Got my Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" 1080p display today!

Hey chuckts, is that last photo a video played off of the computer or a TV cable signal? I'm really interested in getting this monitor...the only thing holding me back is the need to see how it performs with cable/satellite. (Need this LCD to act as my monitor & room TV)

no, thats from the computer.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I just ordered this display from Crutchfield last night... so I guess I'm joining the club. I will post pictures and a review when I receive it :)

I'm having trouble with samsclub who went out of stock a few days ago shortly after they came back into stock.

They seem to have me in limbo with my order stuck "in process". Their phone service sucks really bad too. After giving your account to the 'greeter' rep, they connect you to the dept regarding your order which means you end up on hold forever after which you are just dumped to voicemail. All that if you are lucky enough to get through their phone menu which has only a few options - none of which apply to online orders/customer reps outright. They haven't answered my inquiry via their webpage form that I left two days ago, and haven't returned any calls to the messages I have left.

I finally got through to a customer service rep that actually tried to help out. He said he'd send a ticket up to the held order department to get my order out of being held. Then I informed him that according to the webpage the item I ordered is now out of stock. I asked how long it would usually take to receive that email confirmation and he said "48 to 72 hours". I asked if I would be able to cancel my order if they are indeed out of stock and he said he did not have the authority to cancel orders past one hour after the order time, but that I could take it up with a manager after the order isn't in the 'held' state anymore.

I ordered 10/8 it is now 10/11 and I may not get my 'unheld' confirmation until 10/13 if they send it at all. So basically its looking like they are trying to hold my order hostage while they are out of stock. I did not sign up to be on a waiting list -- when I ordered they were in stock. I will wait for the 'unheld' confirmation for a day or so. If the westy is indeed completely out of stock and isn't updated to "shipped" - I am going to contact my credit card company to see if I can put a pre-emptive hold on any charges from them (they charged me for the club membership but no the display yet). After which I will contact the better business bureau for rating purposes if nothing else, and the attorney general of NY's office to hopefully go to bat for me to get my order canceled if I still can't get a manager at the vendor to cancel my order.

This is a pita. I've had trouble with warranty service and returns with vendors on different tech hardware before but this is ridiculous getting screwed with already at the order stage  If they are out of stock I want to cancel and order from somewhere else like lcdtvs.

Oh btw thanks for those pictures of World of Warcraft those look awesome. Keep those coming. I'd like to see a in-raid screenshot if possible. The HDTV-("Lost" episode) pic and desktop pic look really good also.

hey guys,

just want to remind you guys. you need to make sure your card runs 1080P

when it is running 1080i in the PIP mode, the screen and some of the icons will flicker on and off and so will the texts.

Does anyone else have the same problem?

ELVN,

I was in the same boat as you. However, I placed my order while everything was in stock. My status was updated to "COMPLETE" today...after I emailed Samsclub.com about my order.

I too had to navigate through the convoluted phone menu and just picked whatever option got me to a representative. When I did get a rep, I learned that my order was "Filled" and that it would be shipped soon. That was the day before.

I placed my order on Oct. 6, so I think you may have to wait a couple of days, before they complete your order, if my process is anything like yours.

My order is now in transit, and I look forward to receiving this monitor next week.

Keep on waiting ELVN until tomorrow and then contact them again.

DIEFATHIN, thanks for making a point of the 1080p support graphics card. I believe my card is sufficient for that purpose so I'm in the clear, but for those without, that's a pretty important detail.

Btw, which method of cable connection are most of you using for this display? DVI? Does the display come with a DVI cable? :)

Heheh, follow up post...

ENDER, thanks for shrinking those pics :) Scrolling the images did NOTHING for me, so shrinking them made a HUGE difference :)

Thanks to CHUCK(?) for posting images of the display with gameplay (albeit WoW...how about something more graphically intensive?) and video (Lost, great choice!). The desktop picture (nice wallpaper, I'm a Battlestar Galactica fan myself) is very nice. hahah at that size...it may even seem like "life-size" hhaha

I'm VERY eager to receive my display.

