I can't say I am surprised by this ruling, especially considering what other words have been trademarked just this year alone. Took them long enough though. ;)

You could have knocked me over with a memory stick when word arrived here a few days ago that the government's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board has ruled "thumb drive" is not a generic term and therefore ThumbDriveTM is worthy of trademark protection.

What is a thumb drive, lol? I have used flash drives, flash discs, "USB sticks," dongles... but thumb drive? That's definately rare and out there :p

really? 50% of people PCs i work on call them thumb drives 10% call them flash drives and and the other 40% call them the thing i stick on side my laptop lol

I'm going to trademark Pinky DriveTM. Eveyone owes me 50 cents everytime it is used.

Fingerdrive? Toedrive? I'm gonna start calling them clit drives and patent the name. I know wtf...

I think Steve is trying to get a free ThumbDrive™ for not putting the ™ in the title for the news snippit :)

We used to call them thumb drives a few years ago, but now usually call then flash drives or USB drives. Since I dislike when companies trademark generic terms like this, I'll push people to start calling them flash drive.

What good is a trademark for a term nobody uses :)

Years ago I received a letter from Wham-O, the toy maker, reminding me that Frisbee is a registered trademark and I had erred by publishing the word without capitalization. Never did I make that mistake again, in large part because Wham-O reinforced its message by including with its letter the coolest Frisbee I had ever flung.

The ThumbDriveTM folks can consider that tale a bit of free advice.
Best part of the article. I wonder if the Trek will send him a "ThumbDriveTM". I don't think I've ever called it a "ThumbDriveTM", its always been USB Drive.

For the longest time I called em' JumpDrives, Lexar's trademark for their UFDs (the fact that the name was science-fictioney sounding was so bonus)

There's not a single day that I don't deal with UFDs (I work for a University) And they're mostly called USB "thingies" or "dillies" by the faculty I work with.

No one calls it a "thumb drive" out here where I work. It's a usb stick.

when i say thumbdrive ppl look at me funny. this is funny. i tell my kids usb thingy and the wife flash drive. but it doesnt matter thanks for the post op

I object to companies being able to rob the public domain and make common and descriptive words proprietary.

Usage of ThumbDrive and JumpDrive as generic terms has annoyed the crap out of me since flash drives became widespread. It's like calling tissues Kleenex.

"Hold on let me go xerox this"
...please just use "copy"....please....

I call em junk drives because if you lose them its no biggie, since they basically replaced floppy drives
