GTA IV coming April 29th 2008 !!!!

I seem to recall playing this in 1998 ;)

Seems Rockstar isn't breaking their long-established tradition of "console first, PC much, much later". Unfortunate.

Seems Rockstar isn't breaking their long-established tradition of "console first, PC much, much later". Unfortunate.

I started with the 2d pc GTA games too. ;)

It's unfortunate PC has to wait, but I see where Rockstar is coming from. A simultaneous PC release, that would inevitably be cracked/pirated, could substantially impact console game sales. Indeed, maybe console sales themselves. At least it wasn't delayed again. PC release should be out before this Christmas hopefully.

Summary of new details, courtesy of GTA4.net:

* The game has now essentially been completed. Rockstar are just polishing the game and dealing with bugs, glitches and minor things.

* The release date has yet to be decided. "Before the end of April" is unfortunately all we know. The gaming press will receive a hands-on preview before then - in approximately one month from now.

* The Liberty City map was shown briefly during the demo. Kikizo describe it as containing a large island in the middle (Algonquin) with a similarly sized island to the left (Alderney) and two islands to the right - a small one (Bohan) up north with Broker and Dukes underneath. Rockstar also commented on the map found in Trailer 3 by our forum member Bluespot. "My God!" was their reaction. In other words, yes, it is indeed the map. Well done to Bluespot!

* Liberty City will contain a subway system, which Niko is able to use. The system covers - at the very least - Broker and Algonquin, but we aren't sure about the other areas yet.

* A speedboat journey around (approximately) half of Algonquin lasted 5 real-world minutes.

* In terms of camera views, all the traditional views are still there, and there will now also be a dashboard view.

* During the demo, they passed a restaurant called "Poop Deck," where they met with Francis McGreary. Other places mentioned are Oneida Avenue, 99 Long Road (Broker), a bar called Perestroika, South Parkway, Franklyn Street Westbank, and Albannay.

* Three missions were previewed during the demonstration. The first one was "Search and Delete," followed by "Deconstruction for Beginners" and then "Truck Hustle". A new character called Playboy X is introduced by Elizabeta (a mutual friend) during the second mission. Playboy X lives in a mansion, and eventually provides missions for Niko. A second character called Dwayne Ford is introduced, who just got out of prison. He taught Playboy X "everything he knows," apparently. In the third mission, two characters called Ray and Bell are introduced. They are from the mafia, and are trying to help Niko find someone, but want some favours done in return.

* The character Brucie is introduced to Niko by his cousin Roman. Brucie runs a garage just around the corner from Roman's taxi depot in Broker.

* Characters often look different each time you see them instead of perpetually wearing the same clothes like in previous GTAs.

* The red and blue search radius on the radar is centred around the point where the crime was committed, and your last known whereabouts.

* Every police car in Liberty City has an on-board computer, on which you can access the police database files for anybody who's got a criminal record, or any other details that the police are aware of.

* You can smash your own car window to enable you to shoot from it; you can free-aim outside of your window using the right analogue.

* Liberty City has one airport, based on JFK, called Francis International Airport (yes, it's the same name given to the airport in GTA3). It is located in on the East of the city.

* Progress is automatically saved after completing a mission. There are also safe houses dotted around the city, which you can save at any time.

* In this demo, the cell network is called Badger, whereas in the last demo it was called Whiz.

* Building and maintaining relationships with characters is important. During the preview, Jacob comes to meet you rather than vice versa. This is only possible once your friendship with Jacob has developed to a certain stage. Relationships can be damaged if you (for example) fail to turn up for meetings, or snub the character too many times. Maintaining good relationships with characters provides benefits.

* Pool, eating, darts, drinking and bowling are just some of the activities you can do with your friends to maintain relationships. The cellphone is used to access these activities via a menu. If you go for a drink and drink too much, Niko will get drunk. When this happens, the radar reads "You are drunk. Your vision is blurred." and the camera begins to shake, which makes driving difficult.

* There is a radio station called IF99.

* The game clock is no longer one minute = one hour. It is now two minutes = one hour. So days now last longer.

* Niko receives phone calls from people throughout the game. If someone really wants to get in touch with you about an important issue, they will keep on phoning.

* The new targetting system was described. There are eight purple segments in the target circle that make up someone's health, which you get when you're locked on - during free aiming you don't get the indicator.

* Expensive cars have better GPS systems than poorer ones. The one they enter during the preview session "talks us through the streets!"

* The cellphone can be used to listen to radio stations, so now you can listen to music at any time.

* The GTA 4 weather system does not feature seasons, and there is no snow.

A console game is MUCH easier to pirate. There is ZERO copy protection.

lol what are you smoking? console games are harder to pirate. who is dumb enough to open up there console and install a mod chip and get banned from xbox live forever? LOL

A console game is MUCH easier to pirate. There is ZERO copy protection.