I'm just trying to figure out WHAT I'll try on the monitor first :)

Any little quirks I need to be aware of with this display, once I connect it to my PC? Is it pretty straightforward?

Thanks in advance.

Nope no quirks, just straight plug and play via DVI. It doesn't come with a DVI cable so you'll have to buy one.

I have to wait till december to get this :(

Yeah, I'm still saving up a little bit of cash and waiting for Christmas deals to come around. Can't wait. I think I might go for the 42" if I can afford it.

I'm on hold with samsclub again -- still no change in my order "IN PROCESS" stage >.< And still no email replies to my submissions/inquiries via their website form either.

------------------------------------------------------
six_storm I considered the 42" initially just for the fact that bestbuy carries it in their actual store, and offers extended warranty on it. Then I went with 37" at samsclub because I prefer the size and because at least I could return it to the store even though it is online order only.

As for the 42", you might consider the pixel density. The resolution is the same on both sets so the larger the screen the larger the actual pixels are going to be. Since I will be using my 37" w3 as a computer monitor/gaming monitor primarily, as well as using it for HDTV satellite-tv sometimes, I think the 37" was the better choice. As a comparison a 20.1" widescreen LCD at 1680 x 1050 is cutting it close - almost too resolution limited for my taste, so 37" at 1920 x 1080 for 37" is about as big as I would go without higher rez personally (if using as a computer display or computer/home-entertainment hybrid).

As for HDTV I also have a sony XBR 960 CRT that I looked all over for since they don't make them anymore. I found it open box at a circuit city up north of me this summer. Its "only" 34 inch widescreen but it puts 50" and larger LCD and DLP sets to shame with its picture quality. In fact I am selling my 50" LCD tv to fund the 37" westy purchase.

Size is not everything, especially depending on where you are sitting!

UPDATE --- I loaded the "IN PROCESS" order status page before being on hold with samsclub for 8mins. When the svc person finally checked my order they said " that order is shipped sir..?". I refreshed the webpage and it was indeed shipped! Phewwwww...

So I may have seemed alittle overzealous in my anxiety about the order but I have a history of companies screwing up with orders, returns and refunds. I had a large item sit in a warehouse lost for several weeks once, after which they investigated and found it left somewhere in the warehouse damaged (or so the company said anyway). There are several other incidents where things didn't get moving until you called to check up on them. The point being you have to call and check on an order or return processes repeatedly, which I've learned from experience.

hey guys, me again

uhh.. if i can understand your 'english'....

Component (r/g/b cables) will only go up to 1080i. For 1080p you need HDMI or DVI.

HD-DVD is a new medium that you will need an HD-DVD player to play it. Bluray is similar.

To play HD-DVD or Bluray on your computer, you will need an HDCP compliant video card, a bluray rom or hd-dvd rom on your computer outputting 1080p.

Guys I ordered the westy 37in 1080p from sams club and it will be here in a few days.. I ordered a dvi cable for it so I'll be ready to use it when it comes. I have a nvidia geforce go 7900gtx 512mb graphics card in my laptop.. My question is if I set the windows properties resolution to 1920x1080, is that all i need to make the display 1080p? or do I need to change some other setting to make it 1080p instead of 1080i? Thanks.

That's all you need to do. See who needs a PS3 when we got laptops that do 1080p for games already? :)

I got my westy last night loving it so far...

ordered it from sams on friday was shipped tues night came in same day since it shipped a hour north of my town.

well i have a 1080p compatible card

ATI 512 mb x1800xl flashed to x1800xt

the thing is when i go into ATI catalyst CC

i go to HDTV support and add 1080p to the list

i turned off the computer the other day and rebooted in the morning and i had to uninstall/reinstall the drivers to the video card to get the westy to work again.

today i had to do the same yet again.........

anyone else have this problem?

Man I wish they shipped mine so quickly. I ordered mine on Friday too and I won't receive it until next week :p

I wanted to know what you were using before the 37" and are you experiencing any eye strain or discomfort? have you had to adjust your viewing habits? gaming habits? computing habits?

