So here is the long version:

I used to run a GT1030 Graphics card in my home server / HTPC. It worked without an issue.

Then the machine developed some memory issues so I put it on ice until I could get some new RAM.

Meanwhile I used an ancient E2180 as my home server for about a month. I put the 1030 into it, and it was fine.

But now when I re-assembled the original system which has a Shuttle FX79 board, the system won't boot with the 1030. It stops after "Press Del to enter Setup" is displayed on the screen, and then freezes.

The FX79 works with a different VGA, and the 1030 also works in other boards. So What the Hell? If it didn't work with this system before I'd say OK it's one of a million chance incompatibility but it worked before without an issue.

    The short version:
Graphics card that used to work in MB no longer does
Graphics card still works in other boards
MB still works with other graphics card

What do you think it is, and what do you suggest I do?

Thanks for the suggestion, it didn't solve the issue, but it helped to narrow it down.
So it seems the GT1030 fails to boot with the MB if the boot mode is set to UEFI. Why would a modern GPU not boot in UEFI mode is beyond me.
The interesting thing is that the system is not frozen, it just stops and waits. It can be turned off by soft-off, and rebooted using CTRL-ALT-DEL

Since my system is UEFI, I guess I have a 1030 for sale.

weird that it won't boot into uefi since the card should support it unless there was some kind of bug in that bios. might be worth updating them or flashing the same bios to see if maybe the memory issues screwed something up. also is it stopping and waiting at windows or just waiting at the post screen?

Waiting at the post screen before the memory test / storage init.

I think the last bios update for this board is from 2013.

LOL, I've contacted MSI's technical support regarding the no boot issue with uefi.

It didn't turn out well. After half a dozen messages, the indian scammer in his second job/robot (I'm not even sure which is it but English was definitely not a requirement for the job) is still unable to get to grips with basic concepts.

First suggestion from them: Try it without a VGA. Of course that is impossible since X79 has no integrated display adapter. But I assumed that was an honest mistake, nothing could've prepared me for what came after that.
