If you are looking to hire someone to speak at your game conference, it might be a good idea to avoid the old guy that says video games “are evil and killing the planet.”

"I think that video games are evil," says Tomino. "[Gaming] is not a type of activity that provides any support to our daily lives, and all these consoles are just consuming electricity! Let's say we have about three billion people on this planet wasting their time, bringing no productivity at all. Add 10 billion more people, and what would happen to our planet? Video games are assisting the death of our planet!"

"Add 10 billion more people, and what would happen to our planet?"

Uhhh...10 billion more people and the oceans won't have food...or there will be a massive pandemic that will wipe out 13billion and leave the earth back at a sustainable 3 billion.

I wish the kids that live across the street played video games. Suckers are constantly burning and blowing stuff around the neighborhood. :D

I used to watch Gundam when I was little and it's still awesome til this day. All I have to say is, if he's saying all that... what about all those Gundam videogames?

Wow... this is like Miyamoto saying the exact same stuff about Japan's Anime industry.....

This from the guy who spends his life helming entertainment franchises.

Imagine if everyone turned off their TVs and went outside. The world would be such a better place!

Kill em' all Tomino strikes again.

This dude's creation has spawned a generation of hopelessly obsessed fanboys that are beyond mental help. What does he think they're doing while they're glued to their TVs? Running six minute miles and 60 pushups in 60 seconds?

If you have seen many of the Gundam series, there are a couple common themes in all of them.

One of them is environmentalism. There is always the idea that 10 billion people on this planet will suck the planet dry, and that we need to stay off it (in space colonies) to allow earth to survive for future generations.

In my opinion, Tomino is now completely off his rocker. He wouldn't be saying 10 Billion game consoles would affect the environment if we all lived in space. Next thing you know, he will be calling for a spacebound society to drop an asteroid on earth to force an extinction of the human race...Who does he think he is? Char Aznable?

Okay guys, I just got back from RTFA, and it helps to put this in context.

He was talking about improving games to make them more socially benificial and accepted. It'd kind of be like Intel starting a speech off with "ONOZ COMPUTARS ARE DESTROYING TEH PLANET!!!" and ending it with "...and that's why we're working on this chip that has almost zero power consumption!"

So while I think the whole "Games are teh devil!" line was mostly rhetorical, he does see gaming as having significant room for improvement.

Video games are evil and a waste of resources and time .....

But watching Gundam cartoons will eliminate global warming, solve the worlds energy problems, and cause all endangered species to start procreating like rabbits.

I can see why all the gundam games I have played have no story line other then go defeat this many Mobile suits. It would be nice to have one based of the story of Gundam Wing or Zeta Gundam.

This guy is an idiot. In my opinion playing video games is less of a waste of time than watching the Gundam series. At least video games are interactive and can sometimes challenge the mind. Even when they aren't challenging you can make two arguments for video games over TV. The first is that the use of the controller or other input devices burns some calories. Even if it isn't much, it's more than you burn while watching TV. The second is that even when you aren't being challenged mentally by the game, it still requires more thought and mental processes than sitting on your ass and watching TV. There are also social aspect to multiplayer games.

What about this guy's royalty checks for the Gundam games? I bet he doesn't view those as a waste of time when he's lining his pockets.

But what about all the trees we are saving by not reading books. :D

I wouldn't go out to call him an idiot, but this is definitely a pot calling the kettle black. If anything he is most responsible for all the extra toxic waste that is on this planet with all those PVC/plastic/resin model kits that have been created from his franchise. He needs to have had this speech pointed towards his own industry and not towards the videogame industry. I get that he is getting old, running out of ideas and wanting to leave a legacy. Attacking your friends though to tell them to do a better job is not going to do it.

Maybe he's just jealous that people are playing video games instead of watching his anime. For someone worried about creativity,he's made a lot of money milking the same ideas for decades.

Or maybe he's just jealous that 08th Team, 0080, 0083, Seed, 00, and all the other non-Tomino elements to the franchise > MSG, Zeta.

Sour grapes, old man. I think I'll go play some Zeonic Front...

Exactly. TV is the absolute worst. The only thing that does less to exercise the mind or body is sleeping. Of course we need 8 hours of sleep, no one needs to watch TV.

Giant super robots...................cool
Idiots......................................not cool

hes know as Tomino the butcher for killing off scores of characters in his works

thats the other thing Gundam was a novel first and Tomino is still a novel writer first and foremost

and the Gundam novel the few that are in english are much much better then the TV shows

Of course gaming is a "waste" of energy. On the other hand, it's not as a big a waste of energy as other leisure pursuits..like car racing, flying etc. Even hiking etc. uses more energy since you have to pack a car full of stuff and usually drive for some distance before you actually get out of the city.

As for wasting time, I think we humans deserve to have some spare time in which we can do whatever we want (as long as it's legal and doesn't harm anyone directly). We aren't slaves, even though it might feel like that sometimes. Or, should we be "productive" 16 hours a day, 7 days a week?

Sitting on your ass staring at a box is a waste of time, so is sitting on your ass pushing buttons staring at a wall..they are pretty much evil imo.

Its taken me to my late 20s to realize that if i were working instead of playing dumbass video games id have my motorcycle ready for racing and id also have that 600hp honda i always wanted. And id be in a 2200sq ft house in the country instead of the 1150sq ft condo in the burbs. Thats my fault for sure but yeah its been almost a total waste for not much enjoyment. Fucking video games.

Oh and tv is a complete joke. I watch maybe an hour a week, and its history or science related.

Video games are not productive... coming from the guy who made mindless TV shows about robots fighting in outer space. Genius.

Do these old farts not realize that video games are just another form of entertainment? I bet this guy's parents said the same exact thing when television first became popular and affordable. Screw this guy.

Is not the things that are evil. It's the choice of activities you make with those things that might be evil or not. Whoever says that a thing and not a person's acts are evil is basically saying that the whole humanity has no will power,no decision making power and are just a bunch of herded cattle that does what they're told to do. Basically he's disrespecting the entire human race.

The guy is perfectly right, video games do assist in the ruin of this world. If we had people spending that time on being productive instead of sitting on their butts creating and taking part in pure fantasy tripe the world would learn to be much more responsible.

Total waste of electricity, time, money and effort....

Could I find these novels at Barnes and Nobles?

This is like a porn star saying that video games are taking away family values.

If you're a soccer mom, you'll hate everything that doesn't have bunnies and Jesus. I'm certain that Gundam fits into that category as well.