Basically, did you have to do much changing up once you installed the 37"?

What resolution were you running prior to the 37" on what size/kind of display/monitor? :)

Thanks in advance.

Very true. I don't want to deal with online stuff especially since I'm paying over a grand for it. Best Buy has the best warranty that I've seen and I could score a 37" or 42", depending on how much $$$ I have around Christmas time. I hope the prices go way down too . . . that would be nice!

I would jump all over this too if it went down to 1k. Im trying to get the most out of the 1300.00 i have put aside for a LCD display+extras

right now its the Benq FP241w (800) + 80gb ipod/accessories (400) + part for my desk (100ish)

or

1 westinghouse 37" for around that price. WOuld be nice to get it lower. as it seems to be the best deal going. This whole lack of 1:1 scaling on the benq is making me keep looking back to the Westy!

Does anybody know of any brick and morter store that carries this thing? The only thing holding me back is that I can't see it in person and that theres no refunds at any of the online stores I've seen.

Do those of you who have this monitor mind posting a pic of the screen displaying a non-HD or SD channel(s)? I've been reading that this monitor tends to stretch the image a bit. Since I can't check out the monitor in person, I wanted to see how much of an issue this would be (since most of the shows I currently watch are SD.).

where's the absolute cheapest place to buy one of these?
well I found one on ebay for 1178 shipped, and while i'm not ready to buy (won't be ready until another month and a half). but hopefully I can get it for under $1200 by then.

Sam's Club has it where you can go into the store and order it.. (pretty much online only) I think its $1082. Some Best Buy's have it in store for around $1300 and they'll price match Sam's Club. (I already consulted them) I looked at a bunch of other stores, but its impossible to find. I'm going to be ordering this from either one of those stores. My paycheck next week should cover it with an extended warranty. Then, its huge-o-37'' 1080p 3 feet from my face. I have a feeling this thing is going to own me. :D

Monitor is awesome first few hours my eyes were bleeding from the brightness. Coming from a Dell 2005fpw to this i would have paid 2k for this monitor.

The next day i turned the brightness down to 2 from 5 and its perfect now everything is so crisp including the text. Went back to play old game goodness and love every second of it.

Powering this with 2 x 7900gtx's at 1920x1080 vs my old setup 1 7900gtx and 1680x1050 on the dell. I just crank full AA AF on the westy on most anything no problems.

Distance wise tried about 3 feet at first but was no good so I moved it back to about 4-5 feet and seems about perfect. Main thing i play is WoW and its a complete new game on this.

My monitor shipped outta belton, texas and im down in austin so i recieved it day after it shipped.

Wish I had pics but dont have any camera to do the monitor its justice in person it looks 80x better than any pic of it.

Where'd you order it from?
I'm in dallas, so i "might" be able to swing a few dollars extra for fast shipping like that.

I was at Best Buy and they didn't have one. I didn't ask if they could get one and or price match it to Sams, but if you read their price match policy it specifically says they will not price match if the other store does not have the item in stock. Also Best Buy's online unit says it will not deliver to my area, even if they did have it. I should probably call the local store though as they may have a different position.

How do you guys think this this LCD would fare with a Mac Mini (1.66 Duo), 64mb Intel 950 GMA.

Pretty obvious I'm not looking to game, lol, but think it would work?

I know the mini runs fine at 1920 x 1200 with the 24 inchers out there, so any reason it wouldnt work on this one?

You would have to confirm that the Mac Mini is able to run 1080p, or 1920x1080. The mac forum would be your best bet. I'm unsure about mac video drivers and what they support.

Gaming is complete blisss with this monitor, there is absolutely no ghosting that I could detect and playing games like BF2 on a display this large at 1080p gives it a theatrical feel--especially when the speakers are cranked up!

I just got my 27" LCD today, and my display settings say that I am running at 720p, but my screen is rated up to 1080i. How can I run at that resolution? I am using a dual-link DVI cable to connect to the computer.
