It didn’t take long for people to get upset over the upcoming Grand Theft Auto. The trailer has been out what, 3 days?

And outraged political leaders say the rampant brutality of the game, Grand Theft Auto IV, has little in common with reality.

...there were barely people in the trailer, and none of them were even committing violence, let alone brutal violence. God, I hate "me too" politicians.

It's unreal isn't it?

Obviously just the mention of the name will now bring on the end of the world.

In previous incarnations, players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes. Details of the latest version have not been released.

I dont ever remember selling pornography to children in any GTA game.

Honestly there has never been a proven link between video game violence and real life violence.

Its entertainment pure and simple. Once these holier than thou people realize that by making this such a media frenzy, they are actually having the oppisite effect they intended.

Wow, is this shit ever going to end? I love how politicians jump all over a trailer that showed absolutely no violence. Just the mere mention of the name GTA is enough to get their panties in a bunch. It amazes me how video games get such a bad rep and yet no one says jack about movies. Not to mention their idea of GTA is COMPLETELY off the map. You do NOT advance through the game by killing cops, selling porn to kids (which you can't even do), or killing prostitutes. You have the OPTION of doing those things but they're not required at all. Can't even get that right and yet they expect us to believe their garbage opinions.

It's not going to ever end until folks make it clear that we expect our elected officials to educate themselves on the issues before they speak out.

Until they realize that 99.99% of the gaming population aren't violent people, then this is going to continue forever.

Wait, so why wasn't Halo politically incorrect? It's more violent than GTA, and it doesn't promote tolerance- anyone that isn't "one of us," must automatically die. Notice how all of the humans looked identical, doesn't that promote racism/aryanism?

 (That's sarcasm, if you couldn't tell.)

As the trailer shows well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Cyclone in Coney Island, a character voiceover warns: "Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."

They have NO idea.. maybe this version will be about helping people and carrying old grannies across the street!

Ok.. probably not, but seriously stfu about how bad the game is going to be. Games don't cause violence, dumb people do.

Haha, I wish there was a way to publicly throw these comments back in their faces. It's hilarious and quite obvious they haven't even watched the trailer, they just want to speak out to the general elderly woman, and retarded PETA Vegan women who nod their heads in smug satisfaction when anyone agrees that violence in any way or form is the devil itself.

Ironically all the media frenzy these politicians/news media creates usually drives game sales even more. I guess the buzz generated will make the general public more aware of whats going on.

No doubt... Hey, why spend money on advertising when the idiot press and idiot politicians will do it for you.. Another GTA blockbuster, all thanks to the people decrying it.. They are not even smart enough to realize that they are, in fact, promoting the game.. :D

In its first trailers released this week, Grand Theft Auto is set in a mythical city that bears a striking resemblance to New York.

And the GTA before that had a striking resemblance to San Francisco, Las Vegas & Los Angeles, and the one before that had a resemblance to Miami, and the one before that New yo... oops we've run full circle.

Little whiny bitches, you swear they're personally offended that New York is being portrayed in this game as a "dangerous city". Don't eat mushrooms either, they might cause you to become super big! Fricking morons.

They should make "GTA: Pony Island" where you raise ponies and can color and style their tails or such. Just to f*** with those people, and see what they say. :D

What happens in the part the little kids ride the ponies and pull their hair to make them go faster  ! OH NO, HORRIFIC VIOLENCE AND CRUELTY TO ANIMALS!

:p

My goodness! A video game that doesn't accurately reflect reality? We'd better nip that trend in the bud.

I wonder if they had a problem with Fort Apache The Bronx. That was a pretty brutal depiction of NYC. Where are all the articles about how dangerous The Shield is?

Ole Willie was right: they kill what they fear and they fear what they don't understand.

zomg im gonna kill cops now so i can "earn points" thats soo cool! why sell pornography to children when its widely available on the world wide webs and on the news :D

btw that was barely even a teaser trailer, i wonder what will happen when an actual trailer comes out :/

It's funny how one city started bitching now others are joining the chorus. Still I didnt expect NY to have a cry , they didn't have a problem with Deus Ex for example. Whose gonna be next , LA?

Well, what did they expect! I mean, MOST video games do not take place in the realm of what we would all call "reality!"

Hentai games don't take place in reality, RPG's don't take place in reality, etc.

You just have to teach your child that "Okay, killing other peope is fine in fantasy and in your own mind, but in real life it is wrong and not acceptable!"

"And outraged political leaders say the rampant brutality of the game, Grand Theft Auto IV, has little in common with reality."

IT"S A VIDEO GAME!!!! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH REALITY!!!!

Some politicians say GTA is responsible for crime, lets look. Grand Theft Auto came out in 1997 and the murder rate was 6.8 per 100,000 people. By 2005 the murder rate was 5.6. So GTA is reducing crime. It's saved the lives of tens of thousands of people.

We should replace our politicians with game designers.

This was posted on April 1st. A new posting on Gamespot on a sunday? Aprils fools maybe?

QFT Unfortunately people many don't see it that way.

Sorry, but the fact that killing cops and prostitutes is still in there, and only the porn-related charge is untrue, just makes for a touch of irony as rich as a piece of fudge. :D

Nono, a game that accurately depicts reality would be a game with a bunch of politicians seeing who can fill their pockets the deepest by getting away with things they say.. and each time they say something that the public swallows, their pockets are lined with more cash.

Oh and if you play this game and are stuck, just blame it on games.
