZNFC Radeon HD 6850
Memory: Patriot G Series ‘Sector 5’ Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB)

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide. This is driving me crazy!

Still can't figure out what's going on. Trying to play Stalker, TF2, Portal 2, and they all keep crashing because of the driver.

Could it be a hardware issue? I'll run it through Memtest and prime95 when I get home tonight
 
r u oc'ing the vid card? I got that msg when i oc'd my vid card too high even though it passed stability tests it would pop up.

Firstly, go to your device manager, find the display adapter listing for your card, click on it, go to the "driver" tab, and use the bottom radio button to uninstall your drivers there. It WILL bork up your display (icons may double, you'll be at godawful resolution, etc), but it's natural for that to happen.

When your drivers are uninstalled, BEFORE you reboot, also run that program. Run it twice to be sure. Make sure that you select "ATI drivers" in the menu, then click "Analyze," then "Clean/Sweep/Whatevercommandisheretoexecute."

Then reboot, cold boot preferably, ie total shutdown, wait 5 seconds, power on (clears laggy ram and capacitors). Boot up, install your drivers, reboot.

This has solved 80% of driver issues with ATI cards (and some nVidia cards) that I know of. The other 20% mostly deals with registry values and, in absolute worst case scenarios, hardware issues or a complete Windows reinstall.
 
I am running a 650W PSU. It's some Rosewill Greenpower from Newegg. Don't have the exact model here.

No, I am not OC'ing anything

I will try the driver sweeper when I get home. I also figured out how to stop Windows from automatically installing drivers, which is very annoying. It always installs the windows drivers before I can install the ATI ones.
 
My guess is a hardware problem. Either bad card or insufficient power (rosewill psus arent that great). At least when I have expierenced that problem it was because of hardware.
 
The 650 should be fine, provided it can put out nearly as much as its rated for. It could be your ram, are the values set correctly in the bios?
 
Rosewill is a Newegg brand. Yes, they aren't top of the line, but nothing I buy is. I've had the PSU for a while, running my previous card (5770) with no issues. Like I said I ran MEMTEST86 and no memory issues reported. I have 3 other sets I could test though. I will first check that the values are set correctly in the Bios, though I am pretty sure the stock settings are fine.

First I will try the driver thing then try swapping out hardware. Grr, this is such a pain. Every 3rd computer or so I build always has an issue like this that ends up being something trivial. My favorite one was when the power cord was bad and causing artifacts on my screen.
 
My guess is also that the PSU is going bad. The last time I had a PSU die on me, it affected the graphics card at first.
 
PSU is a few months old, but it could be. I have another high powered one that I could put in there. I'll add that to the list.
 
So I just got this error for the first time tonight since I bought my 6850 in november and it was caused by flash. I tried to play a video on youtube and got the driver has stopped responding error, I clicked play again and got a bsod. I don't know if you had anything flash going at the time but try turning off hardware acceleration of flash and see if that helps.
 
If you google AMD driver has stopped responding, you will see that it is a fairly common error with no standard solution.

The one i have seen as most useful refers it to a problem with the powerplay settings in the bios of the cards, and recommends to make a profile of MSI afterburner that disregards powerplay, google it and see if it works. (for long term it recommends to edit the bios).


The other possible cause that i have seen thrown around refers to some small problems with the system ram.


Honestly though, noone seems to have a foolproof fix to that issue from what i have seen.

Cool! Thanks for the replies! I appreciate all the help.

I went ahead and uninstalled the driver and used driver sweeper. I then disabled Windows from automatically installing their own drivers, restarted, reinstalled the most recent drivers and things seem to have been working pretty good.

I played Portal 2 last night for a few hours without a hitch. Stalker still won't play, but that's probably because I messed with the ini files. I'll reinstall that tonight to see if that gets it to play.
