Hi folks,

Finally saved enough to buy a new PC and now shes built Im looking for a good game to try her out with.

I loved Quake and that kinda FPS style but Ive broke now having bought the hardware and wanted to know what I should spend my last cash on - Doom3 or HL2.

What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Eventually, own both.

For the immediate future, I'd give the nod to HL2 because of the multiplayer options (HL2DM and CS:S).

BOTH!!!

And don't forget about Far Cry as well.

HL2 is the most fun though, in my opinion. Doom3 has the best graphics, and Far Cry is a solid shooter (despite a lot of frustration in the last two levels).

Pick up HL2 now, and D3 and Far Cry when they hit $30.

Doom 3 is a horrible, horrible pile of crap.

That being said, if you weren't persuaded by that comment, I'll sell you my copy of Doom 3 for $25 shipped. ;)

well hl2 has better multiplayer, in single player they're both fun. i'd say tho that doom3 has a better single player so far from what i've played, a little repetitive, yes, but i liked what they did w/ the ambience and all that jazz

You might want to head over the FarCry vs HL2 vs Doom3 thread. Pretty good feel to what the forum users feel is better. I don't even think Doom3 is in double digits (percentage wise). D3 has crap for multiplayer (so far). IMO you would probably be happier getting HL2 if you can only get 1.

I just bought Doom 3 new English version (not import) for $19.00 from Ebay last week. I plan on buying Half Life 2 new under the same circumstances. I dont understand why folks like to buy these new games for $50+ from stores and nonbargain internet sites. I have NEVER piad over $35 for a pc game.

Search Ebay for games that wont cost you an arm and a leg. Before this year is over, Ill have both HL2 and Doom 3 for under $50 total.

BTW....Doom 3 is not bad at all. It reminds me of the original in many ways....even that garbage ass pistol that you start off with. For X-mas Im going to get a single 1024 RAM stick to improve my performance.

Well it depends. What's an Oak 256k video card? 256k of video memory isn't gonna get you very far with those games. :D

hehe, thats just a reference to the first PC I had. Now got an Athlon 64 3500+ and a Radeon 9800Pro (arrived a few ago).

comparing hl2 to d3 is a bit hard considering that the only thing they have in common is the fact that theyre both shooters. the design teams went about telling their stories in very different ways. d3 can get repetative, but it still manages to scare the crap out of you, and it looks great. hl2 has a very engaging story and also looks great, and has lots of different environments to play in.

theyre both reall great games, but theyre both kind of limited on multiplayer. d3 only allows 4 people to play, so thats kind of a bummer. hl2 has CSS [ ] which is all right, but its just a pretty looking CS, which i was never really impressed with in the first place, plus hl2dm, which only has 2 official maps atm.

Here's the thing. You should own and play both games. Whichever one you think you'll like the best you should play first, because the graphical glory of the game will somewhat diminish how blown away you are by the next one.

For example, I played D3 first and was blown away by it for the 1st half, and then the Hell level. I also was blown away by HL2, but not as much as I could have been, because I saw how good D3 looked first. I still very much liked HL2 though.

Perhaps since you have the ATI 9800, play HL2 first. :D

I really like HL2, but here is my take on it:

Get Doom 3 first. HL2 is VERY buggy right now. By the time you are done with Doom 3, HL2 will be all patched up nice and you can just play it and enjoy it in all its goodness... and it is a very very good game when it works right.

Doom 3 definitely shows off your hardware, and is stable as a rock.

A swing and a miss.....

SOME people have issues with HL2. MOST don't.

Just like Doom 3.

It had a bug in it where a particular footstep sounded exactly like a CD skip for some people. The only workaround is to remove the offending file and replace it with a different footstep sound file. The game was unplayable without that fix, and broke multiplayer. I had that problem and it sucked.

Doom 3 had just as many issues as HL2. Plus it sucks as a game anyway.

what kind of games do you like?
do you like old school games or fast and wild?

its really up to you what you get I already have doom3 cause I like old school games... when the price is right Ill get HL-2 Im in no hurry.
About to start Far Cry for the 3d time too. Another good choice.
Dont forget PainKiller and its expansion pack ..

lots and lots of choices..
dont forget the WW2 games either.

You are in luck my friend. Buy HL2 first. It's a sweet game.

Here's where the "in luck" part comes in: the HL2 retail version has a mail-in-rebate in the HL2 box for $20 with proof of purchase of an ATI video card. Best Buy has HL2 on sale for $40 starting Sunday. Basically you can buy HL2 for only $20 after the rebate.

Hell you might as well get both if you can find Doom 3 for $20.

HL2 and D3 for $40-50 ain't bad at all.

Edit: You do need a copy of the 9800 Pro reciept and the box UPC though.

You wouldn't buy a car without testdriving first would you? Same with games, don't buy unitl you try it first, then you'll know if you like it or not.

I really loved Doom I & II and I like all the Quakes pretty well, so I bought Doom 3, sure am glad I paid less than $50 for it though, 'cause it's worth about $10 or $15 tops. Now if some awesome mods come out for it then that'll be great and would make it worth buying.

HL2 looks neat, and is fun sometimes, but almost not worth the annoyance of putting up with Steam, long load times, etc. But like most people, you might not be bothered at all by those things and you might love the game, so try it. I bought it for $39 and feel like I paid about $10 too much, I am slowly playing through the single player mode about 15 minutes a time a few times a week so diggiing up the CD for the lame CD check gets old real fast.

If those are the only two choices, then I'd say go with HL2. Much more fun.
However, if you are willing to expand your options, then I'd say get Farcry. It is at least as fun as HL2, with shorter load times and no Steam. DAMNIT I HATE STEAM!!!

Hi folks,.

Many thanks for the replies. I am a Wolf3d/Doom/Quake player of old so decided to download the Doom3 demo from the site to see what it was like before spending money on either it or HL2.

The first thing I found was that I needed to update my Catalyst drivers to make it work and now it does work, it runs like a bag of crap. Even at 640x480 when moving its very jerky and when watching people talking and they move their head you get what looks like interlacing artifacts. This is on my new rig that I built yesterday so I may have missed something when setting it all up, any ideas? Here's the spec:

AMD Athlon 64 3500 Newcastle 130nm (Socket 939) Retail Inc Fan
Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939 nForce3 Ultra Mobo
GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 DDR CAS2.5 Memory
LiteOn 16x DVDROM
Pioneer DVR-108 DVD-R
CoolerMaster Centurion 2 Case (No PSU)
Sony Floppy Drive
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
PS2 Keyb
PS2 Mouse
Tagan TG480-U01 480W Silent PSU
Seagate 160GB ATA-100 HDD
Win XP SP1 with Hotfixes
Latest Catalyst drivers from ATI.COM today

I thought that the 9800Pro and the Athlon 64 3500+ would pretty much rock, so was a bit disappointed to find Doom3 at 640x480 didnt even run out of the box.

I'm going to try and find an HL2 demo to try out too, just so I know whats the better option but any advice on getting my system setup to play them would be great.

Thanks,
