Government Seizes BitTorrent Search Engine Domain

keep pretending you aren't driven by a system set in place that you think is freedom.

I played football, by the way. Though I do wish I played an instrument. Music is cool.

I'm just screwing with you. :) I mostly agree. It's just (still) better than most other places on Earth.

don't let cartman get a bead on you. he hates hippies!

Anyway, do these sites do anything other than link torrents? Are not most torrents data we usually have to pay for?

Just trying to understand. I don't know how torrents work in a legitimate sense or why this is 1984-ish due to the apparent nature of the situation.

Most of the sites seized were dealing in counterfeit goods. As for the torrent site, good riddance.

Hey, remember that one torrent site you used to like? Well, it has a new owner. That other site you liked? Ditto.

Let's assume that torrent-finder is guilty of something.

What the hell does that have to do with homeland security?

Answer: NOTHING

I've been known to defend those that protect copyrights, but this is totally wrong.

I don't understand why they don't seize google... I can find way more copyrighted stuff on google than any torrent site

Because google doesn't have the word "torrent" in there name...well that and because Google has enough money to fight the man and frankly, the public would have a fucking fit if they lost there primary search engine.

It's bullshit. There only hope, I suspect is if some outside group steps in to help them. My guess is there best hope is the ACLU and the EFF. If those guys won't help, they're probably fucked.

They can try and try but they will NEVER stop torrents, hackers or anything in that matter. The internet is a powerful place & something new will be right around the corner.

On a different note with this, why has this not been on ANY mainstream news organization. I believe if this was on the front page a lot more people would be disgusted with this bill, or was that the idea to slide it under the table at midnight. Only us "nerds" on tech sites have any idea that this happened.

I don't think the average person that votes would care. The people who would be most upset by this are probably under 30. People under 30 don't typically watch a lot of news, read news papers or, for that matter, vote.

With that said, it's a bit early to say that the MSM won't pick this up. It's really a matter of those that care about it pushing it online to make the MSM take notice. Seriously, if I didn't read [H], I wouldn't know about this. I go to Torrentfreak unless there's a link to it form some place else.

It doesn't matter if what they do is legit or not. ICE shouldn't be able to just take a domain without going through the courts....especially since it's hard to really think of a torrent related site as the domain of ICE, or DHS.

If they can do that to these guys, then why not some website that doesn't like Obama or doesn't like the next conservative president? Maybe it's a site that believes drugs should be legal...it doesn't matter, there was no due process, they just took it.

And frankly, it sounds like the site was not breaking the law.

Let's kick some ICE!

All the people crying on that board are asking for a DNS alternative....uhm...what about the IP address?

"Oh noes. I can't downloadz my pr0nz and moviez. I might have to go meet real womenz. Teh horrorz!"

Thomas Jefferson is turning over in his grave with disgust at how the American people have allowed special interest groups to take over the government. For the people and by the people is just a fading memory. Well America, the only thing that keeps you No1 is your military, they still believe in mutual assured destruction. History repeats itself, America is in the same place as the last days of the Roman Empire. Let the Orgies in the Senate begin.

Thats what they want.

Its just like Windows 7. Microsoft tryed hard to stop it from being Activated & Failed. Currently Windows 7 ultimate can be Activated without problems.

How do you take control of something when you dont have control of it in the first place?

Simply changing DNS won't do anything. Those DNS servers update from ICANN I believe. So if ICANN says X domain is invalid that information will cascade through the DNS servers causing a system-wide outage.

I thought the gov't had no control of ICANN?

everyone knows when you copy files you are supporting terrorism :p

this shit is getting old im so sick of the way the us gov is run now. we need a dam civil war/ revolution to fix this type of shit. how is this any different form china cutting off websites and crap? If this trend keeps going that's where we are heading, i wounder how many of us would take up arms agent the gov to stop crap like this and worse, sadly i bet none will and it be like 1984. And whats sad is stuff like this should be all over the news and would have been back in the cold war era but now you don't hear about shit like this and no one cares.

would the fifth amendment do anything here to protect these domains from the tyranny of the US government?

I would like to point out, corporations control the government, and they control us.
capitalism is no different than socialism or fascism. You just think it's different because this system is the best way to manipulate the masses.
we are all slaves to the system, regardless of the labels.

Yep, there's no difference between living in the US, Canada, Cuba or North Korea.

The problem is not corporations, it's government.
If I don't like what a company is doing or selling, then I can take my business elsewhere. They can't send me to jail because I don't buy thier product. However if I steal thier product, then that's another story.

Government on the other hand is about force. IF you don't like the government services, try not paying for them (taxes). Armed men will show up at you home and drag you off to jail or shoot you if you resist.

The more government does, the more corrupt it will become, and the more corporations will try to control it, both for thier own protection and benefit. Big government does not help the little guy, it just empowers the rich and well connected, since they are the ones who can afford to buy influence.

Good. A government that isn't run by corporations is a government that I don't want a part in!
Down with people!

On a side note, what the hell does copyright infringement have to do with the dept. of Immigration and Customs?

When the heck does the government need a reason for anything it does, besides a war?

Crime and poverty on the rise, unemployment still high, infrastructure that needs to be improved. etc. etc., but no, let's spend the money buying pointless domain names...

Actually, this is covered under the Fourth Amendment;

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized"

But they've been ignoring that one at the airport anyway.

I guess everyone is scrambling to get IPs of their fav sites now to put in a hosts file. ;)

Hey, I think I hear a drum circle nearby. Why don't you go join in, hippie.

Before he hits 88mph, Doc wants the 1973 dictionary you used just now. He really needs to return it to the right year.

conspiracy theorist /= hippie

There are THOUSANDS of off-grid people that get by just fine..

I could repost this quote all day. As usual, a U.S. gov't entity overstepping their bounds...again.

Google wont be seized, because the contribute too much to the people who put the bill in effect. Note, not the people that wrote the bill... I wonder who that was?

(Point of reference, the Patriot Act was written in 1995 by Sen. Joe Biden.....)

Thats what unrestricted governments do. When the governed are too distracted and lazy to keep their representatives in check, this is what you get. People in power who know what is better for you, and who will evolve government into a "utopia".
