Axios is asking questions about Google's recent telephone conversation AI that is showed off on stage at its recent event, and they are not convinced that it was legit. Is it FAKE NEWS!

Bottom line: Google may well have created a lifelike voice assistant that we'll all eventually use to complete mundane tasks like appointment scheduling. It also might be close to creating such a thing, but not quite there yet. Or it was partially staged. Or something else entirely. We just don't know, because Google won't answer the questions.

sadly enough people won't push to get real answers and they will be forgiven for giving a completely misleading presentation. Nevermind the fact that they are lying to get more investors, people will let them get away with whatever they want.

I knew this was coming. Just how the hell do you verify that demo was legit? I tend to think that Google understood that as well and wouldn't take the risk.

.... come on people. Just ask any software engineer and you'll know it's very common to 'wizard of oz' demos as there are too many variables to make sure the presentation goes smoothly. This is not news.

There are a few issues with your statement. First off these are not live demos, but were ones they recorded in advance so they could have ran a few and picked the good ones. That aside they stated these were real calls. if they couldn't get a real call then simply say this is a simulation of a real call. Otherwise that is false advertisement.

people get pissed when they see what is supposed to be game play demos and instead are shown what is later found to be computer generated gameplay and the graphics are way worse than what was shown. This is no different. Google stated one thing and might have been showing off something else. now different than anyone lying to get investors.

I remember watching it and thinking this is waaaay too good to be true. No way in hell was that a real scenario that they showed.

People really need to take a chill pill if they're getting worked up over this. Same with game preview videos. Is it a 'trailer' for a game? Then know it's not the actual game and wait for actual reviews with actual gameplay. People need to learn how to wait and not jump to conclusions

If the call was more a set of pre-recorded things the computer could say over the phone so be it. AI is exponential and even if it's not ready today, that is a very simple step from where we are now. It's not going to take a year to get there.

So instead of calling them yourself, have Google profile also that action of you? Genius.

The problem is that you are excusing everything they are doing just as I said above people would do since it is google. It isn't getting worked up over anything or even jumping to conclusions. The SEC believe it or not actually has rules against misleading investors. There is a difference between saying this is a real call, to a real location to somebody that doesn't know they are being called by google assistant to show this working for real. And this is a real call in a staged setup to show how a call would go. One is false advertisement and misleading investors, which are illegal things, and one is showing off how things could be with the technology once it matures.

Who are these people that thought it was a real call? That's the real question.
