Greatest Game Ever

The greatest game ever is either Final Fantasy III (6 in Japan) or Chrono Trigger for the SNES. Both of these games represent console RPGs at their best. FF3 has the most lovable characters and engrossing storyline to be seen in a game whereas Chrono Trigger has an equally engrossing storyline along with a surprisingly fun battle system and an enormous replay factor thanks to the multiple endings. While I also recognize Final Fantasy VII as one of the best games of all time, it still fails to live up to the incredible standards established by Square during the days of 16-bit dominance. I honestly believe that no other console RPG will ever be as innovative or endearing as FF3 or Chrono Trigger.

Honorable Mentions: Final Fantasy VII, Age of Empires II, Metal Gear Solid

Hmmm, cant believe no votes for WOW, but maybe a mmorpjhgtys or whatever the designation is...

anyway i liked diablo, i liked baldurs gate, so WOW is the best of both worlds and visually stunning to boot.

WoW wins a different category: the most financially successful PC game of all time. That doesn't mean the game is up to snuff with some of the ones listed in this thread.

WoW is still fairly new, but i wouldn't ever place a vote into it for being a great or memorable game (except for having one of the worste launch days out of all MMO's)

my favorite game being a MMO, i handed my vote to EQ.

Although MMORPGs can be very entertaining (I know WoW took up a good bit of my life), I think there are a few things that keep them from being considered as some of the best games of all time.

First of all, they can't be beaten. No matter how much epic gear you get or how high you level up, you will never gain closure that fills a gamer with a sense of accomplishment. When you spend 80+ hours on Dragon Quest VIII, you get awesome gear and a great ending. When you spend several months on WoW, you get bored and either start a new character or sell yours on Ebay. You don't quit because your finished with the game.

Second of all, gamers probably won't be very nostalgic about MMORPGs years from now. When I think of my favorite games of all time, I think of the first time I saw Aeris die or Solid Snake taking on Liquid Snake. I probably won't tell my children about the time I grind quested to LVL 30 or got a bad roll after spending 5 hours in an instance.

While gameplay is by far the most important aspect of video games, I believe a great story complimented by innovative gameplay creates the best gaming experience.

Agreed, story with great gameplay makes all the difference in the world. Metal Gear Solid is a perfect example...cinematic gaming at it's best.

I think i'll just give a list too. There are some games which you always remember, and then some that just pop into your head and you think "OMG I CAN"T BELIEVE I FORGOT THAT GAME LOLZZ!!!111!"

So the list might be updated several times :p

Yoshi's island.
Super Metroid
CS
Diablo II
Final Fantasy 9
Legend of zelda : Ocarina of Time
GTA3
Morrowind
Mario 64
Goldeneye
Mario Kart 64

FF7.

I remember playing the demo (included in the tobal box) countless times before I actually purchased the game.

I cant pick just one but I dont have too many that qualify in my book.

Doom Series (Excluding Doom 3, good but not great)
Quake Series
Diablo Series
Goldeneye
Legend Of Zelda : ALTTP

Best PC games:

Deus Ex
Starcraft
TIE Fighter (Collector's Edition)
Half-Life

(help I can't choose ahhhhhhhh :p )

CRAP I cant believe I forgot...

STAR CONTROL

Tell me someone else has played that masterpiece?

i can honestly say hl2 altho im more of a fan of ID games...i think recently however there gameplay is just repetitive..every level the same as the last

Deus Ex....
 you gotta be kidding. I was unaware anyone liked that P.O.S.. it was wanna B fps and a resource pig. it takes all kinds I guess

strat= command and conquer red alert 2
fps= Call of Duty 2
hey, i just got a new sys, looking for games besides that shadow ops crap for 64bit support, patch for generals if possible

so many good ones.

Id have to say one of them is final fantasy tactics, no other game is like it and held my attention for as long singleplayer.

blades of steel was awesome for nes

myth and myth 2 soulblighter were amazing online games also.

cant forget sc and bw and basicly every blizzard game ever made. although i must admit i play WoW more then any of them.

o ya and DotA rocks

Number 1 at the moment and has been for a while
the whole Battlefield series

Love Battlefield 2 right now...the Armoured Fury pack is fantastic

Probably one out of the two following games for me....

1 - Street Fighter 2 (and its variants) (SNES)

2 - Sensible World of Soccer (Amiga)

Just because they were the be all and end all of multiplayer gaming for me and my best friend at the time. No one could beat us on either of them and we used to have some epic confrontations on both of them. As soon as one of us raised our game and looked unstopable, the other one would in turn raise our game and clinch back the title.

