It looks like the folks over at Wired got a little hands-on time with Microsoft’s holographic goggles.

Kipman’s prototype is amazing. It amplifies the special powers that Kinect introduced, using a small fraction of the energy. The depth camera has a field of vision that spans 120 by 120 degrees—far more than the original Kinect—so it can sense what your hands are doing even when they are nearly outstretched. Sensors flood the device with terabytes of data every second, all managed with an onboard CPU, GPU and first-of-its-kind HPU (holographic processing unit).

Looks pretty cool actually. I like the AR Minecraft mockup for it.

It's still not the holodeck we've been asking for since Star Trek NG...

However, I am sure RedTube fans will love these... Hope they are liquid resistant.

Even though it is pretty gimmicky, I would still love to try one out. They are kind of what I hoped Google Glass would be.

I agree it still looks a bit gimmicky, but it seems Microsoft is trying to establish real-world, practical applications for the technology. That's where Google fell tremendously short in my opinion. It needs to give us a better way to do or experience something, and not just be an alternative. Time will tell.

Depending on how this goes, could potentially allow for living room paintball. That is exciting.

Has there been any feedback from the people demoing it today at the event? This shit looks amazing.

I have only seen the Wired article. I am sure they will have impressions up soon.

Holy shit. I want this, now. Looks like the real AR/VR race is on, and I can't freaking wait. Battlefield 10 piped straight to my eyeballs...inb4 research studies into the increase in obesity rates linked to the release of feasible AR/VR devices. ;)

Although TBH, I would totally drive out to the woods somewhere and play an AR fantasy game. ;)

Let me see if I'm following the thought process here.

This makes you look like a douche.

But this .....

is perfectly fine?

OK just checkin.....

I dont think the hololens are made to be worn outside like a pair of sunglasses, it is a productivity tool to be used with your computer.

I want a big, swipe-able FTP server displayed.

Now that I could use.

Google Glass + 3D eh?
In concept it sounds like a winner. In reality it all hinges on the execution.

Took MS 3 generations and 2 models to finally put out a great tablet. Hope they've got the money to stick with this for a few generations.

C'mon, they didn't demo it showing holographic porn? Everyone knows that's what it would be used for.

The douchey thing about the former is that Google's peons were encouraged to wear them everywhere, sticking a camera up in people's faces while they are at the bar with the girlfriend (like they want the wife to know) or taking a leak in the john or watching a movie.

I have a strong feeling the latter wouldn't be used in that fashion, and would be worn just temporarily at home like a Rift.

No. It was the way that some of the wearers acted. Like they were King/Queen of Technology. It was almost like the ol' joke: How do you know someone has Google Glass? They tell you. It's that they had those glasses, and they should be able to wear them where they want, even if cameras or recording devices are not allowed - because they are glasses.

Glassholes. Google Glass is fine. Pretty cool. It's the people that ruined it for me, not the product itself.

Forgot the quote (no edit button :( ):
But before you can apply your jaded "I've done VR before" attitude to this situation, you look down at the coffee table and there's a castle sitting right on the damn thing. It's not shimmery, but it's not quite real, either. It's just sitting there, perfectly flat on the table, reacting in space to your head movements. It's nearly as lifelike as the actual table, and there's no lag at all. The castle is there. It's simply magic.

The future of porn is going to be fucking amazing. You'll be able to torrent an entire collection of pornstars to suck you off at any time.

It's the demographic. We are discussing this on a website whereby it's followers geek out (i'm including myself in this) over processors, memory chips, motherboards and hard drives. Our geek factor is so high that most tech forums have zones whereby one group can talk among themselves about how much their overclock (usually one of 5 - 10% ) makes them superior. If there ever became a time whereby pissing on hardware digitally would effect the person they were arguing with physically we would do it in a heartbeat.

Translation: Geeks who buy expensive hardware usually have an extraordinary high asshole factor immediately following a purchase, It's not limited to Google Glass. All it did was allow one to identify a potential confrontation from farther away. You should be thankful that Google made it easy for you to identify someone who is about to talk you to death about some hardware you didn't buy.

This should fail just as hard as oculus.

Not sure of that, this actually looks useful. This is more augmented reality vs. virtual reality. More Google Glass than Oculus. Think of it like a heads up display.

Also just because you have no interest in Oculus doesn't mean it failed. I have no interest at all in the device myself, but I can see where many would like it a lot.

Yep. Hololens and Google Glass have two different usage scenarios. There is some overlap, but Hololens does not appear to be intended to be worn full time.

I don't think they are built for outside, but the point seems to be free-roam. Instead of much or VR and 3D movies where you have one point of perspective and they throw things at you. You get the 3D feel by being able to get up and move around the object.

Its more like 'dynamic perspective' on Amazon phones, but 360 around the virtual object.

I don't like gesture or voice. They are not perfect on Kinect. Make it compitable with keyboard/mouse or a wireless controller and this may be a winner.
