have you gotten your new NVidia/AMD upgrade card yet? Why not?

The latest status updates we are getting at VM is that supply should begin to ease over the next couple of months. We are currently in stock of all of the 30xx cards at the moment, but they are only available for full systems right now because we're barely getting what we need. Keep the faith, and I expect you will see availability for retail cards to improve by October with prices getting back to MSRP. Hang it there, because they really are worth the wait!
 
I managed to get a 3070 from Bestbuy early in the year. I'm still trying to get a 3080/ti at non-prescalped prices. At some point I'll probably give up on that; but even if the 30xx supply situation improves massively in the interim and everyone who wants a card is able to get one I'm sitll expecting the aftermath of the past year to be reflected in the 40xx/7xxx series launches being another dumpster fire.
 
I would say it will be better because not everyone that got a 3080 will be willing to pay the price tag+ for a 4080
 
I got one back in November when they were still MRSP for the most part.
 
Yes, but was not the one I wanted. Wanted a 3080 FE for $699. Ended up with a Zotac 3070 for $650.

Could have been worse. Can at least say I stayed under budget.

I got: 5x 3080s and 5x 3090s (returned 2 of them though). Mixture of Founders Edition, MSI Gaming X Trio, ASUS TUF and EVGA XC3/FTW3 cards.

Got them from either Best Buy, Newegg, Amazon or EVGA from Sep 2020 to Mar 2021. Most went to family, friends, and friends of friends. I kept a 3090 XC3 and then sold it to upgrade to my current 3090 FTW3 HydroCopper.

I honestly didn’t have that much trouble getting cards as others seemed to have. No bots, just paid attention to Discord notifications on my phone, identified drop patterns, used ApplePay where I could, and overall was lucky.

What are these updates saying?
 
Before I get a new GPU I would like to get a new 48" C1, but before I get a C1 I need a bigger desk, but before I get a bigger desk I need a bigger office, but before I get a bigger office I need a bigger house, but before I get a bigger house my wife wants another kid. Soooo I'm looking at the RDNA4 / RTX 5000 series, my 1080ti is going to need to hold on for dear life.

I am waiting for a card at MSRP and not a penny more. If I have to skip this generation I will.

I hear you. So I did some searching on the timing for the release of the next-gen GPUs from both companies. Mid- to late-2022, assuming no big problems. Pricing, who knows? Problem is I could say that about the market today. And I'm afraid that if just one AIB manufacturer makes these scalper prices permanent, there is every incentive for the rest to follow. Raise the price enough, and demand will drop accordingly. That's one way to eliminate "shortages."

I am worried that the buying frenzy from the "I will pay anything" crowd will push up the MSRP on the next generation. Slower than normal sales of the 2000 series got us a $699 3080 FE. Now that Nvidia knows people will pay 2 or 3 times that for the 3080 FE you can bet that there will be no $699 4080 FE.

We will never see twice the performance from generation to generation ever again.
 
Had no trouble getting a 3070 at RRP at launch, used it for 5 months before selling it to somebody and made $200 extra due to price inflation and shortages, and now have a 6900 XT which I'm quite happy with. Neither card was hard to acquire and had an abundance of stock available at the time of purchase.
 
I am thinking twice now about looking for a 3070 / 6800 XT and just waiting for the next generation :LOL:

The "I will pay anything" crowd have already showed that frenzy to the powers that be. Nvidia is absolutely kicking themselves for having a 3080 with the 102 chip at $699, hence the $1200 3080 Ti. Nvidia laughing all the way to the bank meanwhile saying "these are the same people who complained about Turing?"

I have a good memory and I remember wild claims of performance that either never happened or were very exaggerated in the past. Examples "Navi is an overclocker's dream", "2080 Ti is twice as fast as the 1080 Ti" In addition increasing things like CUDA cores and shaders do not scale 1 to 1 with performance and metrics like Tflops and Timespy do not accurately predict gaming performance which is all I care about.

If you care to link some of his videos that previously had accurate predictions I will watch them.

I do, there were some rumors of that. I just googled and came with Nvidia saying that out of an article, actually. You know, it's always possible to twist and shape things by adjusting settings to an unrealistic scenario lol.

I googled it as well just now and that is what click bait headline says but actual article says "in some games AND using DLSS."
 
We'll know next gen when it arrives. It all depends on what you have. For me, Turing wasn't interesting coming from Pascal, but if you were on Maxwell, it might have been. Still have a 2080TI, mind you, but still.
 
Looking back at the poster's original question: Something that I have also kept in mind is, how much do I actually game? In the past, it was more frequent, but now that I have a family, I game once a week or every other week, so my return of investment is lower then others. If I was gaming every day, I might have considered getting the latest and greatest card. Before I got my 1070 GTX from here(Thank you Pututu), I was using a nvidia 730 1 GB card. It was a little rough, but I was able to do 50 FPS on elder scrolls on medium settings.

My 980Ti isnt going anywhere anytime soon, I dont plan on buying a new card ever again, at least not until MSRP returns to its actual price of ~$500 for the high end card. Graphics cards dont cost $1500+............thats a mortgage payment.

LOL! With a family, you do a whole lot less of things not related to the kids and the spouse. Been there, done that. And they the kids become teenagers, and you rise to a whole new level of stress and anxiety.

as for the mortgage payment…. Depends on where you live. I haven’t seen that since…. 2012?
 
When I can find one available from a reputable source for within +/- 5% of MSRP, I will buy one. Until then, they may as well not exist. Unobtanium, paper, vapour, or smoke, is all it is until that day. The way it's going, I may as well wait until next generation.
