The headline of this article shouldn't say "as scrutiny rises" because there has always been an abundance of scrutiny on self-driving car programs since the beginning. What it should say is "as media attention rises, we decided now was a good time to get an in-house lawyer." ;)

Google self-driving car project said on Monday it appointed its first general counsel, as U.S. regulators increase their scrutiny of autonomous vehicles. Google has logged more than 1.7 million miles (2.7 million km) of autonomous driving in testing in Texas, California, Arizona and Washington state. It has said it has no timetable for making self-driving vehicles available to the public.

LIke Google Glasses, self-driving cars may be fascinating from a technical perspective, however I suspect they will be totally rejected by the buying public.
