It appears that an increasing number of Seattleites are using graffiti to vent their anger at Amazon and Jeff Bezos, who is being blamed for the city’s rapid changes. Everything from bridges to Amazon Lockers have been vandalized, some just blocks from headquarters.

Many see Bezos and Amazon as partially to blame for the dearth of affordable housing in Seattle, which has the third-highest homeless population in the nation, according to Zillow data. That was the message of the most ardent supporters of Seattle’s recently defeated head tax, which would have funded affordable housing and homeless services by taxing big businesses like Amazon.

Lol, yup definitely Amazon's fault the voters in Seattle wanted to raise minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour... That definitely didn't cause housing prices to go up.. as far as the homeless shit in Seattle.. you can't make people do what they don't want to.. they willingly choose to live on the streets because they make more money per day begging on a corner then I do working 40 hours a week and tax free on top of that.

Who would have thought that they would have rising numbers of homeless, who would have thought that costs of goods and housing would go up....Oh, that's right, everyone who was against them passing a raise to a $15 minimum wage. You end up with less people getting jobs, and those who do end up seeing a rise in the cost of living. They (Seattle) has also imposed a head tax on Amazon for each employee they employ, making this even worse.

And housing costs have doubled only in pretty recent times, and have some of the most restrictive housing regulations that are mostly at fault for those rises in costs, such as:

  • the state’s Growth Management Act which restricts available land and creates artificial density;
  • long building-permit approval times;
  • building and permit fees;
  • and municipal land-use restrictions

Now, people can argue all day long on if they want or don't want housing and zoning restrictions, what you can't complain about however if you are for them, is how they effect housing prices. Because "Politicians and the voting public largely continue to overlook zoning’s impact on housing prices. Instead, they look to top-down measures like head taxes and housing subsidies as quick fixes to problems such as housing affordability."

$15/hr minimum wage isn't realistic simply put.

It just further drives businesses to innovate ways to eliminate the positions entirely. No person was made to live off the wages of flipping burgers and bagging groceries. They were once considered jobs for high school kids and college kids for "on the side" income. Now we have dumb fucks everywhere with no initiative in life declaring that those are the only jobs they can get the skills for. It's downright pathetic.

It's a mixture of that and poorer education. They think free College will fix that. However, the bigger issue is K-12 being such shit. All free college will do is raise the job requirements and lower the value of a Bachelor's. But, it'll win points for a political party even though it's making life worse and more expensive.

I don't believe college education isn't the fix. There's a lot of positions that "require college education" on their applications that really don't need a college education to perform. Its just when you have so many applicants, you got to weed it out quickly, and that is just a fast checkbox for hiring managers to quickly disqualify the applicants to more manageable levels. It also causes people to incur student load debts that they can't realistically pay off, because tuition prices are out of control from the mentality among people that "I can't be successful without a college degree". And the jobs that "require college education" don't pay enough to payback the loan.

I actually think some people would be better off going to trade schools and becoming a plumber, electrician, carpenter or other craftsman. You'd be surprised what you can make in those trades.

Hell, even a truck driver can make good coin without a college education, and there's a huge shortage of them right now, too bad many don't want the job.

I also see no good reason to keep people in school for 18 fucking years. I feel that around 8th grade ~14 years old you should have enough basic knowledge to be an adult. The last 4 years of high school should become three paths: Academic (College) Trade, Military. Let them spend 4 years learning a trade that can get them a job at 18, or let them spend the next 4 years prepping for college, or 4 years of ROTC type courses. We also need to stop pushing the idea that trades are 'blue collar' when in fact, many tradesmen are taking home WAY more at a WAY earlier age than AVERAGE college grads, not the well connected Ivy League kids.

Our system is asinine.

I completely agree in actively removing the myth of College necessity.

I studied film and I largely feel I wasted a large sum of money. Not that the information I learned was useless, but that I learned more on my own. What I wouldn't trade was the hands on workshops, but to have that coupled with the boring lectures just inflated the price. I could read that stuff on my own and did.

I left the industry because I found the majority of the management to be completely toxic and fraternity like in their hazing of workers. It was disgusting to me and something I wanted no part of. I think it's emotional and physical abuse what they put people through. They don't teach that in College, and they certainly don't see themselves that way.

You shouldn't need unionization to not work people 20+ hours and to belittle them constantly in public in a manner that demeans their confidence. Uou don't win any moral/social points. That's why I roll my eyes to most of Hollywood and socialist like agenda. They're leeches and mostly all full of shit. You lead by example and their example is abuse.

