work environment pc's here:

with our win7 systems we'd build the master image, take a backup of it and throw it on an external hd. we created a boot disc from that machine and would use that to boot the new ones up. we'd go through the options and find the image we had just created on the ext. hd and image it.

it doesn't seem to be as cut and dry in win10. i do everything the same except when booted from the disc it doesn't find the ext. hd.

i'm by no means a win10 expert, so am i missing something?

I'd suggest learning how to use Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) and Windows Deployment Services (WDS). This is Microsoft's recommended enterprise imaging solution. You can use custom images with preinstalled software or add scripts to do automated fresh installs of software. You can customize everything in there, and you should be using group policies for most of the security customizations. I set this up at my old job with a 1 gigabit ethernet switch. Imaging took like 15-30 minutes depending on the laptop. Should be faster if you can get 10 gigabit ethernet setup.

Here's a basic guide. It probably will take a few weeks to get everything up and running, but once it's going, imaging is super easy. You just boot to the Windows PE environment, name it (you can also use auto-naming) and hit start. Supports bitlocker too.

thanks guys. we're just getting big enough where we've talked about doing something like MDT. but until then we're stuck the old fashioned way! i think i got it figured out for the time being though.

post your solution for others. ive used aomei backupper to do several different systems/images without issue. there really isn't anything that should stop imaging from seeing an external hdd except maybe usb 3 not supporting, maybe.

You should talk to an MS licensing specialist. You CANNOT use a regular windows desktop license to create an image and deploy to multiple machines, even if they have their own windows license. I believe in order to create/deploy system images you have to have at least 1 volume license. It's been a while since I had to deal with windows licensing, which is good because it's a cluster fuck.
