Corporations have leverage on people in government when government is open for business. Right now, government is VERY open for business. After Obama got elected, businesses starting dumping a greater % of their budget into lobbying. The alternative is small government, small government, small government.

When the government isn't funding new programs, lobbying yields far less results.
 
Joe Biden and Obama have been bought and paid for by big media. And with former RIAA lawyers now the majority in the supreme court, I can see any attempts to have COICA stricken from law or ruled unconstitiutional get shot down very quickly.

When someone busts out the 1984 quotes (without fully comprehending the book, I imagine), I see it as the equivalent of Godwining a thread. Instead of Nazis, Orwell becomes the bludgeon of choice for those whose arguments are as deep as a puddle on the road.

i use it as a highlight to my point

this was a govt action on the behalf of a civil private entity for copyright infringement. Using the screen of counterfeit goods...just like before where they link piracy to terrorism, anything so that the lobbyists can get what they are paying the govt for.

I fully comprehend the book, that was the one thing my eng lit degree was good for (and why i'm back in school).

simply a highlighting of a point. not sure how governments pulling bullshit on their citizens doesn't have at the very least a tenuous link to the concepts in 1984.

Which Justices worked for the RIAA? I know a lot of Justice worked for the RIAA, but that's not the same as the SCOTUS.

I seriously doubt it has to do with buttkissing Obama. I voted for him, and given the same choices, I'd do it again. This isn't an Obama issue. It's a government overstepping issue, and if people make enough fuss, the Media will pick it up. Right now, it's an esoteric internet issue that won't sell to the masses....and ever since networks decided the news divisions had to be profitable, the quality of news has suffered.
 
I love how they take down random sites I never heard of before. I think Mininova was really the only significant one they've taken down permanently so far that was in the Alexa top 100.

Like Google being off the hook for millions of dollars in fines for e-mail and wifi router sniffing while mapping out google street view. Can anyone explain to me why someone at google thought this was a good idea? Any other private company that did this would be fined into oblivion.

The government still has no direct control over ICANN, the domains were taken down by request of ICE, with warrants issued by courts so it was all on the up and up. Just as ICANN will change domain ownership in a copyright suit with enough evidence the owner was cybersquatting, or the domain infringed in some way. So basically, nothing to see here ... everything is the same as it always was... enjoy your day.

Some people don't get it- Remember the media outrage about "Bush" listening in on phone calls overseas to Pakistan?

Hardly a peep from the media now over website seizures or citizens being assualted by TSA agents... or the current unemployment rate...

Their candidate is in office, so the liberal and foreign outlets, which is most of them, can only be trusted to do the bare minimum reporting with cherry topping on things that reflect badly on their preference for leadership of the US. The reverse is true when their candidate is not in office. Same goes for FOX and AM talk radio. Almost better to just make up the news in your head. It would prolly more accurate, truthful, and relevant to you.

Not that it really matters. Both parties are firmly in the pockets of the industry. Yeah, idiot movie stars and musicians tend to come out for the liberals far more often than the conservatives, but no one with half a brain listens to what they have to say anyway. The industry itself, bribes whoever it needs to get whatever it wants.

Apples and oranges. One is wiretapping/spying a U.S. Citizens, while the other is shutting down a website that most people will say was facilitating illegal activity (even some of us who believe they shouldn't be allowed to take the site down).

TSA is violating US citizens 4th amendment rights and he doesn't utter a peep but whines about people making long distance calls to pakistan that might be listened too if they are on a watch list.