I've worked on some great shows...but the bad ones are the ones I remember.

It’s what I did. Got into a trade apprenticeship at 20, by 23 renting a home bought a good vehicle and self sufficient. Now I just make bank, good money and few bills.

14 is pretty fucking young to be deciding your life path. 18 is pretty fucking young to be deciding a life path as well in my opinion.

Your path isn't set in stone...

There's people that say this in their 50 that they don't know what they want to be when they grow up. Youre not tied to a path but most people leave high school with zero skills and float around doing nothing. At least this way you would know SOMETHING.

Fringe group trying to force their fringe policy and will on the people that rejected it, the working class of Seattle metropolitan area.

If you can't get the vote...get it by force right? Ugh

Probably one of the many homeless people living there cause he's unable to rent or buy a home which is costing a fortune thanks to Amazon's presence.

So if Amazon left, all would be right in the world (Seattle)?

Say nothing of the 45k+ jobs that would be gone.

The policies and entitlements that have been enacted over the past decade or two have no responsibility for the mess?

I grew up in Issaquah (the part that is now called Sammamish), and I have watched the seattle metropolitan area be degraded one piece at a time.

Take the time to research Seattle's slow burn, it is quite sad.

I'm just glad there are areas that aren't following in their footsteps and allow me to enjoy the PNW.

Indeed.

If you know anyone with kids near collage age, share those links and encourage them to find more. Classical liberal arts educations are a suckers bet these days. (Relatively) Cheap federal loans have caused a huge oversupply of students, driving up the costs up to ridiculous levels for a bachelors compared to what you are going to get out of it (not much more than a high school diploma would have gotten me 20 years ago). Because an oversupply of students also equates to an oversupply of graduates.

Yeah, damn those successful people - they're the real problem!

Not artificial restrictions on growth put in by idiot politicians: https://www.seattletimes.com/busine...h-most-new-housing-restricted-to-a-few-areas/

No - restricting growth isn't the problem, it's too much success!

Seriously dude? How can you not be embarrassed writing such stuff?

I'm close to 40 and think that's too young to decide a life path. I just keep moving the goal post so I don't feel like a loser.

Doesn't make what I said any less true.

Pull out Amazon and you'll have homeless people without jobs. The price of living went up due to Amazon's presence, and with it created a lot of homeless people. Sure 45k+ have jobs, but what good does this do when there's an increase of homelessness? Like many things in life, too much of a good thing can be bad.

Booting Amazon out will make things far worse, but ignoring that they're the cause isn't going to fix it either.

Jeff should make stationary generator bikes all around their warehouses, several stories tall, and open 24/7, with free water and some air condition. Make it so that anyone (even the homeless) can ride one and generate electricity for some Amazon coupons. This will solve the homeless from loitering around.

Amazon didn't just all of a sudden raise housing prices in Seattle.. the vast majority of the blame rests on two things, the increased minimum wage and California.. due to the massive increase in minimum wage and the amount of people Amazon hires it flooded the region with money driving up prices that way.. the other problem is that people from California have been moving to Washington at an increasing rate over the last 20 years but more so in the last 5-8 years because it's still cheap as hell to live up here even with the rising housing costs compared to those states.. now you're also starting to see more people from southern Oregon moving to Washington as well. yet it's insanely hard to build new houses in Seattle or the surrounding area's so supply and demand comes into play.

but i agree driving Amazon out will royally fuck that city for a long time and may not ever recover from it unless they repeal a lot of the wage/tax changes that have happened since Amazon moved there. but i'm not complaining since they're moving the warehouse to my city anyways so just means more job security for me.

Errr do you honestly think anyone living in Seattle on $15/hr has access to housing you would find acceptable yourself or anyone you care about? The tiniest shitty old houses in noisy mixed industrial/residential neighborhoods are $800k+. You couldn't even rent a closet if you were making $15/hr.

name me one path you ever went down that didnt have its twists and turns??

why should life be any different?

Well, I can't speak for Seattle, but I do know that the beggers in Atlantic City are granted licenses to beg, and I have seen the one lady beg all day on the boardwalk and walk off to go to her $80K Mercedes Benz. It rumored she pulls in $2-3K a day. Tax free baby!!! American Dream!

yeah you rarely see those signs anymore even here. most if it's shit like "i know you're reading this sign so give me 25 cents for being creative" bullshit.. or the "i'm a vet pay me for your freedom" crap(a lot of them aren't vets).. and sadly shit like that works.. you'd be surprised how much money some of these people make..