ISS64 and Goldeneye on the N64 would come a close third and fourth ;)

Happy days :D

I still stand by Final Fantasy 2 as my most beloved game. That one got the ball rolling on my gaming career. Been hooked on em ever since.

As far as greatest game ever...I would also have to say EQ. I'm kinda against MMO's now but damn I loved that game.

Any Zelda game (except the 2nd one)
Star Control 2 rocked on my brothers 3DO but the third was complete shit.
Anything by Id software.
Tie fighter.

GTA 3 - the dark, realistic atmosphere and great map design make this my favorite GTA. I love everything in this game.

It hasnt been mentioned yet, and I know my picks for Greatest game ever are FF7 and Super Metroid... however Castlevania Symphony of the Night (PSX) would be another game to claim "the Greatest" of all time.

As well as Mega Man 2 :p

To realistically get anywhere close to defining one game or a top 10 games you have to do this by genre, you simply cannot compare genres.

RTS - Most old school RTS fans will probably agree Starcraft was/is the best RTS
FPS - Easy launch into the norm by saying Half-Life and it really deserves it, but theres some other fantastic more niche FPS titles such as Thief which really made for awesome games.
RPG - Fallout 2, In my more limited experience with RPG's still bring me to think that fallout 2 is still one of the best games around, despite its age.

I feel like starting a little bit of controversy here. I'm glad to see people all their different opinions and such, but I'd like to say something that's bugged me for quite a few years (no, really).

I've read all sorts of magazines (PC Gamer, CGW), web sites (GameSpy), and people's ideas (like the ones in this thread), and most of them claim that Half-Life is the greatest game ever.

I've never agreed with that...I played Half Life and it's multitude of mods extensively, but I fail to see why HL gets the most votes. To me, HL was very boring...I mean, you start the game in a fresh manner (presentation wise I mean), then the experiment goes awry, then you're stuck running around from point A to B, with bits of action in b/w. As far as I am concerned, the only new thing HL did for FPS games was its opening sequence. It didn't introduce anything new as far as technology is concerned.

If I may, I'd like to compare it to DOOM, my vote for GGE. DOOM's impact on the gaming industry was unprecedented. It introduced, or at least perpetuated, everything that makes the industry what it is today. From multiplayer to mods, DOOM revolutionized the ENTIRE industry, to some degree. HL only affected the FPS genre; yes, it has some of the best known mods ever, but always remember, there's a good chance those mods wouldn't exist if DOOM didn't do it first.

Again this is my own opinion...I just felt like gettting it out in the open.

totally man. I found it frustrating to find out where to go so I looked online but then soon after I gave up and is why so many FPS's suck now. its the same shit over 'n over. too linear. that's lame if you're so frustrated in figgerin something out ya gotta cheat. the cs aspect gives it the biggest thumbs up but HL was lame IMO

Secret of Mana. Best plot, gameplay, graphics, etc you could have in a game. I've yet to find a game that plays the same.
Multiplayer rocks also!
My pick though is the original Zelda on the great NES! Levels 7, 8, and 9 were simply some of the toughest puzzles that 3 twelve year old boys ever had to solve. :) Memories rock!

my vote for half life, its the first game to totally suck me in, i was addicted, many many hours playing that thing, NO CHEATS!

I have quite a few actually...

Castlevania symphony of the night(ps1)(one of the best soundtracks for a game ever)
Final Fantasy 7(ps1)
Half-Life 2(I'm gonna have to buy this one again...sold off my copy. I'm building a new gaming rig soon....I'm one of the few who never beat it. It was fun as hell though!)
Adventure Island(gotta show some love for higgins! :p
Dungeon Keeper(Old skool!! I played this game for 2 years straight...."Your creatures are becoming angry!!!" Thinking about that voice on the game saying that makes me laugh)
Resident Evil Code Veronica(Dreamcast)The best resident evil next to part 4(at least I think)
Resident Evil 4

I don't dig too many new games now adays. They just seem too flashy, trying to impress me with their bump mapping and specular whatchamacallit.

Dungeon Keeper 2 is one of my all-time favorites. I never laughed at a game harder then when one of my trolls hit the jackpot in the casino and I saw all the guys in there line dancing while Disco Inferno was jamming.

the next grand theft auto will be the greatest game ever.
if and only if full control of actions are allowed or it will be just prettier and nothing new. since the game is all about agression IMO, I wanna put ppl on fire, dismember, rape/hump :D (yes I am sick), see more bones break, more blood and guts, ppl crying and begging for their lives and all the nastyness one can do

GO GO GO!

super mario
GTA 3 - comon this lead to a whole new era of games on the ps2

Jeeps, tanks, planes, boats, sub, ships, parachutes, artillery, guns, grenades, mines, explosives, machine guns, and knifes. Pure online fun. :D
