The Google versus Oracle retrial has ended with a decisive victory for Google. Next stop, the appeals court on the way to an eventual Supreme Court showdown. You have to wonder how long this thing is going to drag out, another four years maybe?

In a high-profile retrial of a patent fight between Oracle and Google, a 10-person jury has found in favor of Google. The jury was asked to answer one question: Has Google shown that its implementation of Java within its mobile operating system, Android, constitutes fair use under the Copyright Act? After deliberating for roughly three days, the jury responded unanimously that Google had adhered to the law.

Damn. Google remains free to steal from anyone (data, work, code) and make their billions while screwing over everyone else.
It's a great business model if you can get away with it, and apparently Google can.

That's Google right there..

They have been trying to pretend acquiring the startups, then interview them to understand how they did it. Rejected them afterward and clone their shit into their own product without paying a penny.... sniff*... G...Photo.....

Not going into detail, but apparently they have been doing stealing for the longest time. Fuck them.....

Umm, Oracle was trying to say that Google stole the API when they implemented their own version of Java.. The API. If you understand programming, you should realize how bad it would have been if Oracle had won this. All the programmers I know, even those who hate Google cheered this decision. (in fact the judge originally said API's can't be copyrighted, but the appeals court sent it back down, the appeals court got that TOTALLY wrong)

Had Oracle won, they could claim anyone who used Java ever stole from them.. It would mean that to program in Java, you would need a license from Oracle, even if you used notepad to write your program.

And Java is EVERYWHERE as it was written to be an OPEN standard, but after Oracle purchased SUN they decided retroactively that they can go after people who use the Java API..

Even if you hate Google, you should be glad this went they way it did.

You have absolutely no idea what this case was about, do you?

Facepalm. Brain surgery on-parade, ladies and gentlemen.

Only Google, Sports Teams, and Politicians enjoy such a degree of irrational loyalty paired with a complete lack of critical thinking.

I'm half tempted to subscribe to this impending trainwreck of a thread but I'm all out of popcorn.

anyone got any to spare? Salt and butter only. Anything else is heretical.

The Android model is just an exploitation of the labor of OSS programmers, using their goodwill and voluntary labor to make billions without reciprocation. Google is a manipulator and exploiter, not a partner.

Google’s iron grip on Android: Controlling open source by any means necessary
I think you're completely unaware of Google's contributions to all sorts of OSS, including the Linux kernel.

It's not even news at this point: Google and Samsung soar into list of top 10 Linux contributors and Open Source Projects Released By Google

That Ars article you linked is being nit-picky. Google releases source code for many apps with base functionality, but has its own set of Google-branded apps with improvements. Out of the dozens of parts of Android that are OSS, including the damn OS, some improvements in a handful of apps are not. lol

the exact same can be said for the other end of the spectrum; the haters, the flamers, the people who couldnt be bothered to actually know what they are talking about.

If you think this thread is bad, check out the actual proceedings in court. At least one report by Sarah Jeong indicated it didn't go so well.
The problem with Oracle v. Google is that everyone actually affected by the case knows what an API is, but the whole affair is being decided by people who don't, from the normals in the jury box to the normals at the Supreme Court -- which declined to hear the case in 2015, on the advice of the normals at the Solicitor General's office, who perhaps did not grasp exactly how software works.
