Half-Life 3 Is Being Widely Playtested Ahead of a Possible Summer Reveal, Winter Release; Game Is Playable From Beginning to End – Rumor

I was looking to see if this was a thread started on April 1st but nope...... Although, without an official statement, I would say it is nothing but rumor and hope.

Ray tracing is now old news. Valve and nvidia are going to use HL3 to introduce gamers to the next step in computer graphics' march toward realism: pimple mapping. Your favorite characters will be more lifelike than ever!!!

I still haven't finished HL2. I just didn't "get into it" like I did HL1. HL1 captivated me, esp Opposing Force.
HL1 was ground breaking at the time. It brought story and interesting story telling techniques when most games were just doom and quake clones. It's AI was also ground breaking at the time, even if it is basic by modern standards. HL2 was more iterative than ground breaking as it mostly expanded on the stuff that HL1 pioneered. Not sure how loved HL1 would be for someone trying it for the first time today, but if one played it back in the 90's or early 2000's then it really felt like a special experience. When HL2 came out it was ahead of the rest on quite a few aspects, but it wasn't as unique as HL1 was for it's time.

The weakness of the HL games is the feel of the weapons IMO. They just don't feel as satisfying to use as something like F.E.A.R., CoD, Quake, Doom etc. They do the interaction with other people, physics puzzles and the feeling of being on a journey very well though.

I heard that they gave the game a typical 'strong independent' black, female sidekick with short hair. Fucking woke culture won't stop till it ruins everything.
This is such a wonderful burn.

Meanwhile: I'll believe the HL3 rumors when I see something tangible. Not that they're necessarily wrong, but sequels to beloved 20-year-old games are pretty rare (Baldur's Gate 3 notwithstanding)... especially when Valve is involved.

I'm one of those that never played 1 but played all of 2 and the episodes. I'm curious on how the story could/would continue but I would certainly need a TLDR to catch back up again.

If they continue after alyx, I'm sure it will be good. That game in VR with knuckles was amazing. Great game play.

Guys, guys, HL3 confirmed! (See my voice code)

The ai was great, and this guy has broken down quite a bit.

AI can now effectively generate any voice. So Gordon Freeman or GMan voice should not be a problem. Story could take place anytime and not be a conclusion to the old. Just add more mystery for HL4 if successful.

After Star Wars was destroyed, we really need HL3 more then ever.

Duke Nukem Forever, Chinese Democracy, MBV, and even Megalopolis eventually all came out. The catch is that most projects delayed this long had major reasons for it and the final results weren't good. Hopefully HL3 is the exception.

The big difference is that those games all got stuck in development hell. HL3 probably wasn’t being developed for most of the past 21 years, it was just anticipated by fans. When it did finally get greenlighted for serious development, it could have had a tight and focused schedule for all we know. Under Valve’s flat management structure, being given the go-ahead means that the people spearheading the effort had to convince enough of the other developers that it was the right project at the right time to gather a big enough team.

This is way different than convincing some bigwig at a publisher to fund somebody’s half-baked idea and then choose a team lead who may or may not be an effective leader or visionary. When a project is floundering at Valve, people gradually abandon it for another project and it just peters out, rather than a traditional developer-publisher model where a dev has to quit their job if they don’t want to work on a particular game anymore. That’s why Valve almost never releases a bad or mediocre game. (or any other kind of game, for that matter) If it’s not coming together well, it doesn’t get to the finish line.

But does she have tits that equal those as seen in anime?

IMO, the widespread leaking nowadays, sucks.
What do you mean nowadays? This was always a problem! Doom 3 tech demos got leaked and HL2 had a really bad hack/leak. That's just two examples.

If you were to say it's more publicized now I could agree with that.

I feel both sorrow and envy for these people. Getting to experience it for the first time again. An experience like no other.
Back then was a magical moment in hardware and gaming. It was all consuming.

I don't mean leaked builds.

I mean spoiling games before they are announced.

Most gameshows or developer direct streams are more/less fully spoiled nowadays. Its stupid and difficult to avoid. Because news sites and forums will put the leaks in titles/headlines.

The Oblivion Remakester would have been incredible as a true shadow drop. Instead, it was leaked it exists and what month it would release.

Most of Switch 2's features were spoiled (I would have enjoyed the mouse feature to be a fresh surprise with the showing of Metroid Prime 4).

etc

So, the fact that Half-Life 3 exists and is relatively near the end of development. It would have been so cool for Valve to be able to properly announce it. Or maybe it just showed up one day on Steam front page.

Not every last game is spoiled. For example, From Software has a new, original IP which was revealed at the Switch 2 event. That was a huge secret and I am really surprised it wasn't leaked!

I think leaked builds are fine, actually (Assuming the developer has already been able to announce the game themselves and even show screenshots or something. Which was the case for Half-Life 2 and Doom 3.).
Certainly, there are ethics we could get into, surrounding how the build was aquired and leaked, etc. But sidestepping that conversation: I think leaked builds should actually be beneficial to development, in the form of user feedback. And even though they are extra work, official demos should be incentivised for feedback. If I had played the buggy portion of Half-Life 2 before release, I would have talked about how the buggy felt like shit. And would have figuratively told Valve to go and play Battlefield 2 and drive one of the Jeeps around. To this day, one of the best feeling vehicle controles for a mouse and keyboard ;)

Instead, HL2's buggy is one of the worst feeling vehicles in gaming.

When I was young you could play nearly completed builds of games years before they came out at the (open to the public back then) CES events.
I remember playing the original Mario Kart a full 2 years before it hit stores and 6 months before it was "announced" in the video game magazines at the time. Ditto with games like X-Men and Chakan for the Genesis. I think things just travel quicker/easier than back in the day.

Since that segment, I have absolutely hated vehicles inserted into FPS games.

I'm playing CP2077 and avoiding driving as much as possible.

Edit: The boat sucked, too. Thanks for reminding me, Wade88 😂.

Vehicles are pretty good in battlefield 2, 3, and 4.

Vehicles are also great in Halo and the Unreal Tournament games that had them.

When Half-Life 2 was in development vehicles were still being figured out. Valve clearly didn't figure it out.

I disagree, there were good flight models like falcon 4.0 prior to that if memory isn't faulty rn. I don't remember any wheeled vehicles from hl2 but I do remember the airboat and it not handling like airboats handle.

I just recently played through OF for the first time.... wow, I guess it's my #2 after the HL1, really fun stuff

Yeah, AI is at least advanced enough to cover Gordon's VO no prob...