X360 games are easier to initially pirate and get out for illegal distribution, due to the fact that it doesn't need to be cracked. But one needs a modded console to play it. You can't pirate PS3 games. Anyone with a computer can download a pirated copy of a PC game. I'm just saying a cracked PC copy of GTA4, would hurt sales on both platforms. It will eventually come to PC and get cracked anyways, but hopefully by that time, Rockstar will have already made a billion dollars. :p

I'd assume so, yeah. The PC variants generally seem to come in six months or so after the initial launch from what I'm seeing. I'd guess October/November.

I'm just not sure I'm going to bite on this one, though. I appreciate the return to the more typical mafioso-type storyline (as opposed to San Andreas' annoying gangster elements), but from what I've read, I don't see anything that leaps out at me in terms of being able to do anything radically new. The GPS systems seem like a very welcome addition though.

Looking forward to whatever Hot Coffee-type "unintentional slip-up" that'll hit the evening news though :)

Well you can get game images and make game images for your PS3 but either a Hard or Soft Mod is yet to be released in order to play them.

PC version rumored for October. So you fence sitters must wait or drop the bones for a PS3/X360. Time to jump in people ! :D

• GTA IV uses Rockstar's own proprietary game engine, RAGE (previously seen in Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis), while also employing NaturalMotion's 'euphoria' animation engine to create dynamic real-time character movement. (Euphoria is the same middleware as Star Wars Force Unleashed)

• Niko will be able to socialise with associates to improve his 'friendship' with them. Leisure pursuits will include drinking, eating, bowling, clubbing (including cabaret and strip) and darts. These activities aren't compulsory, but players that spend time hanging-out will be rewarded.

• The Liberty City Police Department will be the largest, most intelligent - thanks to the greatly improved AI - upholders of the law ever seen in a GTA.

• Liberty City will change fundamentally when the sun goes down - with different pedestrians, and more dangers, appearing on the streets.

• Niko can get shit-faced drunk and GTA IV features the best, most hilarious pissed-up stumbling physics we've ever seen. When inebriated, controlling Niko - or the vehicle he's attempting to drive - becomes mighty tricky, the screen blurs and the camera moves erratically.

• Rockstar's Dan Houser (vice president of creative) says about GTA IV: "It's so much more dense and detailed, not only horizontally but also vertically. It's by far the most ambitious GTA game to date."

This game can't get here soon enough.

Your wrong.
You need a modchip, at the very least, to pirate console games and play them.
Thats alot more effort and warranty-voiding to pirate a game, compared to cracking a PC game.

as a resident of queens i object to that map! ultimately who cares, but still, it's not geographically accurate. (brooklyn should be on bottom, queens on top)

Yeah the guy who drew that map already mentioned he got it backwards. :)

He forgot a bunch of other bridges too. Bohan should connect to the top of Algonquin right ?

This one's from mafioso on gta4.net.

The landmasses were drawn from memory by someone at Kiziko who played the game at the recent press junket. But Alderney looks a little big to me. I know NJ is huge relative to NYC, but it's the biggest area in the game !

this is the main reason i go xbox360

pc version of the past GTA's sucked in comparrison. imo

i use pc for fps

console for 3rd person and sports games

WTF? Did you play GTA:SA on PC? So much better with mouse-aim. You can headshot everyone so much easier. There are multiplayer MODs, which rock. And lots of other MODs, including longer view distances.

Also you can get much higher resolution gfx. Your limited to 720x480.

I've actually enjoyed the PC versions much more thus far, we'll see how IV fairs though.

This game and a hand full of other titles has me seriosuly considering a PS3 purchase this Spring..

Agreed,I also think it was better on the PC overall by a good leap.

really?

maybe its just because i played GTA3, and vice city.. on ps2

and then i tried San Andreas on PC, I couldn't run it at the resolution i wanted to, so it looked pretty bad, and i just didn't like the control

Im sure i just didn't give it enough time and do enough research on how to get it to run the way i wanted it. I didn't give it a major effort as the game was a gift, and i had already paid for it for PS2 and was 1/2 through it... I only gave it a good 30 min, but the wide screen 1680x1050,, just didn't look right

either way, i love it on console, and it comes out 5 months earlier and i cant fu*king wait

I am going have to wait for it to come out on PC

This is what I hate about GTA games, on trailers they show really awesome graphics, but by the time the game is out, its already crappy graphics.

thats a pretty big assumption based on a few ps2 games. this is the first gta to get a huge graphic overhaul in years, It's really going to look that good.

and yeah i guess I'm assuming too, but we know how good 360 games can look and these graphics are right up there.

don't you mean 1280x720?

the 360 will scale that up to 1920x1080 also.

don't you mean 1280x720?
He was talking to the person who said they use a console for GTA games because they don't play as well on the PC. Then he referenced GTA:SA which would have been 720x480 on a console and said you can get much better resolutions with the PC.

I think the last GTA game I played was Vice City. I played it for 30 minutes and never touched it again. Talk about overhyped.

No, I dont mean 1280x720. GTA:SA is a PS2/XBox game, thusly it runs at a SDTV resolution of 720x480. And the 360 can scale all it wants, but it's not rendering the textures/polygons at 1920x1080. It's just taking the video signal, and "upscalling" it.

The game running at 1920x1080 on the PC will look way better than a "scaled" image from the 360/PS3.
