Just found that interesting stat on the front page of HardOCP..

Wow, if you can assume that the average price it was sold for was $29.99, that is over 270 million in sales.. Never realized that gaming companies can make that much money, if it was a movie it would be the 25th highest grossing of all time..

I have a feeling HL2 will shatter those numbers, especially if the reasonable price holds. I don't mind paying $60 for it, hell most of spend that on a 30 minute dinner and get hundreds (or in some cases) or thousands of hours out of it.

I dont know if half-life 2 will sell as much.. theres possibility but half-life stood strong at its opening price for like 5 years... hell its still not in any bargain bins, still expensive..

plus the countless team fortress and counter-strike players who used it...

unless half-life 2 can get some really successful mods (new ones) instead of a revamped counter-strike I dont think it will surpass the original.. but hey, its possible

Sniper, I couldn't disagree more.

What made half-life, beside the great single player game, was cs, tfc, dod, and in some rare cases, 3rd party mods.

So your not only gonna have the everyday user purchasing the single player HL2, but your going to have all the cs, dod, tfc, and etc users purchasing for the multiplayer use.

Not including the fact that HL was a great game, soo it already has a reputation as the sequel to a great game, something HL didnt have,,,,

Ppl will purchase just because of the hype.

My point: HL2 sales over the course of the next 5 years, will blow HL out of the water.

Sequels "NEVER" make as much or do as well as the original.
I love my CSS though.

That's a good rule of thumb but its not always true. Most sequels are just a cheap and quick way for people to cash in on the success of the first title. But if the sequel is a serious attempt it can do really well, case in point. Aliens 2 made more money than Alien, Spiderman 2 made more money than Spiderman, etc etc. And in gaming, I'm sure GTA Vice City made more money than the first one, and Quake 3 probably made more money than Quake 2, etc etc.

Half of the money from sales goes to publisher, which in the case of HL, is Sierra, later bought out by Vivendi.

And CS was a 3rd party mod.

Well actually... first you have the roughly 100% mark up at retail. So if the retailer is selling a game for $29.99 then the publisher is likely selling it to them for around $15, then they strip their 50% off so for each unit sold the developer is probably getting at most $7. Then if there were any advance involved the developer has to pay the publisher back first...

For a game like half-life everyone wins. But for most games it's very hard for the developer to make any money.

*these numbers were pulled out of my ass, a fairly well informed ass... but...

no....... ESF, is a third party mod.

The specialists, is a third party mod.

Maybe counter strike was in the very early stages of development.... but CS is most definetly not a third party mod....

Over 8 million sold huh? And they say piracy takes away sales! HA! :p

well, good luck pirating a successful fully functional copy of Half Life. the way they setup their anti cheat and steam has made it so you HAVE to buy a copy if you don't want any little glitches.

The fact that half life is still on store shelves today says something, how many other games from 5 years ago do u still see at best buy?

your also forgetting that the original half-life had 6-8 years to generate all those sales... granted it still will have the previous fanbase but your also hoping they dont release another half-life or some other engine takes over between the next several years...
