I tried a friend's STX and I'm looking for something more. I enjoyed what I heard, but in no way did it match his little tube amp...at least with the 580's.

Really? I picked up the 580's for $150 almost 8 yrs ago.
 
I bought 580's from amazon a couple of years ago when they cleared out stock. I believe they were $99? They sound great from my vintage Scott tube amp. They even sounds nice from a little amplified emu 0404 external sound card (though it does lack that nice tube warmth).

Are you guys talking about the HD 580s? Or some other variant like the MX 580s? The HD 580 used to retail for ~$299-329 IIRC back when they were new. Then during the holiday 2008 season with the 580s now having been EOL by Sennheiser, I saw a sale on the HD 580 for around $180 and wanted to buy a pair, but our budget was too tight at the time.
 
FYI folks the HD595s are currently under $150 @ Amazon. The Shure SRH840s are around the $150 mark as well; it seems both are on sale.

Looks like I bought mine back in February or March of 2007. Seems it may have been $125 not $99 but I can't find the receipt ;)

Amazon has had 'em at that price for awhile now, although I forgot there's no tax/sh. That's why I was saying the 595s will save Tsuyashu $140-200 vs a pair of $280-320 HD 600s depending on where they're purchased from.
 
Well, I just bought a pair of these. I have a Auzentech Xplosion soundcard so what would you guys recommend in terms of amp and all that. Budget is not too high, but really more about price/performance than anything

love how it was I'm gonna buy these, OR a 28mm f/1.8 and I ended up buying both.
